As a big fan of the Flamenco movies of Carlos Saura I was watching 'Carmen ' on DVD this morning and thought," haven't posted at Splendida for a while ." so here is a track from several Flamenco favourites I have stored away. Nothing to do with the movie but thrilling nevertheless ! (splendida.blogspot.com....chive.html)
The Washington Post; 2/13/1987; Rita Kempley; 398 words; DANCE DRAMATIST Carlos Saura concludes his trilogy of flamenco folklorico with the disappointing "El Amor Brujo," an overblown adaptation of a simple Andalusian ghost story . Choreographer Antonio Gades , who collaborated with director Saura on both "Blood Wedding" and "Carmen ," here graces the `El Amor Brujo' tells riveting love story (www.encyclopedia.com....99480.html)
Beginning with his much-loved Flamenco Trilogy and moving on through Tango and Iberia, Carlos Saura has been at the forefront of finding creative ways to blend cinema with music and dance. For his newest film, he headed west to neighboring Portugal for this beautiful celebration of the Portuguese fado. Sometimes thought of as the Portuguese blues, as so many of the songs deal with loneliness and heartache, the fado, like flamenco , remains one of Europe 's hardiest folk cultures; in recent years, fado has fused with everything from African rhythms to rock and hip-hop. Saura presents a broad panorama of fado styles, from the strictly traditional to some rather unexpected variations, and leading us through this musical journey are performers such as Carlos do Carmo, Catarina Moura, Argentina Santos, and Maria da Nazaré, along with guest appearances by Brazilian singers Chico Buarque and Caetano Veloso. Homages are included to such past greats as LucÃlia do Carmo, Alfredo Marceneiro and of course Amália Rodrigues (blogs.nypost.com....s/2007/08/)
This brilliant work by Carlos Saura is a marvel to view.Thelighting of the simple sets is stunning while the performersshow the development and the history of the flamenco .Themusic, the dancing and as said before the lighting of the setsarebreathtaking. An other companion film to watch would be Carmen byCarlosSaura one of my all time favorites. In Flamenco I would have liked to have seen a littlemorepair-dancing (us.imdb.com/title/tt0113077/)
Closely repeating the format of his 1995 music film Flamenco ,Carlos Saura crafts a stylish showcase for the many varieties ofPortuguese fado music. The theatricality of the presentation âperformances take place in a studio amid a variety of settings, mostmemorably a âfado caféâ populated by battling singers and guitarists âsuits the high drama of the songs themselves and the tributes to suchlate fado greats as Amalia Rodrigues have the same elegance asperformances by Mariza and other contemporary stars. The International style was leaded by groups like GATEPAC . Spain is currently experiencing a revolution in contemporary architecture and like Rafael Moneo , Santiago Calatrava , Ricardo Bofill as well as many others have gained worldwide renown. Music of Spain 'Spanish music' is often considered abroad to be synonymous with flamenco , an Andalusian musical genre, which, contrarily to popular belief, is not widespread outside that region. Various regional styles of folk music abound in Aragon , Catalonia and Castile . Pop, rock, hip hop and Heavy Metal are also popular. Cinema of Spain In recent years, Spanish cinema has achieved high marks of recognition as a result of its creative and technical excellence. In the long history of Spanish cinema, the great filmmaker Luis Buñuel was the first to achieve universal recognition, followed by Pedro Almodóvar in the 1980s. Spanish cinema has also seen international success over the years with films by directors like Segundo de Chomón , Florián Rey , Luis GarcÃa Berlanga , Carlos Saura , Julio Medem and Alejandro Amenába (www.tripatlas.com/Spain)
Criterion was nearly passed over in The Los Angeles Times' critics' choices this year. Film critic Kenneth Turan was one of the few who didn't include a single Criterion release in his year-end tally, but dance critic Lewis Segal came to the rescue , singling out not one but two Criterion entries, calling Martha Graham: Dance on Film "a treasure trove" and pointing out that for dance audiences, the draw of the Flamenco Trilogy is not so much Carlos Saura 's direction as "its look at the performances and choreography of the late flamenco icon Antonio Gades .
