Eamon Duffy manages somehow or other to fit two thousand years of papal history into less than 300 lavishly illustrated and very readable pages. He captures our attention with his opening description of the first century rather unpapal Roman church, and holds it as he paints with broad brush the great movements and epochs of the papacy and of western Christianity, adoring it throughout with wonderful stories illumining the all too human nature of the popes. He knows his subject, chooses well among the masses of available materials, and treats the popes be they saint or sinner - with fairness and understanding; he describes with even hand the enormous good and the lamentable damage this one institution has accomplished. Those who consider the papacy a monolith will be surprised by the variety of forms it has taken in the past and is capable of in years to come, by the many ways it has sought for greater power, and the many opposing forces that have held its excesses in check. Given that many of the upgrades on the TX-SR805 are designed to improve audio performance, we were excited to sit down and listen to some music. We started off with The Derek Trucks Band's Joyful Noise and were not disappointed. Trucks ' slide guitar was emotive as ever, and the TX-SR805 delivered rich, detailed sound. We switched gears and put on Charles Mingus' The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady , which sounded particularly lively, with the horns having a rich and textured quality. Overall, the TX-SR805 compared favorably with the more expensive STR-DA5300ES, although we'd give the slight nod to the STR-DA5300ES, which sounded just a tad cleaner and more detailed to our ears. The day was spent in again looking over the city. Chicago is emphatically a city of beautiful diners (?), splendid houses and magnificent equipages. Certainly no city can boast of finer or better houses. The people are kind & courteous to strangers , cheerfully giving any information & answering any questions that may be asked them. The truth is we have never met with more universal kindness than we are receiving on this pleasant outing. We have witnessed only one thing which excites our condemnation of this otherwise kind & courteous people, and that is a seeming disregard for the holy Sabbath. A great deal of work is done here on the Sabbath by authority of the city government and both saint & sinner act as though the Sabbath was established especially for worldly pleasure and enjoyment. They ride and drive & walk in their beautiful parks, attend places of amusement & drink beer on the Sabbath seemingly more than any other day. And both prince and pauper are bitterly opposed to closing the worlds fair on Sunday or doing anything else that will keep a dollar out of Chicago , or interfere with the success of any undertaking (members.tripod.com....ex-10.html)
We took the large and elegant steamer Virginian at 9 oclock A.M. & sailed up the lake to Milwaukee . This was our first experience upon so large a body of water as Lake Michigan, the first time we had ever been out of sight of land. One can imagine what exciting & thrilling sensations we experienced as we gazed out upon the broad expanse of waters with naught to intercept our vision but the dim & distant horizon. To feel ourselves rocked in the cradle of the deep & hear the manner of the sad sad waves, nothing is better calculated (?) to inspire one with awe & reverence for the great Father who created the universe than a voyage at sea. This everyone should take at least once in their lifetime. We found Milwaukee quite a large city, perhaps 250,000 inhabitants. Thanks for your hard-nosed commentary on Martha Stewart and the lost art of making stuff! I don't personally care whether Martha is a saint or a sinner - she is probably both, and perhaps her humbling lesson will benefit women in prison from now on - but whether we can still sew buttons and make our own curtains is more than window dressing in our lives. It's all about self-reliance and pride in beautiful craftsmanship, a quality sadly missing in a spoiled America that nowadays imports nearly everything from China and goes to war to keep the rest of the world supplying our insatiable "way of life." Each time I read about the selling out of the younger generation, the shackling of dutiful college grads to high student debt and the national deficit, I am reminded that we have traded self-sufficiency for elite dependence.
