Mother Jones presents not only the life story of an inspiring individual, but also an insightful overview of the labor movement. Frequent quotations and other primary -source documents add immediacy to the presentation. Queen Victoria is especially interesting, pointing out that, although the queen led the British Empire during its most powerful years, she herself was not a supporter of women's rights. Boxed excerpts from other books and from the queen's own letters and journals include her reactions to her proposed marriage to Albert, her advice to the police on how to catch Jack the Ripper , and a condolence letter sent to Mrs. Lincoln after the president's assassination.
