A unusual guest has been making appearances at proms across the nation. The name? Bond, James Bond. The New York Times reports, "Part of the reason is that students share their graduation date with Agent 007s code number. Another influence is the success last fall of Casino Royale . For longtime fans of the franchise, Casino Royale offers some retro kicks. Bond wins his iconic Aston Martin at the gaming table, and when a bartender asks if he wants his martini "shaken or stirred," he disdainfully replies, "Do I look like I give a damn?". There's no Moneypenny or "Q," but Dame Judi Dench is back as the exasperated M who, one senses, admires Bond's "bloody cheek." A Bond film is only as good as its villain, and Mads Mikkelsen as Le Chiffre, who weeps blood, is a sinister dandy. From its punishing violence and virtuoso action sequences to its romance , Casino Royale is a Bond film that, in the words of one character, 'makes you feel it', particularly during an excruciating torture sequence. Double-0s, Bond observes early on, "have a short life expectancy". But with Craig, there is new life in the old franchise yet, as well as genuine anticipation for the next one when, at last, the signature James Bond theme kicks in following the best last line ever in any Bond film. To quote Goldie Hawn in Private Benjamin , "now I know what I've been faking all these years (www.amazon.co.uk....40-2738846)
Both films are opening wide on November 17th. But Hollywood couldn't be pitting two more different films against each other. I'm told the early tracking has just shown up for James Bond vs. The Birds - and they're running neck-and-neck in their box office race. The good news for both pics is that .007 and the penguins have "the highest awareness of any movie this far out since the summer films," one of my box office gurus told me this morning. The tracking shows that Sony/MGM's Casino Royale has a huge male and teen advantage, while Warner Bros.' Happy Feet has the big leg up with Moms and families. Like, duh . The kiddie flick will have a screen advantage: an estimated 3,700 theaters compared to an estimated 3,400 theaters for the spy. Then again, Casino Royale 's adult tickets are full price. On the one hand, the Bond franchise has a built-in audience; on the other, there's a new .007 (Daniel Craig ) with a Bourne -like look that doesn't depend on the gee-whiz gadgetry of yesteryear, and that may put off Bond fans (www.deadlinehollywooddaily.com....-and-neck/)
2 mil foreign. Casino Royale looks like the biggest Bond ever worldwide, passing $224.5 mil this weekend ($128.2 overseas + $94.2 U.S. cume) with many major foreign territories still to go, including Japan, Korea, Italy and Australia . Box office gurus say Daniel Craig will easily blow past Pierce Brosnan 's Die Another Day and its $432 mil previous biggest global take. And my guess is that the spy vs spy news coming out of Britain and Russia will only help Casino Royale 's foreign haul. It also beat back direct action competition from the opening of Deja Vu , that Jerry Bruckheimer prod with Denzel Washington looking especially fine (and fine he is ). Disney / Buena Vista's action-thriller debuted in 3,108 theaters and took 3rd place with $3.6 mil Wed, $4.6 mil Thurs, $ (www.deadlinehollywooddaily.com....ox-office/)
The most successful invigoration of a cinematic franchise since Batman Begins , Casino Royale offers a new Bond identity . Based on the Ian Fleming novel that introduced Agent 007 into a Cold War world, Casino Royale is the most brutal and viscerally exciting James Bond film since Sean Connery left Her Majesty's Secret Service. Meet the new Bond; not the same as the old Bond. Daniel Craig gives a galvanising performance as the freshly minted double-0 agent. Suave, yes, but also a "blunt instrument," reckless and possessed with an ego that compromises his judgment during his first mission to root out the mastermind behind an operation that funds international terrorists. In classic Bond film tradition, his global itinerary takes him to far-flung locales, including Uganda, Madagascar, the Bahamas (that's more like it) and Montenegro , where he is pitted against his nemesis in a poker game, with hundreds of millions in the pot. The stakes get even higher when Bond lets down his armour by falling in love with Vesper (Eva Green ), the ravishing banker's representative fronting him the mone (www.amazon.co.uk....40-2738846)
It started out really bad, I had asked for an upper floor smoking. When I enter the bathroom the tub had this black gunk by the drain. I walked into the sleep area to use the phone and the bed was not made, it was stripped of sheets, everything. I called and went back to the main desk. I did not get a smoking room but the room the desk person gave me was very nice! He was sweet, told me I could move to a smoking room the next day but I told him I will stay in the one he gave me, the room was great. If you have to smoke there are areas on the same floor that have a bench and a big ash can. The cocktail waitresses are not as nice as they used to be. I think I saw their supervisor giving one of them hell , she was sweet to me; not a great thing to do right in front of patrons. I wouldn't be happy working there either if that's how she treats staff. The waitresses I have met in the past two years have been really nice too bad they left Casino Royale . Great place to stay. I felt safe, it is clean and best of all, right in the middle of the stri (las-vegas-hotels.tripadvisor.com....evada.html)
The Mirage is right across the street. Also, the monorail can be accessed very quickly by walking through Harrahâs next door . Very convenient. The room is kept very clean, as was the bathroom. If you are worried about walking on old carpet, wear flip-flops or socks. I even had a phone message waiting from housekeeping one evening when I returned. I had left the do not disturb sign on the door, and they wanted me to know that they would clean my room if I just called them. Great housekeeping service. Also an in-room safe that I really liked. I will stay again in 2008. I can stay for 5 nights at the Casino Royale for what it would cost for 1 night at the Bellagi (las-vegas-hotels.tripadvisor.com....evada.html)
SUNDAY AM: Happy T-Bird weekend, and get out of the way for the mall stampede as shoppers try to score one of the hottest toys this holiday season: Happy Feet 's Baby Mumbles, on sale for $29.99, which tap dances to any type of music playing. Ah, the commercialism of Xmas! A big moviegoing weekend it has been - with the top 3 films estimated to do $160 million from Friday through Sunday, and $220 mil from Wednesday through Sunday. (But that's still -5% from last year because of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire .) Welcome to déjà vu at the box office. On Thanksgiving Day, Bond traded places with the birds to become America's #1 movie after the penguins triumphed on the T-Bird weekend opener. It was a replay of last weekend on Friday, however: Happy Feet waddling past Casino Royale to be the (www.deadlinehollywooddaily.com....ox-office/)
007 so far is doing Da Vinci Code -like biz in all 50 countries where it's opened No. 1 (except the U.S. where it opened No. 2). There were 18 new international debuts for Casino Royale (in Paris theater, at left) this week all #1, including France , Germany , Spain and Scandinavia. So far, that's an overseas total of $66.2 mil from this weekend's haul - the 6th biggest international weekend of 2006. Last week, the spy pic was #1 in all 27 countries where it opened, earning $42.2 mil from the UK, Russia, India and small territories in the Mideast and Asia. (Last week, it scored the #9 all-time UK opening, and the biggest Bond opening ever in the UK by 46%.) Right before the debut weekend, Sony Pictures  was lowering expectations for Casino Roy ale in the U.S. and counting more on foreign sale (www.deadlinehollywooddaily.com....worldwide/)
James Bond is back and he is alive and well. Any questions about Daniel Craig 's worthiness are thrown out almost immediately as we are handed a film filled to the brim with exquisite action and explosive emotion. I squirmed in my seat with delight as I have not done since I was a child. What "Batman Begins" did for that franchise, "Casino Royale " does, and more, for Bond. For a while it seemed that he might not be able to well exist outside the confines of the cold war , but here we are given an entirely modern Bond with enough nods to the original that we can't be too upset. Maybe it's because this is the last novel yet to be filmed in the traditional Bond manner and it is Ian Fleming who has stolen our hearts not this incarnation of the super spy. However I like to think that someone actually just got their act together and concentrated on the film itself as opposed to who they could get the most product placement money out of. Congratulations. James Bond will live on for at least one more generation, and maybe forever (www.amazon.co.uk....40-2738846)
The studio was right: the pic now looks like the biggest Bond ever worldwide, moving up from $82.8 mil last weekend to easily passing $224.5 mil this weekend (including the $128.2 mil foreign and $94.2 mil U.S. cume) with many major foreign territories still to go, including Japan, Korea, Italy and Australia . Box office gurus say Daniel Craig will easily blow past the biggest grosser in the Pierce Brosnan series, 2002's Die Another Day , and its $432 mil global take. Estimate is for Casino Royale to make as much as $575 mil globally. 007 is still #1 its second week out in at least 40 of the 50 territories where it's in play. The $40.4 mil it generated from new openings beat the combined openings of Die Another Day in the same territories ($28 mil) by 44 (www.deadlinehollywooddaily.com....worldwide/)
My husband and I compromised we stayed here for 4 nights and then went to the Venetian for 4 nights. This place actually was exactly what I read and expected. Run of the mill cheap hotel in a SUPERB location. Yes it's used and kind of dirty, but the price cannot be beat. $59-$79 a night. It looks like any room that price nearly anywhere in the U.S. **Warning YES there were prostitutes about (by the security door to get in the hotel area) and they are not modest. NOT a family hotel. Staff was courteous, casino small but kept well, room was cleaned as well as could be. NOTE each time I called for something they were there within minutes (extra pillows, towels, etc.). I even called about our T.V. not working and the guy fixed it within 20 minutes. Our window looked out over their pool not heated, not clean in December, just an F.Y.I. We could also see the Venetian towering above AND heard that huge BONG BONG each morning, on the hour, from the Venetian's Bell Tower (see the pictures I've included here (las-vegas-hotels.tripadvisor.com....evada.html)
Ok, so the only thing good about this hotel was the convience to bigger and nicer hotels! All and All this hotel sucked! It was hot, smelled old, you couldn't really get away from the smoke from the downstairs casino . We were on the 2nd floor. Saw a Roach that fell down in the light fixture! Gross! The comforter was. mor (las-vegas-hotels.tripadvisor.com....evada.html)
