One thing this hotel house is location only 1 block from Cannery Row , aquarium, etc. The problems we encountered is that this hotel is poorly designed. We were here as part of a long trip down the coast. Therefore, with my husband and 2 kids (8 and 11), we had 2 suitcases and 3 duffels. Kids are old enough. mor (www.tripadvisor.com....ornia.html)
I just got back from six hours walking around Monterey. I spent two hours at the Aquarium, walked along Cannery Row , had lunch at the Bubba Gump Shrimp Company, sent a bunch of postcards, and checked out the Lower Presidio (the public part.) Photos from the day can be found on Ofoto (www.travelinlibrarian.info....chive.html)
Cannery Row , John Steinbeck . Read in high school but had my interest renewed on a trip to Monterey. The characters came to life after visiting places described. The only thing missing was the smell described in the book! (www.owls.lib.wi.us/sey/)
I then went to dinner with Karen Coombs (University of Houston ) and Jason (Montana State University, Bozeman) for some Sushi, a great walk down to Cannery Row , coffee, and some spectacular conversation about conference politics, wikis, blogs, servers, and book writing. I wasn't up as late as I could have been but later than I should have been (www.travelinlibrarian.info....chive.html)

Container houses bring to mind the first remodel I got emotionally involved with, in John Steinbeck 's "Sweet Thursday," the sequel to "Cannery Row ." Do you remember when Suzy, the prostitute, moved into an old boiler in a weedy lot? Here's how Steinbeck describes it (latimesblogs.latimes.com....t/2007/05/)
He started this year with the goal of reading everything by John Steinbeck ("The Grapes of Wrath ,""Cannery Row ,""The Pearl"), who was one of Grisham's favorite authors growing up. And he just finished a "Mark Twain binge. (www.sfgate.com....116S10.DTL)
Steinbeck had just finished The Grapes of Wrath , and Ricketts — immortalized as Doc in Steinbeck's famous book Cannery Row — had just finished his seminal study Between Pacific Tides. After their voyage they co-authored Sea of Cortez, a meticulously detailed study of hundreds of tideland species , spiced with philosophical digressions. (www.npr.org....Id=1903396)
The mid-20th century crash of the sardine fishery off California for decades has vexed marine ecologists searching for the root causes of large fluctuations in the sardine population. Before its collapse, the fishery was one of the worlds most productive and formed the setting of John Steinbecks Cannery Row in Monterey, Calif (physorg.com....42211.html)
Steinbeck writes of Saints and angels and martyrs and holy men, in Cannery Row and you seem to share his affection for people. What have you gotten from your reading of his comic novels (contemporarylit.about.com....eInt_4.htm)
I was pretty much blown away by this book. Unfortunately, I'm coming late to discovering Steinbeck. I read Travels With Charley early on and more recently Tortilla Flat. Of his fictional works Cannery Row has far been my favorite to date (www.amazon.com....8/am841-20)
I will just say this: When I finished reading Cannery Row , I turned the book over and read the description on the back cover, which ends ". Read more (www.amazon.com....8/am841-20)
Is the length of this book the reason that English teachers assign it? I suspect so, but Cannery Row is definitely not a good introduction to Steinbeck. Read mor (www.amazon.com....8/am841-20)
From Jan-Sep 1967 I was stationed at the Presidio of Monterey going to school learning Chinese for the Air Force. On weekends I would wander the marinas, Cannery Row or the beach at Carmel walking up to Pebble Beach Golf Course and back. You brought back some great memories. Wonderful job! (vimeo.com/466667)

Myself and my husband had travelled from San Fran to Yosemite and arrived in Monterey not knowing where to stay we found this hotel on Cannery Row and thought it looked nice. We pulled in after our long haul drive and booked a room for night (www.tripadvisor.com....ornia.html)
We stayed at Lone Oak for one night and found the location to be a short drive to Cannery Row , Fisherman's Wharf and the Aquarium. The room was clean and the beds were comfortable. The staff was helpful and we enjoyed the small whirlpool and sauna as no one else was using the Spa Room at the time. However, no. mor (www.tripadvisor.com....ornia.html)
Comfortable rooms, clean and friendly staff. It is in a great location and easy walking to Fisherman's wharf and Cannery Row . This is is convenient because Cannery Row and Fisherman's Wharf charges for all parking (www.tripadvisor.com....ornia.html)
The Colton Inn is walking distance from shopping and restaurants downtown , but we drove to the Wharf and to Cannery Row because the walk would have taken about 45 minutes in the rain. I would say the location is convenient but further away from the water than I expected (3 miles?) (www.tripadvisor.com....ornia.html)
Our stay here on our vacation was great! It was convenient and very clean. It had a refrigerator and stove which we didn't expect which was great. It is very close to Cannery Row which we liked. They provided us with adjoining rooms that were connected through a door inside the room which was convenient. mor (www.tripadvisor.com....ornia.html)
The Monterey area of Cannery Row is very nice, but is going through some construction as they are building right in front of the Monterey Aquarium and part of Cannery Row is closed to traffic (www.tripadvisor.com....ornia.html)
Carmel Valley Oaks and gracious weeping willows dot the 400 acres upon which this resort is set, less than 2 miles from Chateau Julien Winery; Monterey's Cannery Row is 13 miles away. (www.tripadvisor.com....l_and.html)

I have to disagree with you guys on Big Fish . I find them overpriced. Yes, they have 'fresh' seafood, but the preparations aren't that great, and the menu is limited. I still like Cannery Row old school , I know (www.chowhound.c....ics/109159)
The Grapes of Wrath (1939; Pulitzer Prize), while treating the plight of dispossessed Dust Bowl farmers during the 1930s, presents a universal picture of victims of disaster . Steinbeck's depiction of the westward migration of the Joad family, and their subsequent struggles in the exploitative agricultural industry of California, is realistic and moving, and he endows his humble characters with nobility. Steinbeck's other works are diverse, ranging from the literal account of a voyage, The Sea of Cortez (1941; written with the marine biologist E. F. Ricketts); to a parable, The Pearl (1948); to a playful French folk piece, The Short Reign of Pippin IV (1957). Love of his native land shines through the exquisitely nostalgic story 60;The Red Pony61; in The Long Valley (1938). The somewhat sentimental attitude of Tortilla Flat appears again in Cannery Row (1945), The Wayward Bus (1947), and Sweet Thursday (1954). More ambitious are the novels East of Eden (1952), a family chronicle with the Cain and Abel theme, and Winter of Our Discontent (1961), about a suburbanite's moral conflic (www.infoplease.com....46620.html)

Settled in 1770, Monterey was one of the West Coast's first European outposts, and the capital of California under the Spanish, Mexican, and American flags. California's constitution was drafted here in 1849, paving the way for admission to the Union a year later. In fact, many buildings from the early colonial era still stand. A major whaling center in the 1800s, Monterey eventually became the sardine capital of the Western Hemisphere when the first packing plant was built in 1900. By 1913 the boats were bringing in 25 tons of sardines a night to the 18 canneries. The gritty lives of the mostly working-class residents were captured by local hero John Steinbeck in his 1945 novel Cannery Row (www.orbitz.com....terey.html)
