Wattstax

Wattstax was hoped to be the first step in a series of urban festivals and movies to be produced by Stax, but sequels were never to materialize. The festival hit the zeitgeist of black America at that point in time. And 35 hot summers after the festival, the music sounds as fresh as ever (www.reporter7.com....dtrack.htm)

LOS ANGELES, Calif. In the summer of 1972, Stax Records had an idea that was larger than life . Stax's co-owner, Al Bell, had wanted to expand the soul label's West Coast presence and develop its Stax Films arm. The ideal way to do both was to stage the biggest soul concert in history termed by one former staff member 'the black Woodstock- right in the center of South Central Los Angeles, a vast portion of which had been destroyed by fire in the Watts Riots. The concert, called Wattstax , proved a crowning moment for Stax as 112,000 people united at the Los Angeles Coliseum in a spirit of joy, pride and celebration. The resultant movie was a blockbuster and plays to this date in many music film festivals. And now the original two-LP soundtrack has been expanded to three CDs, including material from the original Wattstax album (which sold seven million copies in the SoundScan era alone) as well as from its sequel, Wattstax : The Living Word, along with samplings from Wattstax -related individual artist albums released in 1972-7 (www.reporter7.com....dtrack.htm)

In addition to music from the concert, Stax filmed and recorded its artists all around town in clubs, churches and even in the studio. The expanded Wattstax anthology includes the best of the live festival from Wattstax and Wattstax : The Living Word plus a slew of previously unreleased festival performances, selected tracks from the club and church recordings staged during the week of the festival, and selected bits by comedian Richard Pryor that were recorded at the Summit Club in Los Angeles. Pryor's contributions were originally used in the Wattstax film to connect the music performances with man-on-the-street commentary on issues that were then pertinent to black America. Included also is an introduction by the Rev. Jesse Jackson himself a Stax spoken-word recording artist at the time (www.reporter7.com....dtrack.htm)

His book, The Notorious Phd's Guide to the Super Fly '70s , is a great introduction for anyone who's interested in the decade that brought us terrific groundbreaking films like Shaft (1971), Coffy (1973) and Wattstax (1973), as well as talented musical artists such as George Clinton and cutting edge performers like Richard Pryor (www.cinedelica.com/2007/06/)

I don't know much about Luther Ingram except that his greatest hit was '(If Loving You Is Wrong) I Don't Want to Be Right' and he appeared at Wattstax , but I do know that 'If It's All The Same To You' and 'Exus Trek' are the distilled essence of Northern Soul and I hope you enjoy them as much as I do. Today in the Student Union Great Hall, DJ Spooky will present a mixture of performance and lecture as he discusses and demonstrates his work. The event is a prelude to his world premiere performance of "Video Soul: Wattstax to the Avant Garde," on Saturday at Duke University's Reynolds Industries Theate (media.www.dailytarheel.com....7000.shtml)

My review The 1972 Wattstax concert and film - sort of a black-power version of Woodstock or Monterey - has only recently come to garner the same kind of attention of the Nixon Era's other happenings, despite the appearance of a young Richard Pryor and the full roster of soul's greatest label. Such an embarrassment of riches it was, in fact, that some of the sets filmed for the movie never even made it in. Concord, having recently bought the back catalog of Stax from its previous owner, Fantasy, has begun rectifying that situation by issuing this previously-unreleased live recording of Johnnie Taylor at Los Angeles' now-defunct Summit Club. (Portions of this performance can be seen in Wattstax 2 , but this marks the first time the whole set is available on CD (oldies.about.com....summit.htm)

Held in the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, Wattstax was an event of soul music and soul solidarity. Known as the Black Woodstock, it was a peaceful, astounding and vivid celebration of self-expression and self-respect with a positive and empowering message. This rare collection of sixty images and memorabilia captures the energy and history of this landmark event, as well as performances by musical icons including the Staple Singers, The Bar-Kays, Albert King, and Isaac Hayes among others. Most of these images were lost for nearly 30 years in Hollywood warehouses, with the first public display at the Stax Museum of American Soul Music in 2004. But now, Wattstax is home, celebrating its 35th anniversary at CAAM (www.caamuseum.org/past20.htm)

Instead, I would like to take Bob Johnson at his word, and let this thing rest. To be fair, Hillary displayed admirable loyalty to Bob Johnson by not hanging him out to dry. Whatever the merits of these 2 people, it seems fair to assume their hearts are in the right place. In the spirit of moving past this, and put in mind by the name of Johnson's network , I'd like to share with you one of the great moments in Black Entertainment History. Wattstax was an all-day concert put together in 1972 by the Stax record label. It was held at the Los Angeles Coliseum to commemorate the seventh anniversary of the Watts riots and hosted by Reverend Jesse Jackson. Over 100,000 people attended what would later be known as the "Black Woodstock," and they got to enjoy some amazing live performances by artists like The Staple Singers, Isaac Hayes and Rufus Thomas. July 21 and 22 will feature a six film tribute to Stax, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. Included will be a 1967 Norwegian TV special dedicated to the Stax Revue and the 1972 concert film Wattstax , which includes a cameo from then-unknown actor Ted Lange (Isaac on Love Boat riffing on life in the ghetto. This was the Woodstockfor soulbrothers and soulsisters held in 1972 at the L.A. Coliseum. This wasthe kind of show that made you wnat to jump out your skin and dance up astorm. Rance Allen's Lying on the Truth makes a man wanna go to church.Unfortunatly this movie hasn't made its way out on DVD or even VHS as ofyet. The only way we can hear the legendary performances is to get theWattstax soundtrack on cd.There is actually more than one soundtrack out,Wattstax and Wattstax 2. I can say I have Wattstax 2 and itmakes me thank Gd for a turntable.soulfully decadent (us.imdb.com/title/tt0070902/)

Director Mel Stuart 's film of the event has an unusual touch, a then-unknown Richard Pryor doing comic routines illuminating the black experience in America for a Greek-chorus effect. "Wattstax " disappeared soon after its 1973 release and was out of circulation for 30 years until it was finally reissued on DVD in 200 (www.newsobserver.com....31669.html)

I frequented the Majestic /Mayfair Theatre from the mid-60's to early 70's, the theatre would show a lot of the standard Hollywood fare when it hit neighborhood theatres after it's initial first run engagement in Hollywood or Beverly Hills. I recall seeing a variety of films there, from the mainstream such as BUTCH CASSIDY AND THE SUNDANCE KID and THE LOVE BUG to more exploitation type films like NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD and THE CORPSE GRINDERS. Don Knotts comedies always seemed to open here for some reason or other. There did tend to be a seedier/rowdy crowd attending the Mayfair than the more upmarket crowd at the Criterion and El Miro. Occasionally the theatre would put on a special all night show that began at midnight and I remember going to see an all-nighter of 200 MOTELS, WATTSTAX , GIMME SHELTER and one other rock type of film of which title I can't recall in 1972. The theatre was absolutely packed and they served some kind of breakfast at the end of the marathon. I guess I was too tired to recall what was on the menu but it must have been something quite minima (www.santamonica....dmk29.html)

3. Dave Chappelle 's Block Party OK, I'm lying. I actually like this movie more than Children of Men . First of all, just the concert alone, what is very probably the greatest hip hop concert ever performed, made up of the cream of the second-generation Native Tongues posse, is enough to land this on my top 10, and I hope that it won't be long before a deluxe edition DVD comes out with the entire concert included. But the bits with Chappelle himself send it over the top . This whole movie is the embodiment of Chappelle's personality, a grinning, lazy, stoner of a movie, from the music on down. This is neck-in-neck with Wattstax for my favorite concert film of all time at this point (psychedelicatessen.blogspot.com....chive.html)

Here57;s a clip of one of our all-time favorite bands. The Bar-Kays put down funky album after funky album starting in the mid-6057;s. This coming Tuesday, August 28th Stax Records will reissue 47 of its best funk and soul tracks on a 3-CD compilation, titled Wattstax after the 1972 Stax artist concert in LA known as "the black Woodstock." All of your favorites from Isaac Hayes to The Bar-Kays, Carla Thomas, Rufus Thomas , and The Rance Allen Group will be present along with excerpts from comedian Richard Pryor and Reverend Jesse Jackson speeches. "Video Soul" re-creates Mel Stuart 's acclaimed documentary "Wattstax ," about the 1970s concert featuring Isaac Hayes and Richard Pryor that was performed right after the Watts Riots. Miller will combine remixed music from that era, with sounds and music from the present exploring the concepts of "then" and "now. (media.www.dailytarheel.com....7000.shtml)

It's been called one of the most important events of the Civil Rights Movement. Wattstax was a day-long concert held at the Los Angeles Coliseum in the early '70s. The concert was a mix of soul music, politics and empowerment for a community still recovering from the Watts Riots. Vicki Curry talks with Charmaine Jefferson, executive director of California African-American Museum about the 35th anniversary of Wattstax . You know him mainly for his Sixties hit Who's Making Love, but R B and soul fiends recognize the true genius of Johnnie Taylor's gutbucket soul career, which unfortunately peaked in the Seventies with Disco Lady. This previously unreleased performance, however, finds Taylor at his peak: a rough-but-right live gig filmed for the 1972 Wattstax documentary (oldies.about.com....summit.htm)

Wattstax centers around concert that marked the anniversary of the Watts riots. Although the film includes many ideas and opinions of ordinary people, Jesse Jackson, Richard Pryor , Isaac Hayes , Rufus Thomas, Mavis Staples, and obviously several bands appear as well. This film does a superb job of capturing black culture in Los Angeles as the civil rights movement was gaining traction, and the excellent grooves and period threads are not to be missed (perimetric.blogspot.com/)
