Quatermass And The Pit

But this also reminds me of the now classic film Quatermass and the Pit â a movie which genuinely needs to be remade, and I would gladly serve as a screenplay consultant â in which London Tube excavations uncover a buried spaceship. out of which emerge weird aliens intent on vanquishing the Queen's English. Or something like that (bldgblog.blogspot.com....chive.html)

'The Quatermass Xperiment' was the first Hammer horror/SF movie and despitebeing close to fifty years old is still very creepy and entertaining. Oldieswho saw the original British TV version (now lost, I believe ) claim that itwas superior, and as I have compared the TV and Hammer movie versions of'Quatermass And The Pit ', I tend to believe them. Anyway, the movie versionis still very, very good. Brian Donlevy 's Quatermass is much gruffer, moretake charge and less likeable than Andre Morell's or Andrew Keir 'sQuatermass, but once you get used to his approach it works well with thematerial. Richard Wordsworth is surprisingly good as the astronaut whoreturns from space with, well, a little extra, and Jack Warner is fine asInspector Lomax. The special effects for the most part are very effective, and I think the movie has really stood the test of time. The basic conceptmay have been used before in SF literature, but the movie undoubtedly had astrong influence on subsequent similar movies. Quatermass creator NigelKneale is one of the most important science fiction popularizers of thepost-WW2 period, and his TV shows and movies have had a huge impact on thegenre, most notably on 'The X-Files' (www.imdb.com/title/tt0049646/)

Barbara Shelley has appeared in many good films including Cat Girl (1957), Village of the Damned (1960), The Gorgon (1964) and Quatermass and the Pit (1967). She57;s undoubtedly one of Britain57;s greatest 60;Scream Queens61; and she will always be one of my favorite actresses thanks to her amazing performance as Helen in Dracula : Prince of Darkness , which also happens to be one of the finest sequels ever mad (cinebeats.blogs....m/2007/07/)

The films featured are (*deep breath*) Blood From The Mummies, Demons Of The Mind , Fear In The Night, One Million Years BC, Plague Of The Zombies, Quatermass And The Pit , Rasputin , The Mad Monk, The Reptile, Dracula , Prince Of Darkness , Frankenstein Created Women, Horror Of Frankenstein , Scars Of Dracula , She, To The Devil A Daughter, The Vengeance Of She , The Witches , Slave Girls, The Nanny, The Devil Rides Out and The Viking Queen (www.cinedelica.com/1950s/)

This starts out with an alien spaceship being found during the blizt , ahomage to QUATERMASS AND THE PIT no doubt but as the series progresses itcomes more as an insult than a homage. I rate Nigel Kneale as television`sgreatest ever writer and QUATERMASS AND THE PIT as the greatest drama everto have been transmitted under the telefantasy banner and to have INVASIONEARTH pay homage in this way is an obscenity . INVASION EARTH is possiblythe worst telefantasy series ever made by the BBC . It is trulyawfu (us.imdb.com/title/tt0140743/)

Seems like I'm in a minority enjoying this one! It amazes me that so manypeople are quick to put the boot in to this (admittedly) silly butentertaining b-grade post-apocalyptic thriller yet line up to watch theabsolutely awful and overblown Star Wars movies . Yes, I said b-grade,because despite the budget being close to $100 million, that's exactly whatit is, a b-grade sci fi movie, no more, no less. Fans of Roy Ward Baker 's'Quatermass and the Pit ', Larry Cohen 's 'Q: The Winged Serpent' and TobeHooper's 'Lifeforce ', all of which 'Reign Of Fire ' reminded me of at variouspoints, will enjoy this one more than the Blockbuster crowd. Christian Bale ('American Psycho ') and Matthew McConaughey ('Frailty ') are both pretty goodas the leader of an underground community and a hardass military manrespectively, who both have different approaches to their shared problem -the ongoing threat of dragon attacks. Yes, in this future dragons are realand have devastated the world, and only a handful of human survivors exist (us.imdb.com/title/tt0253556/)

Science fiction mourns Nigel Kneale because he was one of the genre's most illuminating humanists - not a sentimentalist like Bradbury, or a myth-maker like Frank Herbert, but a confrontational writer in the tradition of Orwell and Huxley, who used the genre as a metaphor for the problematic times in which we find ourselves. He often painted cynical landscapes of our future, and found fault with us as a species , and he developed into a masterful satirist whose tweaks at Mankind's expense proved just as prophetic as his works undertaken in a more somber mood. He predicted our dire fascination with "reality television" in 1968's THE YEAR OF THE SEX OLYMPICS; the cosmic "ball of twine" narrative of QUATERMASS AND THE PIT , which puts forth a frightening theory about the origin of our species , was a startling forebear of stories like THE DA VINCI CODE; and even his HALLOWEEN III script, as I noticed last night or this morning, is every bit as critical and satirical of the television medium as David Cronenberg 's contemporaneous VIDEODROM (videowatchdog.blogspot.com....chive.html)

I mention this here, because the fictional-text crunching has long left obsessive Victoriana, and now extends into the 1950s, which 1) allows a gratifying opening sequence of Mina Harker smashing in James Bond's teeth and lamenting his thuggery and misogyny, and 2) opens the playing field to a dazzling, crazed expanse of film and television referents. Cinephiles who could normally take or leave such delights as singularly dirty-mouthed Shakespeare pastiches, are advised to check it totally out. Carry On in-jokes! Avengers obscuriana in the opening pages! A Gorgo gag that's worth the price of admission! A Chaplin reference that will blow your goddamned mind! Extended Whatever Happened to Baby Jane? riff includes cruel Rock Hudson joke! You won't believe what you're seeing. Bone up on your Quatermass and the Pit and Fireball XL5 creatures before diving in (explodingkineto....gspot.com/)
