There is another element too: Girls, just like boys, need to develop the skills of throwing, catching, kicking in order to enjoy playing later on in team competition. If a kid gets out on the field and her friends know how to do the basic things and she doesn't, she's likely to feel bad, and her enthusiasm will probably be somewhat dampened.
