Barbie has had quite a movie career in the 21st Century. First, she starred in the Nutcracker ballet in 2001. Last year, she basked in The Magic of Pegasus . and wandered around in Fairytopia . Earlier this year, she explored Mermaidia (another part of Fairytopia). In between, shes been Rapunzel and The Princess and the Pauper . Today, her latest full-length movie debuts on DVD, Barbie and the 12 Dancing Princesses . You have to hand it to Mattelthe dollmaking possibilities for 12 Princesses are endless! Unfortunately one of his last mole puppet sketches was so sad it broke Kaddi's heart. The mole sees the Barbie doll which played Snowwhite and Rapunzel before, making out with Ken. Obviously love sick he decides to commit suicide on a highway. As if this isn't cruel enough already, Marik lets the mole survive the hit by the first car and makes him change his mind. Being in fear the mole tries panicky to dig away from the coming car, but fails because of the highway asphalt. The adorable little mole is finally driven over by several cars and Marik ends the show leaving the puppet lying at the stage (www.splitbrain.org/)

The worst thing about this video is its cover, which looks stiff,commercialand artificial. What's inside, however, is a very well done original takeona little-dramatized but familiar fairy tale that entertains withoutoverdoing or offending and has an extremely positive subtext. You can tellit's got its heart in the right place, when at the very beginning in anintroductory sequence Barbie, at an easel, encourages her little sister topaint what she wants and express herself rather than telling her what todo.Rapunzel, not immature in this version of the story, though sheltered,alsopaints when she can to pass the time between chores, and unlike Disney'sLittle Mermaid, doesn't feel the need to forego developing her talent andcreativity to chase handsome princes. She discovers and explores her worldwhile always trying, though not usually successfully, to keep peace withherunreasonably demanding and jealous stepmother, whose voice is effectivelyperformed by Angelica Huston, and with feuding royalty in two neighboringkingdo (us.imdb.com/title/tt0313255/)
The impossible-to-dramatize plot elements of the original fairytale have been replaced by effective new characters and story ideas, whichkeep the presentation from being all decoration without substance, andthough Rapunzel's baby dragon friend may be somewhat distractingly big andpurple, her own sub-plot does work into the main story well and addinterestwhen we are introduced to her grown up dragon father, the guardian of thetower. Choices made in good taste are all over this DVD, which isrefreshingly free of Disney-style smartass humor and sell-out scripting.Theoriginal music is nice and very underplayed-Barbie could easily have beenmade to burst into song at any time here, but wisely the producers justletthe perfectly decent story stand on its own instead of trying to make itinto a Broadway musical. The whole package here is pretty, original,pleasantly presented, and encourages self-expression without pandering orbeing heavy handed about its message at all.
