Other novels since 1997 which have become best-sellers on the strength of personal recommendations are Captain Corelli's Mandolin, Memoirs Of A Geisha and Mark Haddon's award-winning The Curious Incident Of The Dog In The Night-time. (news.bbc.co.uk....311303.stm)

Kazuo Ishiguro should have been higher than 32nd his bad books are good and his good ones are exceptional and all Louis de Bernieres' books, not just Captain Corelli's Mandolin, are outstanding. Terry Pratchett is also a far better writer than some of those included. (entertainment.timesonline.co.uk....130859.ece)

Cephalonia has other charms as well it was the location for Captain Corelli's Mandolin and some moviegoers think that the island gave the most powerful performance in the film (gogreece.about.com....greece.htm)

Cage, 36, started shooting the movie "Windtalkers " this month. He also stars in "Family Man ," due out in December. "Captain Corelli's Mandolin" finished filming in August. (latimesblogs.latimes.com....big-i.html)

Winner of the Commonwealth Writers Prize in 1995, Captain Corelli's Mandolin follows for sixty years the life of Pelagia and those who love her, beginning in World War II, when she and her father, a doctor on the small Greek island of Cephalonia, first get drawn into the war . Attractive and intelligent, Pelagia thinks herself in love with Mandras, an illiterate Greek fisherman who leaves for war. When the island is overtaken by the ineffectual Italian army, Captain Antonio Corelli is billeted in their small house. Corelli, whose response to "Heil, Hitler" was once "Heil, Puccini," is a musician, a mandolin player, who quickly establishes a singing group (meeting in the company's latrines) in preference to waging war. By the time the wounded Mandras returns, Pelagia and Corelli are in love. (www.amazon.com....9/am841-20)

The theme of music was incorporated into various parts of the story, much to this music enthusiast's delight. The protagonist, Captain Antonio Corelli, plays the mandolin, which he used to charm his lover. The mandolin plays a significant role as the symbol of love between Corelli and Pelagia, and its `reappearance' towards the end of the book led to the reunion of the lovers. Set in the years of World War II in the Greek island of Cephallonia, "Captain Corelli's Mandolin" embodies the usual war themes of sacrifice, savagery, hardship and courage. But its light-hearted touch differentiates it from other books of similar genres. It does not seek to bombard the reader with descriptions of bloodshed or the atrocities of the war . Instead it focuses on fleshing out the characters of the story, effectively allowing the reader to feel for the characters as the story plods on (www.amazon.com....9/am841-20)

* "Captain Corelli's Mandolin": Cheese wasn't limited to popcorn fare this summer . Penelope Cruz and Nicolas Cage sported egregious accents (Italian and Greek, respectively) in this mawkish version of a British best-seller about a World War II romance , directed without distinction by the overrated John Madden ("Shakespeare in Love "). (blogs.nypost.com....s/2007/11/)

It made a rare appearance outside a military context in the Guardian newspaper earlier in 2001, in an interview with Louis de Bernières: “In fact, he has had to put up with so much ‘brainless and trivial embuggerance’ he says, that he has come to regret having written Corelli in the first place”. However, in view of the World War Two setting of Captain Corelli’s Mandolin , even that is hardly outside the services ambit (de Bernières once spent what he calls “four disastrous months” in the British Army; whether he picked up the word there is unknown, but it seems likely) (www.worldwidewo....a-emb1.htm)

Starring Nicolas Cage and Penelope Cruz , this drama is a story about love and war on a small Greek island. A beautiful young Greek woman named Pelagia (Cruz) lives with her father (John Hurt ), the islands physician. As World War II is beginning, she falls in love with a local fisherman named Mandras (Christian Bale ), who leaves to fight the Italians. Soon a small Italian force, headed by Captain Corelli (Cage), arrives to occupy the island. The Italians like to sing opera and hang out at the beach with local prostitutes. Corelli is a skilled mandolin player, and he and Pelagia gradually fall in love. But things change drastically when the Italians surrender to the Allies and Germans take over the occupation of the island. Then Mandras returns to the island, and Pelagia and Corelli must make some important decisions (homevideo.about.com....sfeb02.htm)

De Bernieres says: All my books are about people who would have preferred better lives but this usually doesn't work out. He thought this one would take a year to write. All his other books did. OK, I haven't worked that hard, but the Corelli phenomenon has meant one distraction after another. Captain Corelli's Mandolin was famously a slow burner, dismissed as travel porn by some critics but beloved by millions who embraced it like a friend. The movie with Nicolas Cage as the mandolin-strumming captain didn't do the book any favours but that wasn't de Bernieres's fault. He would have preferred an art-house film. The producers wanted a hit (www141.pair.com....y_2004.htm)

Captain Corelli's Mandolin star Nicolas Cage discovered a real talent for playing the mandolin during filming of the movie. Cage said that he had no musical talent before he became the mandolin-playing star of the movie. But, the man who taught him to play, musical director Paul Englishby, says Cage quickly became an accomplished player. Although the movie soundtrack was recorded by mandolin expert Giovanni Parricelli , Cage was required to play the instrument during the filming. "Cage actually played it and there is lots of footage of him doing that. It was incredible," says Englishby. "He really is very talented. Nicolas used to go away for the weekend. He had a private jet and one weekend he asked me to go to Venice with him so he could have his music lessons." Englishby is now teaching Hugh Grant to play guitar for his latest role in the film version of the Nick Hornby novel About A Boy (us.imdb.com....00424/news)

War or rather, anti-war has also become popular, leading to thechoice of Louis de Bernières' Captain Corelli's Mandolin (which has hadits swansong for AQA, but is still in the reckoning for OCR) andSebastian Faulks's Birdsong (in the A-level canon despite failing towin over the critics). The first world war has long been big at A-leveland is a mandatory topic for AQA candidates. Faulks is safe territorywhere more literary work can be dangerous. Salman Rushdie was onceedging into the classroom, and Midnight's Children was famously votedthe Booker of Bookers, but his fiction now seems far too incendiary aprospec (www.whatalovelywar.co.uk/)

I can't even remember the last time Nicolas Cage was in a movie that actually made money. (Well, in 2004, he did star in that pic National Treasure . The sequel comes out later this year.) That's a career which has been in big, big trouble after back-to-back box office disappointments like  The Wicker Man ,  World Trade Center ,  The Weather Man ,  Lord of War , Matchstick Men , Windtalkers ,  Captain Corelli's Mandolin , and so on. And let's not even mention that huge bomb The Ant Bully which featured his voice work. So before Cage orders a hit on Richard Lovett, I can report that Nic is about to have a modest hit. The movie is Marvel / Sony's Ghost Rider , and my box office gurus tell me it's going to have a good opening of $35+ million for the four-day President's holiday weekend after it was moved off its original summer date. (The trailers look great. On the other hand, money guys tell me the pic cost $150 mil. Ouch .) The big question is what's opening the film: the comic book, or Cage? (I think we all know the answer to that on (www.deadlinehollywooddaily.com....has-a-hit/)
