On Friday 22nd our Battn went aboard the Northwest under orders for Battleford. The others were to follow, as soon as possible. We expected to march against Poundmaker & his Crees on arrival at Battleford. We reached the town on Sunday 24th May and remained on board till Monday. Colonel Otter & Queen's officers came on board to see the General . A battery officers & some men came on. Early Monday morning we disembarked and marched through Battleford to a level plain outside of town and on which the Queen's own, a Battery & Mounted Police were encamped. We pitched our tents a quarter of a mile below the Q.O.R. and a half mile from the Battle river. The 90th arrived shortly after and settled down. On our left the General quarters were with the Midland. The Queens birthday was celebrated in the forenoon. All the troops taking part in the ceremony , "a march past" was gone through and the big guns fired off. The report of the guns must have struck terror into the aborigines for shortly after a messenger from Poundmaker dashed in, and going to the General said the chief would surrender at 10 am on Tuesda (www.nhb.com....eyoung.htm)
Nearly every song on the disc is a keeper. "Something New" has cool piano chords it's like Elton John meets Live On the Planet and Dale's cello makes an appearance near the song's end that brilliantly adds another level to the sonic space. The recorded-live instrumental "Messenger" sounds like Chic at a low-budget garage rehearsal. "Z Song" has a Rhodes electric piano that pulses like chirping crickets across a neighborhood on a quiet, muggy summer night. There's lots of quality stuff going on. Songs grab me music-first, and the Systematics have me by the collar in that department. Lyrics take longer to sink in, and so far, the band's, largely written by Bellenoit, slip by me in wordy streams. But a great line that did jump out is from "Neck of the Woods": "Everybody's acting like queens and kings / and I ain't gonna drink what the waitress brings / (in this neck of the woods). Now, another interesting point is that when a person is being repatriated, they are outside of any law whilst they are in transit, they belong to no country and peculiarly they are not that protected from abuse by international law, on the UK Hercules would be a Queens Messenger , one of them lives near my brother in law in Christchurch and he is quite boastful of what he does, beats up returnees, possessions stolen, people even die and has cooperated also with stuff with US officals as well who he boasts are just as handy for sticking the boot into an already miserable persons possibly last moments of lif (www.beggarscanbechoosers.com....camps.html)
