Please do not plan a visit to the San Francisco Zoo in the next few days as authorities continue their investigation into the tragic encounter that took place there Christmas Day between an escaped tiger and three young men. It is still unclear at this time how the Siberian tiger, Tatiana, was able to get beyond the high walls and moat of her grotto. On Wednesday, the zoo was closed out of respect for the three patrons and will remain so Thursday and Friday . When Christmas arrives next Tuesday and Kwanzaa on Wednesday, it'll mean only one week until the New Year flips the calendar to 2008. Thinking of the New Year, The New York Times just this past week posted a Top 53 of "Places to Go in 2008." The list promoted an exciting mix of destinations, from Laos to Liverpool , Tunisia to Tuscany , Miami to Mozambique. In a list such as this, my first instinct always is to scan for San Francisco and sure enough, the city made the cut. No. 39, in between Namibia and Detroit , Michigan. The reason cited for San Francisco 's selection was the California Academy of Sciences , set to open in October 2008. As the newspaper states, "it won't just be a stunning architectural addition to San Francisco " when it's completed, but one with a goal of being "the greenest museum in the world." In this photo, you can see one of the 1.7 million individual plants that will cover the living roof of the museum. Designed by architect Renzo Piano, the museum will feature seven hills, 2.5 acres, and nine different species native to northern California (and which thrive within the urban-park confines of Golden Gate Park. San Francisco International Airport has San Francisco Airporter buses available that travel to San Francisco and other destinations in the Bay Area. These buses depart from outside the Baggage Claim area and depart every 12-30 minutes. These buses are in operation from 6:20 AM to midnight every day. Besides the BART these buses are the cheapest way to get to your destination in the Bay Area. In 1887, the Balclutha sailed her maiden voyage to San Francisco from Wales in 140 days. The ship was a cargo transport, beginning with grain trade between Europe and San Francisco . The Balclutha later called at other ports and was eventually transferred to the Hawaiian registry.
