I was lucky enough to receive an advance copy of this great book. My eight year old daughter and I read Caddie Woodlawn together. We then used Shireen Dodson's very thoughtful discussion questions. The result was a highly satisfying coversation between my daughter and me, and a more memorable reading experience than either of us had imagined possible. This book will inspire mothers and daughters to read books and talk about them, and in the process learn more about themselves and each other. 100 Books for Girls to Grow On is an inspired idea, lovingly executed, and sure to be a hit with mothers and daughters everywhere. Moscow writer Carol Ryrie Brink, who won the prestigious Newbury Award for Caddie Woodlawn , can come to your classroom, in a living history portrayal, to tell the story of growing up around the turn of the 20th century with slides from her family album. She brings with her a suitcase full of vintage clothing and artifacts and has another suitcase full of vintage detachable collars, gloves, bow ties, hats, scarves and hats for the students to try on. A long shot, but is it Caddie Woodlawn ?See Solved Mysteries. The author is Caddie's granddaughter. She'sfriendswith the Indians, but the "princess" element isn't there unless youmeannear he end, when the family has to choose whether to accept anaristocratictitle and go to England, which only the father has ever seen. Also,Caddie'sallowed by her father to have outdoor adventures because she and herbabysister were sickly and her sister had died in infancy, but as a criticpointed out, "(in the 19th century, ultimately) she had to grow up tobea 'proper lady'; there was no other way. But I wonder - and the article doesn't touch on this - if I would want mydaughter, now 7, to read the same books I did. (A friend who forbidsher daughter Barbies says, "I turned out OK playing with them, butI could have been better!") I confess to feeling a nostalgic pleasureas I read her the "Little House" series, but I found myself cringing atthe gender assumptions, the representations of Native Americans, theuncritical embrace of the "pioneer spirit." Same thing, sort of, when Iread her fairy tales, or "Caddie Woodlawn ," or "Anne of Green Gables." Thislast I don't remember reading myself, and I looked forward to it as a"plucky girl" story. But when I read it to my daughter , I was bitterlydisappointed at Anne's increasing "feminization" as the novelprogressed, and on its growing emphasis on the budding romance withGilbert Blythe. A teenage friend tells me not to read the next one inthe series because it's all about Anne with him; I'm taking her advice. (www.salon.com....tters.html)
