*Galaxy Quest * could have been a really good Saturday night sci-fi flick without the sexual programming and without the hateful use of God's name in vain WITH the four letter expletive and without the 11 uses of the three/four letter word vocabulary. And none of these ignominies helped the script or story. None. I guess PG has finally "grown up." Makes sense, I guess. Some of what used to be R is now PG-13, including full nudity and vulgar language. By the way, in numeric comparison with movies of 1995, *Galaxy Quest * should have been rated PG-13, a hard PG-13 (www.capalert.com....yquest.htm)
Two examples of most risque programming were when Nesmith kneeled over in a night shirt looking for his pants, exposed his ostensibly bare privates to the Thermians. In another scene, the "Galaxy Quest " Tech Sergeant and one of the Thermian women engaged in a physical exchange, clearly for sensual purposes. (www.capalert.com....yquest.htm)
Thermians from a galaxy far, far away had been monitoring the broadcasts ("historical documents") of the TV show "Galaxy Quest ." Impressed with the victories and tactics of the actors of the TV show, the Thermians pleaded with the TV Galaxy Quest commander, Jason Nesmith (Tim Allen ) to come to their ship in space to assume a command position in the on-going battles with an arch enemy who threatened the very existence of the Thermian race. Thinking the Thermians were representatives of another TV "gig", Nesmith took selfish advantage of the opportunity to rekindle his failing popularity. Once the inoffensive and passive Thermians convinced Nesmith of their sincerity, Nesmith enlisted the help of his TV show "crew" to assist the Thermians. Little did it matter that (in the movie) Nesmith's vanity could cost the Thermian race its very existence (www.capalert.com....yquest.htm)

Counter-programming the slew of serious Oscar contenders being released this month, DreamWorks is releasing the Star Trek spoof, Galaxy Quest (1999) this weekend. Jack Mathews of the New York Daily News is among the critics rejoicing in the relief from the heavy stuff, calling Quest, "colossally silly, often very funny." He adds that the film "is no masterpiece, but in a season dominated by films as heavy and about as time-consuming as brain surgery, a little brain candy is sweet." Jay Carr in the Boston Globe takes the metaphor further, calling the film "a clever, affectionate and entertaining holiday snack." Kenneth Turan in the Los Angeles Times suggests that the film is likely to find a wide audience: "Fast, light and funny, Galaxy Quest (1999) has a wide, generation-spanning appeal, " he writes, "and you don't have to be a die-hard Trekkie to enjoy it." But Jay Webb in the Dallas Morning News is among a handful of critics who are not amused by the goings-on in the movie. He concludes: "The film is void of any cute aliens or a heroic sense of action and adventure to appeal to childre (us.imdb.com....00244/news)

Although this type of study cannot tell us how empirical cult TV fan cultures constitute and recognise actual subcultural celebrities, it can tell us how subcultural celebrity and cult TV fandom are made meaningful in media texts that are themselves partly aimed at niche, cult TV fan audiences. These are texts expected to be consumed by fans of the type that they represent: Cruise of the Gods, for example, was publicised on the BBC's Cult Television website, (17) whilst Galaxy Quest received coverage in niche magazines target-marketed at cult TV fans such as Starburst (18) as well as on the BBC's Cult website.
