The location of the first Town Hall in Hillsburgh has not beenestablished, but it was the site of early Nomination Meetings. Thesecond Town Hall was erected in 1887. In 1825, theTown Meeting was held at the house of Philander Hopkins; and in 1826,at the house of Matthew Smith. In 1827, it was held in the house ofStephen Clark, and at this meeting, Nehemiah Hopkins was appointed Town Clerk. In the New England States, the word Town still means township, and this may be the reason itwas used by the early settlers. When Premier John Robarts formed the Government in 1961, heinvited John Root to serve on the Ontario Water Resources Commission,of which he became Vice Chairman, and Chairman. John had served as President of the Baptist Convention in Ontarioand Quebec , representing 52,000 Baptists. In his maiden speech in theLegislature in 1952, he advocated setting up a Pioneer Village topreserve the story of Ontario's development. One of the two houses was where Alexander McLaughlin, the notedpoet, lived. One of his verses and a sketch of a sheaf of wheat werecarved into a stone over the barn door in the John Jackson barn. One citizen who lived to a remarkable age was Mrs. James Young , the former Agnes Smith, who died in 1939, in her 107th year. Her daughter, Barbara, died the same day, in her 80th year, and a double funeral was held (www.town.erin.on.ca....story.html)
