When South Africa joined the campaign in 2001 it was the first country outside of Europe to participate. Eight South African beaches were awarded Blue Flag status for the 2002/3 season, including five in the Zulu Kingdom: Margate Main Beach, Ramsgate Beach and Marina Beach near Southbroom on the South Coast; South Beach in Durban, and Willard Beach in Ballito (beaches.kzn.org....ches/6.xml)
A number of other beaches in the Zulu Kingdom wereawarded pilot Blue Flag status for the 2002/2003 season. Pilot status is allocated to beaches that have applied for but have not yet been awarded the coveted Blue Flag. These include Alkantstrand in Richards Bay, Umhlanga Beach (North Coast), and Scottburgh and Hibberdene beaches (South Coast (beaches.kzn.org....ches/6.xml)

For the 2005/6 season, the number of Blue Flag beaches grew yet again. The vacation was fabulous and I must say that in general, Iâm pretty particular and even on the critical side. We went to Beaches Turks and Caicos last year, and although that resort was newer and bigger, we really liked Beaches Negril better. I recently got married at Beaches Negril Resort and Spa and then honeymooned at Sandals Negril Resort and Spa. Beaches was awesome! I highly recommend it! I had a party of 12 who made the trip to our wedding. Everyone had a fabulous time and no one wanted to leave. The staff was so friendly and courteous. Beaches Negril is a good place to take your little ones for a nice beach vacation. There is a lot to do, the food is very good, and the beach is really very nice. The Beaches at 9 Beaches : There are some very beautiful and very private beaches . Walk around the resort and you will see them. The Farm close to 9 Beaches : There is a dairy farm adjacent to the hotel. However, you cannot see or smell the farm from most of the cabanas, and the farm and 9 Beaches are separated by thick bushes. I think with the older kids itâs much better to stay at Beaches Negril if you donât mind spending all that extra bucks. Beaches Sandy Bay really needs to spend money on upgrading if they want to call themselves a âluxuryâ resort (www.tripadvisor.com....maica.html)
