We are thinking of taking the train , next Summer , from Helsinki to Savonlinna for the opera festival. Has anyone done this journey ? Is it scenic? Did you stay in Savonlinna ? If so, can you recommend a hotel in easy walking distance of the castle ? Thanks! (www.tripadvisor.com....nland.html)

You could take a train from Helsinki to Savonlinna . Savonlinna is a small town in the most beautiful lake area in Finland . The train takes you through beautiful lake scenery. A world famous opera festival takes place in Savonlinna every July, so it will be really lively at that time. (www.tripadvisor.com....nland.html)

2. World Cell Phone Throwing Championships Finland is the home of cellphone manufacturer Nokia, but it is unclear if they have anything to do with this weird event. Ever wanted to throw your phone? Join the World Cell Phone Throwing Championships taking place each August in Savonlinna , Finland . (goscandinavia.about.com....inland.htm)

I do not believe that you can hire a car from Punkaharju in the middle of winter Savonlinna would be a better bet. Taxis operate normally, but like I pointed out, 26 December could be a busy day. (www.tripadvisor.com....nland.html)

I am biased because I am Finnish. But I think I have eye for the beauty of the Punkaharju area. It is worth of a car holiday , you can drive through the most beautiful lake district of Finland . Savonlinna is close, so you can choose a hotel in Punkaharju and visit the Opera Festival and concerts if you are ready. more (www.tripadvisor.com....nland.html)

- It's hard to write while sitting in a car. When we were driving to Savonlinna I tried to write down a sketch of this post but in the end it was impossible. My writing looked horrible. (learning-things....?mode=full)

60;These festivals are not just about opera, but about the locale, too,61; says Guy Barzilay, a leading New York -based agent who represents lyric artists. 60;And we love sending our singers to perform at festivals, because that means we get to go, too!61; One of Barzilay57;s favorite festivals is also one that57;s relatively (pardon the pun) unsung: Savonlinna in, of all places, Finland . 60;It57;s a gorgeous location, a castle from 1475 on an island in a lake that you have to take a boat to get to,61; he says, 60;and they use the castle as the backdrop to the operas.61; Savonlinna has gained a reputation as a secret gem festival; one of the soloists performing next summer will be none other than Roberto Alagna. So, like I said yesterday , I went to Savonlinna again today. I wanted to buy new notebooks, pens and other things for school, and some new clothes, too. Well, the school stuff was a piece of cake: I just walked to a book store, bought everything I needed there (plus one new book) and that was it. It made me happy, 'cause I love buying new notebooks I actually have an obsession for pretty notebooks. See, everytime I see a new beautiful notebook I usually just have to buy it even though I wouldn't need it. :D I like them, okay? And well, I suppose if I really want to go to an university to study Finnish, I'm going to need loads of notebooks. *chuckle* (learning-things....?mode=full)

As you probably know, the great country of Finland is home to Nokia, the Savonlinna Opera Festival and Renny Harlin . It's also home to Santa Claus (played in the film by Paul Giamatti Vince Vaughn is his black-sheep brother ) and Santa's Village, where the winner of our trip will get to tour during a six-day, five-night stay. While in all likelihood Paul Giamatti will not be there to greet you, Santa will be, and perhaps you'll even be able to whisper a wish into his ear. So give us the funniest, most clever, jolliest caption you've got. The winner will be announced at the launch of our next contest, (www.cinematical.com....on-this-1/)

Once there was a little paper company in Finland called Nokia. They started making plastic boots, and that didn't work out too well, and then decided to give mobile phones a shot. Soon, everyone in the country had one, and soon, everyone was having that love-hate relationship with this technology. In 2000, the Finns started getting even with the first Mobile Phone Throwing World Championship , held in Savonlinna , Finland . There are traditional "over the shoulder" distance throws, and more recently Freestyle was added, where aesthetics, style and creative choreographics and Naomi Campbell imitations are judged. All phones are properly recycled; first prize is, unfortunately, a new cellphone. (gizmodo.com..../index.xml)
