4. Waking Ned Devive Ned Devine plays the lotto, wins the main prize and in a rather untimely manner dies before cashing his new riches in. His village neighbors decide to commit a little sin of omission, not telling the lotto bosses that Ned is now the late Mr Devine. Because, after all, why should not the village get the money? Pity that this hilarious Irish comedy was actually filmed on the Isle of Man (goireland.about.com....hfilms.htm)
Mystery buffs should put away their forensics kits: Caldwell is far more interested in detailing every shot in a game of darts at a pub than examining motive or evidence. In that regard, "The Pig Did It" sometimes veers into "Waking Ned Devine " territory, where the colorful characters are so darned busy being wacky and Irish that you just want to drape a tea cozy on them (www.csmonitor.com....-bogn.html)

If you thought the Irish held the patent on cutesy small-town romantic comedies, you'll be surprised to find one set in, of all places, Montana. Big Eden finds itself in the same genre as the likes of Waking Ned Devine and Saving Grace . You know the type. Precious scenes that do nothing to advance the plot, a full cast of quirky supporting characters and enough tugs on your heart strings to qualify as bypass surgery (worldfilm.about.com....102101.htm)
After an early career with the Royal Shakespeare Company (195151;54) and several critically acclaimed appearances in plays by Eugene O'Neill , Bannen turned his focus toward film roles. Since the mid-1950s, he has appeared in numerous British and American films, most notably, The Flight of the Phoenix (1965) for which he received an Oscar nomination, Gandhi (1981), Damage (1992), Braveheart (1995), Waking Ned Devine (1998) and To Walk with Lions (1999). He was killed in a car crash near Loch Ness, Scotlan (www.infoplease.com....63045.html)
Though no one's at fault, I still feel sorry for those whose 'Americanear' causes them to miss so much of these Irish/Scottish/Englishmovies. This movie's on a par with or better than Dirty RottenScoundrels and other comedies with English/Irish (or Cockney) accents.Waking Ned Devine is just priceless: hardly what our Oklahoma friendthought. The cast is perfect ; the plot superb. And yes, it is Ned'sbaby: if you tune your ear to the dialect you'll hear Annie say healways treated her gently and with love. So, those who didn't get itthe first time, watch it again. I know you'll THEN watch it again. Andagain. It's that good! Thanks. (www.imdb.com/title/tt0166396/)
Director Kirk Jones Explains the Wait Between Waking Ned Devine and Nanny McPhee: Jones said he was keeping busy during his absence from feature films. I wasn t not doing anything. I had written and directed 'Waking Ned Devine ' and I really felt strongly that I should write and direct my next film. I didn t read anyone else s scripts and I was very focused on my own work. I then realized it was going to take me four or five years to get my own project together and I was desperate to back into making films again. I still made commercials in the meantime. But after about two years of saying, 'No, I don t want to read any scripts,' I then said actually, 'This is crazy. I really should be reading other people s work. (movies.about.com....011806.htm)
"When I was a kid, Christopher Walken was one of America's leading classically trained actors," says Mosher, who was very impressed by Walken's vocal performance in the 1981 musical film, "Pennies From Heaven ," starring Steve Martin and Bernadette Peters . According to Mosher, Walken didn't audition for the part of Conroy. After reading the Richard Nelson book that Mosher had sent to him, an excited Walken offered his services and performed a few songs, written by "Waking Ned Devine " composer Shaun Davey, from the score . Before accepting the role, Walken reportedly had some minor second thoughts: "Sure you don't want an Irish guy?" he asked (www.salon.com....8/27/dead/)
Poor Daniel (Matthew Macfadyen). All he wants to do is give his father a decent, dignified funeral ceremony, but instead things keep going wrong. Bodies are switched, hallucinogenic drugs are taken, and unexpected guests turn up with secrets they want to tell and demands to make. Veteran American director Frank Oz does a good job of creating a British comedy in the same vein as Four Weddings and a Funeral and Waking Ned Devine . If you liked those two films, you57;ll love this. British comedies are not my cup of tea; I find the humor too slow and telegraphed, and the jokes (about old age, wheelchairs, gay lovers, and drugs) too easy. Nonetheless, there are a couple of laugh out loud moments, most of them involving Andy Nyman and American actor Alan Tudyk. The cast is more than competent and plays it straight, and the dramatic moments toward the end work because of this. Rating: 2.5 of 4 (moviereviewzoo.blogspot.com....-2007.html)
I have a lot of sympathy for the small and smallest movie makers out there, but come on. Why is it that whenever somebody enjoys success, the mob shouts sell-out? I'm a moviegoer, and as a moviegoer, I want to see more smart, creative, exciting, new movies that break the boring old Hollywood mold. If it's Disney's Miramax that brings me such delights as Rushmore or Waking Ned Devine , then I say more power to them. After all, my favorite American movie this year to date, Election is an MTV production. Go figure (worldfilm.about.com....071199.htm)

If you enjoy the sort of gently risqué, mildly droll Ealing comedies of the 1950s â the kind that usually starred Alec Guinness or Alistair Sim â Keeping Mum may provide a warm rush of nostalgia. If this sort of thing isnât to your liking (and I know plenty of people who gagged at the similarly twee charms of modern-day Ealings like Waking Ned Devine and Saving Grace ), youâll probably still get a kick out of Smith. Whether brewing up endless pots of tea, helping the vicar to write his sermons, or cutting the brake lines on the bicycle of an 11-year-old bully, she radiates charm, warmth, and a blissfully happy sense of true-blue lunacy (eddieonfilm.blogspot.com....chive.html)
A larger one is that the director, Kirk Jones , doesn't really have the visual imagination to match Thompson's performance or screenplay. Jones was the writer-director of "Waking Ned Devine ," and he tends to indulge in boisterous set pieces, like the big pie-throwing finale here. It just looks like a lot of actors having a food fight (www.csmonitor.com....-almo.html)
The first was GUEST HOUSE PARADISO ; the second was KING KONG (2005). Ifind it very difficult to watch average British comedy: the humour isoften deeply contrived; the plot is always the same. When the filmincludes an elderly character who is supposed to be funny just becauses/he swears, I suspect I&m in for a rough time! These comedies ofmanners seem to rely behaviour that is out of place in particularsocial situations (such as upper-middle-class parties, or weddings, orfunerals); I suspect it&s the constant regurgitation of those socialsituations I find uninspiring. I was led to believe this was notaverage, and was in the mould of FOUR WEDDINGS or WAKING NED DEVINE ; itis not. It is purely genre-driven , whose writing is sub-par and whoseoriginality is nil. I can understand people appreciating this genre (Ihave my own genres within which I seem to excuse badness), but itcertainly was not for me (www.imdb.com....s?start=20)
"Kinky Boots" is another one of those British comedies, like "Waking Ned Devine ," "The Full Monty ," and "Calendar Girls ," that looks as if it were made with both eyes set squarely on the US market. Nothing terribly wrong in that, but the flat-out commercialism, the pandering for laughs and tears, can get a bit exhausting after a while. Can the Broadway musical be far behind? In the movie "Waking Ned Devine ," there's a scene where one of the main characters talks about how great it would be to attend your own funeral so you could hear all the great things people said about you - things they maybe didn't think to tell you while you were still alive. Jeff, I hope that somehow you know the positive effect you had on those people you knew in your 30-some years on this earth (blog.news-record.com....n_ri.shtml)
