Second on Babette's Feast my idea of heaven would be a DVD of that with a huge file of outtakes from the cooking scenes.OY! And I have determined that I will serve family and friends Caille en Sarcophage one of these days. Probably sometime after I've gotten really cool with brioch (www.chowhound.c....ics/302328)
Tampopo I liked also, mainly because it was the first food centeredmovie that I had seen. Babette's Feast was great but the ethos it evoked with the oppressive world view of all the dinner gests, except for the one guy who had a great time at the beginning was priceles (www.chowhound.c....ics/302328)
My sister and I actually went to a recreation of Babette's Feast once, at the Ritz Carlton Laguna Niguel. It was one of the most fabulous meals I've ever eaten (www.chowhound.c....ics/410154)

"You know what this list lacks - culinography (i.e., food/cooking porn). I would have preferred Eat Drink Man Woman , maybe, but this one's pretty great too. Babette's Feast is not as good, but it's still the, er, 'hottest' food porn if you catch my drift." (eddieonfilm.blogspot.com....chive.html)

The strength of the show is that the main cast of characters arelikable, even that of Freddy Fisher. As such, you root for thecharacters in whatever situation they may face. Even when there areconflicts between main characters, such as the episode where John thewaiter (Ashley Russell) and Steve the chef (Joe Duttine) are constantlyat each others' throats, you like them both because they are basicallygood people but just different personalities. All the story lines arethe classic good versus bad , and very rarely do characters fit intothat grey area in the middle. Even when guest characters fit into thatgrey area, they are always portrayed in the end as either on the sideof good or bad. The other strength of the show is the food. Much likefood themed movies like Babette's Feast or Eat Drink Man Woman ,there is an obvious love of food by the series creators. Yes, onereally would like to sample Henry, Steve and Gary's (Nicholas Lamont)culinary creations, perhaps with the exception of the episode with theStargazy P (us.imdb.com/title/tt0106102/)

A tribal celebration in a remote vilage in Indonesia that was lit entirely by torches. An elaborate wedding feast in Kerala, India. One momentus evening of restaurant hopping in San Sebastian (Basque country). A meal in a cave that had been turned into a restaurant high up in the cliffs above the Adriatic Sea in Abruzzo, Italy. One particularly meaningful Thanksgiving (a friend was dying) that of all the meals I've ever cooked came the closest to Babette's Feast. (www.chow.com/profile/18222)
Though "The Last Emperor " was the big winner (it swept all nine of its nominations, including best picture), Cher's transparent Bob Mackie gown 52; worn to accept her first Oscar, for "Moonstruck " 52; was the big news at the 60th. Michael Douglas won best actor for "Wall Street "; "I've Had the Time of My Life " from "Dirty Dancing " won best song; and the sweetest speech of the evening came from Danish director Gabriel Axel , who won best foreign language film for "Babette's Feast" and said in his broken English , "In this evening I have learned in the beautiful world of our, everything are possible. Working like the anti-" Babette's Feast ," Peter Greenaway 's brilliant though at times deeply repulsive film will make many never want to eat French food ever again. The story concerns the deviant (and, symbolically, political) happenings at a fine French restaurant in which the gastronomically gifted chef, Richard (Richard Bohringer ), makes elaborately artistic meals while the restaurant 's boorish owner Michael Gambon holds obnoxious court with his abused wife Helen Mirren ). When the wife takes a lover, things, as they say, heat up, but not in any way you have or ever will imagine. Gorgeously shot and costumed and filled with succulent and sickening examples of cuisine, the film's (spoiler alert!) special of the day involves the murdered corpse of the wife's lover served up for her husband to eat. There's many lessons to be learned from this picture, but here's a simple one - don't mistreat the cook (movies.msn.com....ews=242059)
The Danish Film Institute, one of the oldest in Scandinavia, offers daily public screenings of Danish and international movies in their original language and plays an active role in the maintenance and restoration of important archival prints. Over the decades, movie directors like Gabriel Axel (Babette's Feast, 1987 Oscar for Best Foreign Film), Bille August (Buster 's World, 1984; Pelle the Conqueror, 1988 Oscar for Best Foreign Film; The House of the Spirits , 1993) and Lars von Trier (Breaking the Waves , 1996; Dancer in the Dark , 2000 Cannes Golden Palm) have all won international acclaim. In addition, Denmark has been involved virtually from the start in development of the "Dogma film" genre, where small, hand-held digital cameras have permitted greater rapport between director and actor and given a documentary film feel to their increasingly realistic works. Besides von Trier's Dogville (2003) starring Nicole Kidman , and The Idiots (1998), The Celebration (1998 Cannes Special Jury prize) by Thomas Vinterberg , Mifune 's Last Song (1999 Berlin Silver Bear award) by Soeren Kragh-Jacobsen, and Italian for Beginners (2000 Berlin Silver Bear award) by Lone Scherfig all are prime examples of the Dogma concep (www.state.gov....n/3167.htm)
Known as 60;King Karl,61; Karl Lagerfeld may have stolen as many scenes with his silver ponytail, fluttering fan, and infamous temper as he has with his celebrated designs. Lagerfeld won his first fashion competition at the age of fourteen in Paris, joined Balmain in 1959, and became artistic director of Patou in 1962. Throughout the 1960s he was ubiquitous, designing for such prestigious labels as Chloé, Fendi, and Krizia. The movies have been selected according to popularity, critical acclaim, and the importance of directors, actors, and screenwriters. Most of the films are American, but a judicious selection of translated quotes from foreign films is included (Grand Illusion ,The Seventh Seal , Babette's Feast). Most are sound films, though a sampling of titles from silent films is provided (Birth of a Nation, Metropolis , the 1926 Ben-Hur (www.amazon.com..../imdb-shop)

BY CHARLES TAYLOR N o matter how much we'd like to pretend that it's gone away, the notion that foreign films are strange, arty and incomprehensible persists. And dispelling that notion is the best reason I can think of for introducing your kids to foreign films. I don't mean the ones with "uplifting" messages or the prestige snoozers like "Jean de Florette" or "Babette's Feast" - movies that, at any age, are about as much fun as doing your homework. But the ones that can give kids pleasure and make the great foreign movie experiences that await them - "La Grande Illusion" or "The Apu Trilogy" or "The Bicycle Thief " - less daunting on first viewing (www.salon.com....ature.html)
"Babette's Feast," of course. "Eat Drink Man Woman" and its Latino remake - "Tortilla Soup ." "The Cook The Thief , His Wife and Her Lover." "A Walk in the Clouds " (mainly a wine movie). "Big Night ." "Vatel." "Mostly Martha ," which is the original to Catherine Zeta Jones 's "No Reservations." "Dinner Rush ." "The Wedding Feast." And a fabulous Italian one, "The Story of Boys Girls." And we can't leave out John Cleese 's "Fawlty Towers " now can we. Love to hear from other chatters if there is a "can't miss" that we should add to the collection. Thanks (www.washingtonpost.com....25_pf.html)
