The Gallipoli peninsula took its name from the ancient city of Gallipoli s, whose exact location is unknown today, and which was originally founded by the Thracians, and later settled by immigrants from Phokai, Lesbos and Miletus. (www.anzacday.info....insula.htm)

To the southwest , also on the shore of the straight, is the town of Eceabat, (ancient name: Maydos) which faces the city of Canakkale on the other side of the straight. I am flying to Istanbul in late March this year and wanted to visit the battlefields and memorials on the Gallipoli Peninsular, most of the trips I have seen on the intnet are for ANZAC memorial's and Cemeteries, plus many take in Tro (www.tripadvisor.com....anbul.html)
