Dormant for nearly two thousand years, Greek music underwent a musical rebirth in the 19th cent. with the works of the opera composers Nikolaos Mantzaros (1795-1872), Spyridion Xyndas (1812-96), and Spyros Samaras (1861-1917). Elements of nationalism are prevalent in the folklike songs of George Lembalet (1875-1945) and Manos Hadjidakis (1925-94). Introduced in Greece by Nikos Skalkottas (1904-49), serial music has been composed by Yorgos Sicilianos and by Iannis Xenakis , who also writes electronic music . During the late 20th cent. Greece's most popular composer was probably Mikis Theodorakis (1925-), whose opposition to military rule during the 1960s and 70s cost him several years of imprisonment and precipitated the banning of his operas, symphonic works, film scores (most notably for Zorba the Greek ), and hundreds of songs. Greek, you say? Well, most of the time. Breakfast, however, is all Bahamian. At 7am each morning you ll see the locals standing in line for chicken souse, corned beef and grits and, yes, eggs too. If you re an adventurer, you ll find the best of Port Lucaya s Bahamian eye-openers are on the menu. For lunch the menu is definitely Greek: large gyros and souvlakia kabobs are just a couple of Zorba s lunchtime signatures. For dinner you can begin with a Greek salad, then continue with moussaka, and finally end the meal in sweet style with baklava and a cup of coffee. Biography: One of the most important British actors to emerge during the 1960s, "Alan Bates " made his reputation early in his career as one of the original "angry young men" of the post-war English theatre. His rumpled, malleable features lending themselves to his explosive versatility, Bates became a stage star through his portrayals of various disenfranchised working-class young men in such productions as "John Osborne"'s Look Back in Anger, directed in 1956 by "Tony Richardson ", and "Harold Pinter"'s The Caretaker, staged in 1964. Bates went on to establish himself as a noted screen actor in over 50 films, with particularly memorable turns in "Zorba the Greek " (1964), "Georgy Girl" (1966), and "The Fixer" (1968), for which he received a Best Actor Oscar nominatio (movies.msn.com....x?c=203485)
I was born in California . My father was Mexican. His parents came across the border in Texas and had him here. So he was by birth a citizen as the rules were then. My mom was from Irish stock her family had come here as a result of British policies. That they paired up after meeting in the Navy (both served) how a woman from the deep south at the height of segregation ended up with a Mexican baffles me. And they got away with it. It was against the law for other races to marry in those days, but I LOVE LUCY was huge so maybe that explains it. The only celebrity I know of that was an Irish Mexican was Anthony Quinn . Famous for playing ZORBA THE GREEK . I bet there aren't many Irish Mexicans in Ireland (lincolntruth.blogdrive.com....8_o-0.html)

Quinn, Anthony (Anthony Rudolph Oaxaca Quinn), 1915 51; 2001 , American actor, b. Chihuahua, Mex. His family moved to Los Angeles when he was four years old. Quinn had a number of jobs before turning to acting in the 1930s; his first movie role was in 1936. Thereafter, he was cast as a rugged ethnic or exotic of varying backgrounds. An actor who seemed to personify the life force, he played a dissolute Mexican in Kazan 's Viva Zapata ! On the surface, the film plods along as an offbeat, tongue-in-cheek spythriller. Ian Carmichael's stuffy and uncomfortable-looking astrophysicistis drawn out of his boring existence and into a web of internationalintrigue, after an encounter with an old friend from the other side of theIron Curtain leads him into the clutches of an alluring but devious female(played by Janet Munro ). A series of increasingly improbable adventuresensues, from which he emerges, at the end, somewhat less stuffy anduncomfortable-looking. (And this was surely the point of it all, to wind upsomewhat less stuffy and uncomfortable-looking, as surely as Alan Bates wasmeant to wind up dancing on the beach with Anthony Quinn at the end of Zorba the Greek . Nikos Kazantzakis , 1883?-1957, Greek writer, b. Crete. After obtaining a law degree he studied philosophy under Henri Bergson in Paris and traveled widely in Europe and Asia. Attracted to Communism early in life, he grew disillusioned with revolutionary materialism and rationalism. As the Greek minister of public welfare (1919-27) and minister of state (1945-46) he vainly tried to reconcile the factions of left and right. Intensely poetic and religious, Kazantzakis wrote interpretative works on Bergson and Nietzsche. His most ambitious work, The Odyssey , a Modern Sequel (1938, tr. 1958), a verse tale, begins where Homer's Odyssey ends; the new adventures of Odysseus explore the worldviews of Jesus, Buddha, Lenin, Nietzsche, and others. Zorba the Greek (1946, tr. 1952) reflects enormous exuberance for life, and Christ Recrucified (1938, tr. The Greek Passion, 1953) is a darker tale of good and evil in which a modern man reenacts a Christlike destiny. Other works include The Last Temptation of Christ (1951, t (www.encyclopedia.com....antza.html)
It is quiet and we felt safe any time we were out and about. The desk would not call for a metered cab for us when we were checking out. We had them call a cab for us to go to a theatre in covent gardens. We failed to ask what the fare would be before we left. We ended up paying 18 BPS for the trip . An expensive lesson learned. On December 2nd, 1885, Greek writer Nikos Kazantzakis was born in Heraklion, Crete. Some sources give February 18th as his birthdate, and still others suggest he was born in 1883 instead. For the writer of "Zorba the Greek " and "The Last Temptation of Christ", who constantly courted controversy, these disagreements over even fundamental facts must make him smile (gogreece.about.com....er-2nd.htm)
But let's move onto the important stuff - the food. First, a flavorful Italian flatbread was brought to the table and was served with fresh ground pepper and olive oil. It was delicious. For my entree, I chose a dish called Zorba the Greek . It consisted of penne pasta topped with grilled chicken, kalamata olives, Roma tomatoes, spinach, and feta cheese - all in a tasty cream sauce. I shudder to think how many calories might have been in this dish, but I'll tell you this - it was worth every one. It was incredible. My husband ordered a calzone with creamed spinach on the side. He said that both were quite good and his empty plate confirmed it. At the end of the meal we were far too full for dessert but have vowed to save room next time for the tiramisu (memphis.about.com....venice.htm)
I would say that one experiences the culture as soon as one arrives as one is surounded by friendly, Slavic people, who speak an odd language and use the cyrillic alphabet. There is a very strong nationalistic spirit in Bulgaria , despite the fact that it is a very small country with a very poor economy. Each town and area delights in it's special heritage and local costumes, music and dance. This was brought home to me several years ago while attending one of the many Folk Festivals. I asked my Guide where different groups came from, and he would tell me the town or area, as the various costumes are well known. One group of men and boys were dressed in the manner of Greek soldiers, with short white skirts and large white blouses. They danced in a line in the Zorba the Greek fashion. I asked where they were from and was told "the south". OH, I said, that is the Greek influence. Not Greek, said my guide very forcefully, BULGARIAN. Anthony Quinn 's heyday was the 1950s, when he won two Oscars as a supporting actor: one as the brother of Emiliano Zapata in Viva Zapata ! (1952), and another as the painter Gauguin, the friend of Vincent Van Gogh in Lust for Life (1956, with Kirk Douglas as Van Gogh). In the 1960s Quinn became permanently associated with the title role of the earthy, life-embracing peasant in Zorba the Greek . In later years Quinn became notorious for his marital peccadilloes; in all he had five wives and fathered 13 children. Montauk.but.that's.hot. I take your point in so much as it isn't just white busty women who are hot, but I think the real problem here is that in media, as in the mind, the erotic is pushed aside as incidental, peripheral, and yet, for some reason, ever present. I mean what is the 'subject' of this painting? Well, that point could be argued any which way you like, but it would be difficult to argue that the subject is erotic. So I think there's a real question as to why something that's always there is likewise always pushed to the side. Likewise, rightly or wrongly, in society, media depicting the 'erotic for erotic's sake' is pushed to late night on tv, dodgy internet sites, and plastic wrapped magazines. So I'm not saying 'porn in every classroom' or anything like that. I don't really have an opinion at all. Like that guy from Zorba the greek , if given the choice between a night with a woman and a night with a book, I would probably choose the book; I've got to finish my degree, after a (www.boingboing.net....s-new.html)
