Tornado es can appear as a traditional funnel shape, or in a slender rope-like form. Some have a churning, smoky look to them. Others contain "multiple vortices" - small, individual tornado es rotating around a common center. Even others may be nearly invisible, with only swirling dust or debris at ground level as the only indication of the tornado 's presence (www.weather.com..../form.html)
By default, the Tornado Map shows all tornado es, with the most recent storms first. You can choose to view only historically significant tornado es by clicking on that tab, above the map itself. You can switch between these tabs and the map will keep its location and zoom level. (wiki.wunderground.com....ornado_Map)
Could be a Tornado Vortex Signature (TVS) or Mesocyclone. Since these are current storms, this data will change frequently, and may not always be presen (wiki.wunderground.com....ornado_Map)
This data comes from the NOAA's Storm Prediction Center storm data archive, and goes back to 1950. IMPORTANT this data tends to run about two years behind, and as of this writing, only goes up to December 2005 . Therefore, recent tornado es, although official, will only show up on the map as Tornado Storm Report (wiki.wunderground.com....ornado_Map)
This data comes from the NOAA's Storm Prediction Center, and goes back to June 1999. New storm reports are updated every few minutes. If a particular Tornado Storm Report has an official Tornado record, the entry will be merged and shown together (wiki.wunderground.com....ornado_Map)
The photographers in our WunderPhotos community often take pictures of the tornado es that are on the map. In these cases, their photographs are shown with the relevant Tornado or Tornado Storm Report. See the FAQ below. (wiki.wunderground.com....ornado_Map)
This is issued when a tornado is indicated by the WSR-88D radar or sighted by spotters; therefore, people in the affected area should seek safe shelter immediately. They can be issued without a Tornado Watch being already in effect. They are usually issued for a duration of around 30 minutes. (www.weather.gov....do+Warning)
After it has been issued, the affected NWFO will followed it up periodically with Severe Weather Statements. These statements will contain updated information on the tornado and they will also let the public know when warning is no longer in effect (www.weather.gov....do+Warning)
Because there are few actual measurements of tornado winds, their intensity is estimated through after-the-fact examination of the damage that they produced. Prior to February 2007, that was done using the Fujita Scale (F Scale). Since then, the National Weather Service has adopted an Enhanced Fujita Scale (EF-Scale) to rate tornado es (www.weather.com....scale.html)
Risk of fatality in a mobile home is 15 to 20 times greater than for those in permanent structures. Only seven percent of U.S. residents live in mobile homes, yet this is where around 50 percent of tornado fatalities occur. However, even permanent structures are at risk in tornado es rated EF3 or higher (www.noaanews.noaa.gov....rnado.html)
The reason for this is that low-level heat, moisture, and instability necessary for tornado formation are usually confined to southern regions early in the year, and only reach northern sections with regularity late in the spring (www.weather.com....ecast.html)
Also, the jet stream (associated with the upper-level weather systems that can contribute to thunderstorm and tornado formation) migrates northward from winter to summer (www.weather.com....ecast.html)
Since most tornado es are formed in conjunction with severe thunderstorms, forecasters first must determine where thunderstorms are likely to form and reach the severity necessary for tornado formation. (www.weather.com....ecast.html)
The difference between whether a thunderstorm will be severe with large hail and strong winds but no tornado , or whether it will spawn a potentially deadly tornado is very subtle (www.weather.com....ecast.html)
By displaying swirling cloud-level winds that often precede a tornado , Doppler radar can help forecasters pinpoint areas where tornado formation may be occurring or is imminent. This can give meteorologists valuable lead time for the issuance of watches and warnings. (www.weather.com....ecast.html)
A total of 87 tornado es were reported in the United States from Oct. 17-19 â a new record outbreak for the month, according to NOAAâs Storm Prediction Center in Norman , Okla. The outbreak also contributed to the monthly total of 105 tornado reports â the second highest for October, behind the 117 tornado es in October 2001. Records date back to 1950 (www.noaanews.noaa.gov....rnado.html)
Tornado wind speeds are estimated after the fact based on the damage they produce. Tornado es are categorized on a scale of 0 (weakest) to 5 (strongest) according to the Enhanced Fujita Scale (www.weather.com....y/tornado/)
Tornado es and the threat of tornado es are a key part of the USA's spring weather because spring brings favorable tornado conditions. But tornado es can occur any time of the year, during the day and at night (www.usatoday.com....sics_x.htm)
The strongest tornado es are often near the edge of the updraft, not far from where air is descending in a downdraft caused by the thunderstorms with falling rain or hail. This is why a burst of heavy rain or hail sometimes announces a tornado 's arrival (www.usatoday.com....sics_x.htm)
Tornado es are commonly associated with the nation's heartland 51; in a 10-state area stretching from Texas to Nebraska that also includes Colorado, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Missouri and Arkansas, known as Tornado Alley. (www.usatoday.com....sics_x.htm)
Tornado es that have hit Oklahoma , on the other hand, are some of the most violent on record. A tornado that struck Oklahoma City and its southern suburbs in 1999 had winds of nearly 320 just above the groun (www.usatoday.com....sics_x.htm)
"Everything was gone. I could see debris from the trailers and garage everywhere," Suter said. "It finally hit me that it must have been a tornado . I figured they were dead or hurt really bad, so I took off running for my best friend 's house. (www.usatoday.com....ivor_x.htm)
The longest previously documented incident, he said, happened in Bowdle, S.D., on July 1, 1955, when a tornado carried a 9-year-old girl and her pony 1,000 feet before setting them down virtually unhurt (www.usatoday.com....ivor_x.htm)
TOKYO (AP) Japan's deadliest tornado on record tore through a remote northern town on Tuesday, killing nine and leaving one woman unconscious, police said. About two dozen people were injured. (www.usatoday.com....nado_x.htm)
According to the Central Meteorological Agency, the worst tornado previously recorded in Japan was just two months ago, when three people were killed on the southern island of Kyushu. The agency only has records of tornado -related deaths going back to 1961 (www.usatoday.com....nado_x.htm)
GS Igloo Tornado was conceived by Tom I think. I remember being drunk at The Bigfoot Lodge with him, He had said he was thinking about starting to meet a couple weeks a month with some other artist he knew and asked if I was down. Oh, the name I don't remember I was drunk (laist.com....allery.php)
TN Our goal is not to influence each others' individual talents, but rather help each other further develop our own artistic pursuits. I've grown enormously as an artist over the last 4 years, and it's because of the Igloo Tornado . I know I wouldn't be where I am witho (laist.com....allery.php)
RIEGELWOOD, N.C. Survivors picked through the rubble of their flattened homes Friday and divers planned to search a nearby pond after a tornado killed eight people in this riverside town, the area hardest hit by a devastating storm system that swept into the Northeast overnight (www.usatoday.com....very_x.htm)
Gov. Mike Easley said Friday that four of the 20 people injured when the tornado struck Riegelwood remained in "very, very critical condition ." Several of the injured were children (www.usatoday.com....very_x.htm)
The tornado that hit Riegelwood left about 100 people homeless, but all residents were believed to have been accounted for, Columbus County Sheriff Chris Batten said Friday. He said a water search team still planned to check a nearby pond for any additional victims (www.usatoday.com....very_x.htm)
In Louisiana, a man died Wednesday when a tornado struck his home. In South Carolina, a utility worker checking power lines Thursday during the storm was electrocuted. Two people died in car crashes in North Carolina as heavy rain pounded the stat (www.usatoday.com....very_x.htm)
The Alabama town of Prattville, counting some 35,000 residents, was struck Sunday evening by a violent tornado . Even though no death was registered there, serious damage was brought on by the dangerous weather. Almost 200 homes and 40 businesses were destroyed and around 50 people were injured during the tornado (www.efluxmedia.com....14181.html)
Meteorologist Jim Stefkovich from the National Weather Service57;s Birmingham office said that the tornado followed a path that was a quarter-mile wide and that it had winds of 140 to 150 mph (www.efluxmedia.com....14181.html)
Mayor Jim Byard considers that 60;God was watching over our city last night ,61; because the storm did not hit in the middle of the night. According to the Associated Press, Byard said that it would have been fatal if the tornado had struck at night. (www.efluxmedia.com....14181.html)
Joshua Wurman of the University of Oklahoma says he and his research team were about a half-mile away when they measured the record wind. Wurman says the actual speed in the part of the tornado measured could have been nine or 10 mph slower or faster than 318 mph. (www.usatoday.com....wur318.htm)
The 318-mph speed would put the tornado only 1 mph below an F-6 on the 0-to-6 Fujita scale. No tornado has ever been classified an F-6. Related: The Fujita tornado scale (www.usatoday.com....wur318.htm)
Because direct measurements of tornado winds are rare, meteorologists have used the severity of damage to classify tornado es. Conventional wind instruments cannot withstand powerful twisters, and scientists are just beginning to make close-up measurements with Doppler radars. (www.usatoday.com....wur318.htm)
You are an idiot. I inform all of the boys and girls about severe weather. If it weren57;t for me many more could have died. I am a symbol of tornado awareness and safety, look at Caruthersville, MO for example. I do look like I wanna get highhh though. (snarfd.com....do-mascot/)

So I57;m wondering the purpose of the more complicated Fujita scale. Is it used to more accurately determine the strength depending on what the tornado hit? It seems like it57;s a bit overboard . One would think that the old scale was sufficient (geography.about.com....-scale.htm)
Approximately 1,000 tornado es strike the United States every year. The results are often deadly. On average 80 deaths and 1,500 injuries occur each year from these natural disasters. Some tornado winds reach in excess of 250 mph. Tornado es can occur anywhere in the United States at anytime (reference.aol.com....ado-photos)
Greensburg, Kan., lies in ruin after a tornado struck the small town on May 5. The tornado was part of a violent storm system which resulted in at least 11 deaths. Officials say that 95 percent of the town was damaged. The twister was classified as an F5 (the most severe category) on the Fujita Damage Scale (reference.aol.com....ado-photos)
The grim images have become sadly familiar. Flattened homes, destroyed buildingsâand a president picking his way through the rubble to show his concern for the disaster victims. Today it was Greensburg, Kans., where a deadly tornado left at least 11 dead as it leveled most of the town last Friday. (www.beggarscanbechoosers.com....st-of.html)
But this wasnât Hurricane Katrina. On Tuesday, nearly two years after the storm that thrashed the Gulf Coast and savaged Bushâs approval ratings, the White House got caught up in a game of finger-pointing over the handling of the Greensburg tornado (www.beggarscanbechoosers.com....st-of.html)
It all started when Sebelius, a Democrat, told reporters that tornado recovery efforts would likely be slowed because much of the stateâs National Guard equipment remains in Iraq and Afghanistan. (www.beggarscanbechoosers.com....st-of.html)
I see where the right-wing nutcase blogs are already attacking Gov. Sebelius. I guess they think the tornado itself was a part of the Great Liberal Conspiracy to make their beloved hero Bush look bad (www.beggarscanbechoosers.com....st-of.html)

The colors indicate the intensity of the rain with green representing light rain, the yellow and orange for moderate rain and reds for the heaviest rain and hail. The classic hook pattern of the supercell from which a tornado was observed can be clearly see (www.srh.weather.gov....ornado.htm)
The exact processes for the formation of a funnel are not known yet. Recent theories suggest that once a mesocyclone is underway, tornado development is related to the temperature differences across the edge of downdraft air wrapping around the mesocyclon (www.srh.weather.gov....ornado.htm)
However, mathematical modelling studies of tornado formation also indicate that it can happen without such temperature patterns; and in fact, very little temperature variation was observed near some of the most destructive tornado es in history on May 3, 1999 in Oklahoma (www.srh.weather.gov....ornado.htm)
The funnel cloud of a tornado consists of moist air. As the funnel descends the water vapor within it condenses into liquid droplets. The liquid droplets are identical to cloud droplets yet are not considered part of the cloud since they form within the funnel (www.srh.weather.gov....ornado.htm)
After the funnel touches the ground and becomes a tornado , the color of the funnel will change. The color often depends upon the type of dirt and debris is moves over (red dirt produces a red tornado , black dirt a black tornado , etc.) (www.srh.weather.gov....ornado.htm)
The Fujita (F) Scale was originally developed by Dr. Tetsuya Theodore Fujita to estimate tornado wind speeds based on damage left behind by a tornado . An Enhanced Fujita (EF) Scale, developed by a forum of nationally renowned meteorologists and wind engineers, makes improvements to the original F scale. This EF Scale has replaced the original F scale, which has been used to assign tornado ratings since 1971. (www.srh.weather.gov....ornado.htm)
The original F scale had limitations, such as a lack of damage indicators, no account for construction quality and variability, and no definitive correlation between damage and wind speed. These limitations may have led to some tornado es being rated in an inconsistent manner and, in some cases, an overestimate of tornado wind speeds. (www.srh.weather.gov....ornado.htm)
"I was responsible for building one of the cameras on board there that took this picture of the tornado ," Fazio, of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics in Cambridge, Mass., tells DBIS.
