The answer is much simpler than it seems. If she is as bad with money as you say she is she is no doubt carrying a lot of debt. Probably some high interest credit card debt. Pay the debt off first! I guarantee it will yield the best return on investment (asktheexpert.blogs.money.cnn.com....her-money/)

This is a very interesting juncture in the finanacial markets, with equity (stock) markets saying things are a bit rough but ok, and credit markets (bonds) saying we are in big trouble . One of them will be right. The other will see a major correction in the next couple of years. It57;s not so rare for this to happen, but it is rare that the disagreement is this extreme ; it may be worthwhile to put your money in CD57;s for a year or so and wait to see who is correct, especially if your investing horizon is shorter, but if the equity market is right and the credit market wrong, we57;ll see a big run-up in equities you don57;t want to miss. I rode out the 2000-02 crash entirely in equities, never sold out, rebalanced annually, and my long term avg annual rate of return is still 10.6% (that covers my entire investing history, 1994-2007), which isn57;t bad by any measure. Even if I do a weighted avg rate (which will weight the losses of 2000-02 more heavily than the gains of the 199057;s because I had more money invested) I am still at (asktheexpert.blogs.money.cnn.com....n=money_pf)

It used to be that a bad story actually was bad. Now, it's kind of automatically become a way to raise money off the ever-potent force of media loathing. (blogs.trb.com....money.html)

Ironically, all the arguments people are making for why stocks are in for a bad future are *exactly* why stocks outperform bonds on average and will continue to do so. (asktheexpert.blogs.money.cnn.com....n=money_pf)

There57;s another reason bad news indicates you should stay in (or buy more) stocks all of that bad news has already been priced into the market, that57;s why it57;s down lately. Selling based on that can only work if everybody else is wrong about how bad the situation is and if your judgement about that is better than the collective judgement of the professional full-time money managers who dominate the markets, then you should quit your job and become the next Warren Buffet (asktheexpert.blogs.money.cnn.com....n=money_pf)

Finally the truth has come out - we're bad with money because of our brains. Neuroeconomists are finding that people in general are "wired to be stupid with money" according to Money Magazine's Ellen McGirt. I was bad with money because I wanted to buck the system, do things my own way. I thought I found a new way of doing things. Nope. Didn't work out. I had to learn that yes, there is a tried and true way of doing things. When you try to buck the system, you fall flat on your face. Here's the synopsis: (wastrelshow.blogspot.com....riday.html)

Not a bad idea on taxing the campaigns DS. If this really is going to be a Billion dollar campaign shouldn't the Taxpayers get a cut of that? Personally, I don't think Baer was overly concerned the world would know its Cayman branch (allegedly) exists to launder money and avoid taxes. I think the bank didn't want its rich, extremely powerful, allegedly money laundering/tax evading clientele to be exposed. Bad for business, you know (weblog.infoworld.com....money.html)

There are few things that hurt family relations more than bad debts. But the IRS is not ashamed to get involved. In fact, in some cases, it can make life easier for the lender (www.smsmallbiz.com....amily.html)

First, if Uncle Lou turns out to be a deadbeat, you want to be able to claim a "nonbusiness bad-debt deduction." This is treated as a short-term capital loss on your Schedule D. You can claim the deduction simply by showing that the loan is uncollectible. You don't have to file a lawsuit or hire a collection agency. However, you should make a written demand for repayment (again, Broderbund's Family Lawyer supplies a format). When that action goes unrewarded, write yourself another memo for the tax file documenting that you tried and failed to collect your money, and preferably include financial information showing the borrower is insolvent. At this point, if revenge is on your mind, look no further than the IRS. A bad-debt write-off costs the IRS money, and the agency does not give up revenue that easily. For each loss, it reasons, someone, somewhere had a gain, and in this case it would be Uncle Lou. The IRS then seeks to collect tax on his income from "debt forgiveness." So while you may be out a few thousand dollars, you can rest assured that the IRS is seeking to extract at least a few ounces of flesh on your behalf (www.smsmallbiz.com....amily.html)
