Allow me to clarify something at this point: When you save an image to a file in whichever image editor that you're using, it (the editor) may take steps to prepare the image for saving to the file. These steps may involve changing the values of colors around the bitmap to serve a certain purpose (reduce the amount of colors used in the image, for example, in order to reduce the image file size). The change in color values in this case would be the result of these steps, not any particular restriction on the part of the image formats (I'll get into the GIF color-count limit in a moment). This means that you should be able to be more specific when you're saving the image, telling your image editor exactly what steps to take so that you get what you want , and not the default behaviour.
