As for aesthetics, I like matte-finished blued steel and satin-finished wood. To my eye, synthetic stocks just do not cut it in the aesthetics department, nor does stainless steel. I best like rifles that are beautiful, and looks are not the end of it. I simply like the traditional feel and sound of wood over synthetic. I like the conservativeness of matte-finished blued metal rather than the gaudiness of stainless. There are times when choices must be made, when stainless and synthetics are preferable, but in this instance, aesthetics are sacrificed in the hope that the newer materials might provide more serviceability. Put side by side, it is difficult to tell the new Colt Cowboy from an actual SAA, and there is no question but that Colt has taken great care to ensure that the handling characteristics, balance, style, and overall flavor of the classic original have been preserved in the updated gun. The shape and size of the frame, cylinder dimensions and fluting, grip configuration, barrel length, caliber, sights, and flat mainspring hammer function remain the same. The artificial case-hard finish on the frame closely resembles the appearance of true casehardened steel, and while the satin blue finish on the grip frame, the cylinder, and the barrel is not as high polish as the original, its overall effect is the same. I have to say the current finished product is much superior in this regard than the first prototypes I handled at the initial new product announcement over a year ago. George Nelson never named the different lamp designs and they were simply given numbers by Howard Miller. A large Saucer lamp was simply sold under Bubble Lamp H-727 , a large Ball lamp was sold under Bubble Lamp H-725 .
