Despite the picture's novel interpretation of the battle of the sexes, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes has been attacked by contemporary critics for such obviously masculine touches as the set decor in the Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend number, in which female bodies are lashed to chandeliers as part of their support structure. Though comparisons between Monroe and the new millennial bad girls hardly seem fair. At the time Monroe took it all off for Stern she was 36 and had a handful of homerun movie roles ("The Misfits ," "Some Like It Hot ," "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes ") to her credit. Lohan is 21 and can credit 2004's "Mean Girls " as her career high point. While both Monroe and Lohan struggled with addiction, Lohan is hardly the tragic figure the unraveling Monroe was in 1962. In point of fact, Heath Ledger - who died from a fatal overdose of prescription drugs in January - had more in common with Monroe. He was another promising actor who - it would seem - was his own worst enem (blog.washingtonpost.com....id=entnews)

An ambitious woman known to do crazy stunts for publicity, Marie took to the stage, nightclub and TV circuits once her film career bottomed out after the spectacular arrival of Marilyn Monroe . On the road in summer stock and dinner theater engagements, Marie appeared to fine advantage in such well-suited vehicles as "Bus Stop ," "Born Yesterday and "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes ." One of her last roles was in animated form as a voice in the cartoon &Where's Huddles?& (1970). Married three times, she had an adopted son, Gregson, by her last marriage to TV producer Robert Fallon . Her first two unions, which ended in divorce, were to director Nick Grinde and actor Allan Nixon . Marie had undergone surgery several times for cancer by the time she died at age 56 in 1972. Beautiful, dark-haired, big-boned actress with a direct personality, she is known as much for her lingerie commercials as for her film career. She first appeared in film in Howard Hughes 's The Outlaw (1943), then went on to star opposite Bob Hope in The Paleface (1948), and Marilyn Monroe in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (1953). In the mid-1950s, she formed Russ-Field Productions with her husband, but this did not substantially improve her box office appeal. For a few months in 1971, she appeared in the lead role of a Broadway production of Company then turned to commercials where she pitched the 18-hour bra for Playtex. Not to mention the historical record of women in the late-20th and early-21st centuries that these books provide. Just as movies are idealized versions of real-life situations, these novels have the potential to be a record of what a large population of women dream about and aspire to. We certainly don't think of the women of the 1950s as being exactly like the women in How to Marry a Millionaire or Gentlemen Prefer Blondes , but these movies give us an idea of what the archetypes of that time were. Marilyn Monroe starred in many great movies in her short career, including Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (1953), How to Marry a Millionaire (1953), and The Seven Year Itch (1955). But the blonde bombshell passed on the lead in Goodbye Charlie (1964), a comedy directed by Vincente Minnelli , in which a gangster dies and gets reincarnated as a woman. Debbie Reynolds took the part instead. Monroe also refused a starring role in the Western Heller in Pink Tights (1960) because she believed the role was weak. Sophia Loren took the part, wearing a blonde wig (entertainment.howstuffworks.com....roles1.htm)

There are those men who swear this title isn't true, and in many cases they're right, but if you had a choice between Jane Russell and Marilyn Monroe in Howard Hawks ' "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes ," come on, who would you choose? Not that Jane isn't hot; her distinct dark-brown beauty and decency is important to "Gentlemen," serving as the temper to Marilyn's gold-digging pluck. You see, the brunette gal understands MM (who, incidentally, had the same colorist as Harlow over two decades later): She's got a heart of gold, it's just heaving for diamonds . This, of course, leads to one of the greatest blonde musical numbers in cinema history: "Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend ," extolling the virtue of having your assets and eating them too. The number is one of the greatest blonde contributions to world history, not to mention the inspiration for another famous blonde - Madonna (movies.msn.com....ews=126875)
Marilyn Monroes famous photo shoot of 1962 was done just six weeks before she died. Marilyn had already starred in such classics as Gentlemen Prefer Blondes and Some Like It Hot . She was 36 at the time of her death. She had personally crossed out the photos she did not like from the series created with Stern in red marker; the photographer later published these as well, showing an uncensored Marilyn (www.efluxmedia.com....14212.html)

Legally Blonde actress Witherspoon will play singer Lorelei Lee in a remake of the 1953 musical Gentlemen Prefer Blondes , which first shot buxom Monroe to worldwide fame. What's more, Hollywood A-listers Julia Roberts and Cameron Diaz are said to be battling it out for the co-starring role of Dorothy Shaw originally played by Jane Russell . Written at a very young age, THE COUNTRY GIRLS established Edna O'Brien very early as an important Irish novelist, and in later books she would continue the adventures of her two heroines here, Caithleen (Kate) and Birdget (Baba), in their search for love and a place in the world. This comic novel is very much in the tradition of number of other much-loved comic Bildungsromans by other twentieth-century women novelists: I CAPTURE THE CASTLE by Dodie Smith, THE PURSUIT OF LOVE by Nancy Mitford, and (perhaps surpisingly) GENTLEMEN PREFER BLONDES by Dorothy Parker. As in all those other novels, the central two characters are used as contrasts: Kate, the narrator, is bookish and romantic, while the hardedged Baba is out for experience and novelty. The settings of ruined country estate, convent school and Dublin boarding house add to the novelty of o'Brien's work (as does the simple lilting prose), but the greatest treat here is the character of Baba: pragmatic, mocking, alternately cruel and sentimental, she is one of the funniest characters in this subgenre of fiction , and one of the most memorabl (www.amazon.com....4/am841-20)

After appearing in Asphalt Jungle , Monroe appeared in All About Eve and Clash by Night . By this time her agents had found out that she had made a nude calendar and wanted her to deny it all to her fans. However, Monroe didn't deny it, saying that at the time she had needed the money. Her fans understood and the 'Golden Dreams' calendar became a much sought-after piece of memorabilia. Meanwhile, Monroe appeared in Let's Make It Legal and As Young As You Feel . But the film that really catapulted her to long-standing fame was Niagara in 1953, in which she played a bride with a desire to kill her husband. She performed so well that she was encouraged to take up roles in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes and How to Marry a Millionaire , which were hugely successful (www.bbc.co.uk..../A26655555)
Although the critics remained divided about Marilyn, the public had long since made up its mind that Marilyn Monroe was a bona fide star. In general, I enjoyed this show, as it blended together classic musicals(Singin' In The Rain, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes ), along with newer ones(TheRocky Horror Picture Show, Moulin Rouge ) and was quite enjoyable. Thereweresome slight shocks that made you wonder whether voting had been totallyfairor not (I mean, is Grease really the GREATEST musical ever!?!), but theprogramme was mainly fine. Despite the fact that Denise Van Outen wasratherpainfully upbeat and full of herself, this was entertaining! With clipsfromthe different recipients (Cabaret , Gigi, My Fair Lady , among others) thisshow makes people see that musicals are still a worthwhile genre tokeep (www.imdb.com/title/tt0395313/)

The only downfall was that our new suite didn't have a jacuzzi tub, but DID have a fireplace, larger balcony and better view. I happily accepted! Our wrap around balcony could easily have fit 20 people, and the unobstructed view was truly amazing. Suite 16 was so quiet, and we were finally able to lounge in bed and enjoy that champagne that i mentioned earlier :) They offer complimentery dvd rentals about 3 dozen classics (including Play Misty for Me , Gentlemen Prefer Blondes and Dial M for Murder ) and 3 dozen new releases. We were there on a rainy, windy day, so it was wonderful to stay in and enjoy a movie with the heater and fireplace going! We even slept with the bedroom window slightly open because we love the sounds of a storm. It was so wonderful to snuggle under the down comforter and luxorious sheets! Howard Hawks (Howard Winchester Hawks), 1896-1977, American film director, b. Goshen, Ind. Although not as well known as such contemporaries as John Ford and Alfred Hitchcock , he has been critically acclaimed as one of the 20th cent.'s best motion picture directors. His directorial career began in the silent film era with The Road to Glory (1926). Hawks's uncomplicated and unpretentious style, visual clarity, and sense for crisp dialogue are evident in his more than 40 films, which cover an unusually wide variety of cinematic genres. Many of his works have become classics, including the war film The Dawn Patrol (1930), the gangster movie Scarface (1932), the screwball comedy Bringing Up Baby (1938), the romantic adventure To Have and Have Not (1944), the detective story The Big Sleep (1946), the Western Red River (1948), and the musical Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (1953). The lucid, direct style that made Hawks the ultimate Hollywood professional has been an important influence on many of today's filmmake (www.encyclopedia.com....sHowa.html)
Howard Hawks (1896-1977) is in the pantheon of American directors, and I was delighted to learn more about his work by watching the 55-minute 2001 documentary on him included with the DVD set. Jane didn't make another film until 1946 when she starred in Young Widow (1946). She had signed a seven year contract with Hughes and it seemed the only films he would put her in were those that displayed Jane in a very flattering light due to her body. Films such as His Kind of Woman (1951) and The Las Vegas Story (1952) did nothing to showcase her true acting abilities. Probably the pinnacle of her career was in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (1953) with Marilyn Monroe . This film showed Jane's comedic side very well. Jane did continue to make films throughout the 1950s, but the films were at times not up to par, particularly with Jane's talents being wasted in forgettable movies in order to show off her sexy side (sweepeabartender.blogspot.com....chive.html)
Been eating a lot of Raisin Bran Crunch lately. it's definitely become my favorite cereal, and when Albertson's put it on sale, 10 boxes for $15, I had to stock up! What makes it even better is that all the boxes I got were part of Kellogg's latest DVD offer. tomorrow I'll be mailing off the certificates and order form for a free copy of "Jumping Jack Flash," and when I have five more certificates ready, I'll send off for "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes ." IMHO, those are the only two movies being offered that are worth getting - and I'd get "Gentlemen" first, but Jessi wanted "Jack" (I don't think she cares for Marilyn Monroe movies. I know she doesn't like Monty Python either. and yeah, this is one of the reasons I've got a TV, VCR and DVD player in my office) (waffyjon.blogspot.com....chive.html)
Carol Channing's fame comes from two smashing successes on Broadway: as Lorelei in 1950's Gentlemen Prefer Blondes and as Dolly in 1964's Hello, Dolly! . Although she didn't get the film roles (the roles went to Marilyn Monroe and Barbra Streisand , respectively), Channing was associated with the characters her entire career and performed the plays thousands of times. She has appeared on TV and been in a handful of movies (notably in 1967's Thoroughly Modern Millie and 1994's animated Thumbelina ), but her career as an entertainer has been focused on the stage. Her distinctive appearance and voice have made her a favorite of both male and female impersonators. In 2002 she published her memoirs, Just Lucky I Guess (www.infoplease.com....nning.html)
The basic story is one that Darryl Zanuck seemed to love as it appeared in several Fox productions. Two attractive young women decide to leave the Texas hamburger stand for Miami in search of millionaire husbands. Just off the top of my head, this is the basic plot for Gentlemen Prefer Blondes , How to Marry a Millionaire and Three Coins in a Fountain . At least one of the young women will decide money isn't everything and marry some guy purely for love, but no one in the audience and certainly no one at the studio really believes that. The biggest weakness of Moon over Miami is not that it's fake, but that it cannot transcend its' fakeness (www.coffeecoffeeandmorecoffee.com....s/2007/05/)
