The actress, born La Raine Johnson in Roosevelt, Utah, played nurse Mary Lamont in seven "Dr. Kildare" films, opposite Lew Ayres and Lionel Barrymore , between 1939 and 1941. In the last one, "Dr. Kildare's Wedding Day ," her character was shopping for wedding furniture when she was hit by a truck and died. (blogs.sltrib.com....rchive.htm)
Actor Lew Ayres is buried in Westwood Memorial which is on Glendon Avenue in Los Angeles. Lew may be best remembered for his role as a disillusioned German soldier in the 1930 classic All Quiet on the Western Front . (www.famousroots.com....chive.html)
Lew Ayres is the student leader of a bunch of German school boys in1914 who listen to the voice of their school master and enlist in thewar that's just been declared. The whole class enlists and that's nothyperbole because in Germany at the time it was the boys who got theeducation and the girls if they got it, got it separately from theboys. Lew Ayres became a star with this film and it effected him so deeplythat he became a committed pacifist which caused later problems in hiscareer. He's the voice of reason and civilization and the voice of alost generation of Germans who would never have listened to thedemagogic appeals of the Nazis. (us.imdb.com....ercomments)
In All Quiet on the Western Front (1930), actor Lew Ayres played Paul Bäumer, a German soldier disillusioned by the horrors of World War I (the iconic scene of his reaching for a butterfly on the battlefield remains a classic image in world cinema). (moviemorlocks.com/blog)
Contrary to long-standing rumor, Zasu Pitts was never in the silent version. However, Pitts DOES appear in the original 1930 trailer as Lew Ayres ' mother. The scene with her in bed is excerpted in the trailer. (us.imdb.com....629/trivia)
In part because of his experience in playing the part of Paul Baumer, Lew Ayres became a conscientious objector during the Second World War. His films were banned in over 100 Chicago theaters. (us.imdb.com....629/trivia)
Lew Ayres , the man who plays Paul Baumer, convincingly portrays themain character in many ways. First of all, the sheer innocence of hisfacial appearance adds a poignant touch to the film, because theoverwhelming theme of the story is how the war effects all young people ofeach nation, whether that person dies in the trenches or survives only tolament his days in the war . Ironically, when the film was initially beingput together, Remarque, the novelist who won critical acclaim for writingthe book, was asked to play the role of Paul. Having seen time in the warthe producers must have thought him aptly prepared to play the role. Buthedeclined because he had other commitments and because he felt he was notsuch a great actor. Lucky for us, because Ayres gives a powerfulperformance. Other characters with relatively minor roles have majorimportance in the film because they portray touching, heart wrenching scenesof death. These peripheral characters all help add to the general tone ofthe film (and the book) because they show how dark and terrible the war canbe; and they in turn show how propaganda can be so harmful, because most ofthe soldiers in Paul's regiment are volunteers who receive a very rudeawakening when they discover what the war is really all about (us.imdb.com....ercomments)

As Johnny tells her: "I've been working since I was 10. I want to find out why I'm working. The answer can't be just to pay bills or to pile up more money. I can't find that out sitting behind some desk in an office, so as soon as I get enough money together I'm gonna knock off for a while - quit. I want to save part of my life for myself. There's a catch to it, though: It's got to be part of the young part. You know: retire young, work old - come back and work when I know what I'm working for." I can't imagine a healthier attitude toward labor and life - and the sparkling performances of Grant, Hepburn, and Lew Ayres as her alcoholic brother Ned, entombed by Father's fortune and expectations, make the movie breathe. "Holiday " is a cautionary tale. For people like Johnny and especially Ned (as well as for Vincent in "Time Out"), a life sentence of obligatory service in the "family business " may offer security, but it's also a living death. Tightly directed by Robert Siodmak (who directed THE KILLERS that sameyear, which was the film that made stars out of Burt Lancaster and AvaGardner), this intriguing film flies by at a brisk 85 minutes and isfull of twists and turns. Although the film contains an excellent cast(among the supporting members include Thomas Mitchell and Lew Ayres ),the mystery in the story is a simple one. Even non-mystery fans will beentertained by the film, since the plot is rather uncomplicated. Thefilm was later adapted for radio as a half-hour episode of The ScreenDirector&s Playhouse, also starring Olivia. I have a recording of thisepisode on audio tape and Olivia&s performance is fascinating: shelowers and raises the pitch of her voice whenever she plays a separatetwin in order for the audience to tell the difference between the two. This episode is a must for Olivia&s fans. From Henry Fonda as the Secretary of State nominee and Franchot Tone asthe President, to Lew Ayres as the Vice President, Walter Pidgeon asthe senator majority leader and, in his final role, Charles Laughton asthe instigating senator from South Carolina, the strong cast, individually and collectively, gave impressive performances. Familiarcharacter actors including Paul Ford (from The Phil Silvers Show),Edward Andrews, and Burgess Meredith were also very good. I waspleasantly surprised to see TV icon Betty White in a short but pointedperformance as the only female Senate member. (us.imdb.com/title/tt0055728/)
One of the most effective antiwar films ever made, this drama follows the adventures of several young men who join the German army seeking glory. Instead, they find terror, hysteria, and meaningless death. The movie's pacifist message is so powerful that the film was banned or condemned in several militaristic countries, and the film's star, Lew Ayres , later declared himself a conscientious objector during World War II (though he repeatedly risked his life serving as a medic). The movie's visual effects and mobile camera work are remarkable, particularly the crane shots of battle scenes involving thousands of extras and the tracking shots along the trenches. The dialogue scenes are dated, however, with the actors often seeming to blare out their lines. The contrast reflects the movie industry's state of transition, moving from visually sophisticated silent features to sound films that were still artistically primitive. (1930) Lewis Milestones Oscar winning production of Erich Marie Remarques novel stars Lew Ayres as the idealist schoolboy who joins the German army with visions of glory and honor, endures a dehumanizing boot camp under a brutal drill Sergeant, and has his idealism ground away by the war machine. It's the first anti-war masterpiece and still one of the greatest, a horrific and poetic portrait of innocence , sanity, and young lives lost in pointless warfare in the name of patriotism. 5. All Quiet on the Western Front (1930) For me, All Quiet on the Western Front is a poetic work that remains the most powerful of all pacifist, antiwar films. Based on the semi-autobiographical novel by Erich Maria Remarque, the story follows a group of idealistic young Germans who leave the classroom to fight in World War I. They all become disillusioned and are killed in combat. There's a memorable sequence where the central character Paul Bäumer (Lew Ayres ) is trapped in a shell hole with a mortally wounded Frenchman. The roughest duty of the war may well have been reserved for Lew Ayres . He declared himself a conscientious objector, and was pilloried for it. The studios distanced themselves, and even other stars attacked him in the press. Ayres wound up in the medical corps and did great, according to commanding officers, eventually picking up the pieces of a tattered career upon discharge. This September 1942 profile represents the tentative, though generally favorable shift in public opinion after Lew got into the Armyâs medical unit. Now those of you who haven't said who cares and signed off by now are probably asking, "That's all well and good, but did this unique specimen of woodwork ever make its way into any other movies?". Well, as a matter of fact it did , at least the photo at the left convinces me that it did. Do you suppose Lew Ayres called Hal Roach and said, "Hal .Lew. Buddy, I just caught that new rib-tickling Laurel and Hardy laff-riot of yours, and I've just got to use that bitchin' nightclub table in my next picture!". And indeed, there it is, sharing a scene with Lew Ayres in Okay, America, presumably the table's first appearance in a dramatic vehicle. Isn't it great when some obscure nugget of film history reveals itself? But that isn't all, because like Lew, I was so caught up with that bitchin' table that I decided to see if maybe it could be recreated - and that's the photo on the right. As you can see, the guy who built it is a genius, and boy, are those chairs uncomfortable . Authentic, yes, right down to the last detail , but hell to sit in (greenbriarpictureshows.blogspot.com....chive.html)
It is interesting that a John Heyres, probably a single man, came to Burlington, New Jersey from Hull, Yorkshire aboard the SHIELD in 1678 from "The History of Burlington, New Jersey," by William E. Schermerhorn. While Heyres may simply be a phonetic spelling of the common Ayres, as in Lew Ayres , it intriguingly contains elements of the Heysham name and could be a mistranscription. Note that John Heyres, so spelled, disappears from history after this. Shipmates of John Heyres on the SHIELD included Godfrey Hancock and Thomas Revell, who teamed together with John Heesom to buy a mill, below, and John and Godfrey Newbold, two other single men. John Newbold's father, Michael , eventually ended up owning John Heesom's share of the mill. (balder.prohosting.com...._Line.html)
All Quiet on the Western Front is important filmmaking that still ringstrue today. The film deals with World War I combat through the eyes of theenemy (the Germans). For the first time ever it was realized howheartbreaking war really is, for all involved. One key message within thefilm is that innocence cannot survive on the battlefield. War is an awfulthing that has no true winners, just losers. Brilliant performances fromall involved make the film believable and accurate for the most part. Avery young Lew Ayres is the best as his story creates tension for the entirefilm. This is perhaps the first film that proved that the cinema could be atruly imperative medium. The film was scorned by many in the U.S. as somethought that showing the Germans as sympathetic characters was in poortaste. Germans hated the film because of its anti-war message. Hitler wasabout to become a world power and he wanted all Germans to be excited andenthusiastic about combat. This film goes against those ideals (us.imdb.com....ercomments)
The characters, most of them young soldiers, are played very simply, evenplainly, but this is by no means a weakness rather, it allows the movie toshow what war is like for real soldiers rather than for idealized orstereotyped characters. The two most important characters are developedmore fully, and are played well. Louis Wolheim's resourceful 'Kat' is theliveliest of the soldiers, and as Paul, Lew Ayres is quite understated butvery believable. His character is well-chosen as the focal point of most ofthe movie. (us.imdb.com....ercomments)
The motion picture, considered among the screen's most powerfulindictments of the futility of war, contains many excellent sequencesand set-pieces which still keep their power: the pair of boots beingcontinually taken over as successive owners are killed; Lew Ayres talking impotently on about the brotherhood of man and the futility ofkilling as he watches his French enemy die beside him in a shellcrater; Ayres carrying the wounded Wolheim on his back and talkingcheerfully to him, ignoring he has been killed by a shell splinter; andof course, the closing scene of the hand reaching out from the trenchesto seize a butterfly only to fall back slowly as an enemy's bulletfalls home. (us.imdb.com....ercomments)
Another of the series' true curiosities is "Okay, America!" It stars Lew Ayres as a Walter Winchell-type newspaper columnist read by everybody in New York who ends up involved in a story so screwy he has to go to the White House and brief an outraged president to straighten it out. They don't make them like this anymore, which is why we're so crazy about them today. (www.calendarlive.com....8930.story)
