As some of you may know I work a day / night job as a dispatcher for the Toronto Fire Department and all the news in the city today revolves around a massive, six alarm blaze in the Queen and Bathurst area, the part of Toronto that is ground zero for the best music bars, comic shops and indie video shops. And the king of the indie video stores in Toronto is, without a doubt Suspect Video. I fell in love with the place years ago when I walked in and asked if they had a copy of Lars von Trier57;s Europa , long before it was widely available in any format. At first the clerk said no, but after I wandered away to rummage through the stacks of martial arts flicks and cult titles he walked up to me with a naked VHS tape in his hands. 60;Did that film also go out as Zentropa ?61;, he asked. When told yes, he handed me the plain tape. 60;Thought so. I found this in a bin somewhere a couple years ago and it57;s not on the shelves because it didn57;t have any artwork with it but I figured it57;s kind of rare so I should pick it up for the sho (twitchfilm.net....geek-talk/)
photobucket.com/albums/bb208/EdwardCopeland/thinred/vlcsnap-17619.png //> Malick excels at summoning his drowsy, trance -like Zentropa feel, but he does undermine his own movie with the sequence involving the storming of the beach and the taking of the hill. It doesn't belong and proves to be a true distraction, shocking the viewer out of his easy-listening mode. Even the character played by Elias Koteas seems to admit this in these sequences, stopping to check his watch as an audience surrogate impatient to end the action and get back to the existential. One thing that struck me on my recent viewing is his portrayal of the Japanese soldiers. They seem to be shrieking stereotypes with no humanity. One narrator even goes so far as to ask, "Who is this evil, robbing us of light and life?" At first, I was offended by this portrayal, then I realized that this must be Malick making a statement about the racist South, especially when you see the Japanese soldiers disguised as trees, showing they are much more in tune with nature than their American counterpart (eddieonfilm.blogspot.com....chive.html)
I often find that directors are noncommittal about coming into a transfer session. When I asked Lars von Trier to come in for Zentropa recently, he said, āThanks, but we trust you to do a good job.ā Thatās while I was in Copenhagen , mind you, just a few miles away! (Luckily I got to screen an original print at the lab while timing, therefore keeping the original ideas intact.) Then there is Jim Jarmusch , the complete opposite. Jim not only wants to watch the color correction, but he wants to review any fixes, check the compression on the DVD, and talk through the entire process. There were a few issues with Down by Law that had to be corrected in the transfer room, and Jim spent hours on one scene, making sure the black and white levels in the swamp were just right. . well, just stuff really. I was also rather insulting to Jacob Bųtter , but apparently I was very English about it, so that's OK. Drinking and frivolity ensued, including the rather surprising spectacle of mixed body parts (many of them apparently belonging to Daniel being signed with a purple Letraset marker . I talked with him a bit and it turns out that he also works in the film industry, for Zentropa , I believe . (www.daen.dk....gd_20.html)
