The Journey and Ordeal of Cabeza de Vaca : His Account of the Disastrous First European Exploration of the American Southwest by Alvar Nunez Cabeza de Vac (www.amazon.com....racious-20)
I bought this after reading a little about Cabeza de Vaca in another book (Richard Grant's American Nomads -check it out). It was worth reading if you have an interest in these kinds of things: whether its history, exploration, and discovery that interest you, or wandering, roughing it , and exciting stories of survival (www.amazon.com....racious-20)
One of it's most interesting features to me was Cabeza de Vaca 's thinking. By today's standards, he's still a racist, but for his time, he's outrageously sympathetic to the Indians and their ways of life. He tries to see the reasons behind actions that his civilized contemporaries would instantly dismiss as savage. (www.amazon.com....racious-20)

This edition of Álvar Núñez Cabeza de Vaca 57;s Relación offers readers Rolena Adorno and Patrick Charles Pautz's celebrated translation of Cabeza de Vaca 57;s account of the 1527 PÁnfilo de NarvÁez expedition to North America. The dramatic narrative tells the story of some of the first Europeans and the first-known African to encounter the North American wilderness and its Native inhabitants. It is a fascinating tale of survival against the highest odds, and it highlights Native Americans and their interactions with the newcomers in a manner seldom seen in writings of the period (www.amazon.com....racious-20)
In this English-language edition, reproduced from their award-winning three-volume set, Adorno and Pautz supplement the engrossing account with a general introduction that orients the reader to Cabeza de Vaca 57;s world. They also provide explanatory notes, which resolve many of the narrative57;s most perplexing questions. Álvar Núñez Cabeza de Vaca , c.1490-c.1557, Spanish explorer. Cabeza de Vaca [cow's head] was not actually a surname but a hereditary title in his mother's family; he is frequently called simply Álvar Núñez. (www.encyclopedia.com....ezade.html)
After returning to Spain, Cabeza de Vaca was appointed governor of the Río de la Plata region and reached Asunción after an overland journey from the Brazilian coast in 1542. His South American career was sadly different from that in North America. He got into trouble with the popular Domingo Martínez de Irala , and after he returned from a journey up the Paraná River to Bolivia, he was arrested, accused of high-handed practices, imprisoned for two years, and sent back to Spain. There he was found guilty but was pardoned by the king. Cabeza de Vaca wrote his own account of the South American events in his Comentarios (1555) (www.encyclopedia.com....ezade.html)
