Rooney began his career when he was just 18 months old and crawled onto the stage during his father's vaudeville act. Among his credits are such movie classics as "A Midsummer Night's Dream," "Boys Town," "Babes in Arms " and the "Andy Hardy" series (www.nydailynews.com....patri.html)

I lined this one with the same double-sided flannel I'm always raving about, and added store-bought crochet lace to trim it. It's such a cozy little topper, like a tiny quilt for the noggin. Using Miss T to model for me again. She's quite toasty under the pink-bunny doll quilt too. I've still got a few of these mini-quilts left and might get around to putting them back in the shop sometime, but I'm feeling generous today so this one's up for grabs. Just leave a comment and/or share your favorite dance song and I'll toss your name in the bonnet and pick one on Monday. Everyone around here knows I'm a dancing fool, it's also my favorite way to exercise. One of the * coolest mom's * I know shared this song in a recent post mentioning how she embarrassed her daughter by dancing. In contrast, my tween and teen girls jump up and join me when I start acting up! I've been rocking them since they were babes in arms so it just seems natural to them I gue (turkeyfeathers.typepad.com/)

Our second stop is a camp located behind the local mosque, not far from the beach . Our gifts are welcome and we hand out stuffed toys and rubber balls in a gleeful but orderly ceremony. Most of the recipients are very young and there are many babes-in-arms. The baby girls wear beautiful, dangly gold earrings, giving them a look of precocious sophistication. The wisdom of wearing jewelry suddenly seems very clear. Sometimes, the only wealth you can hang on to is what's pierced through your earlobes and fastened around your neck (www.lankalibrar....ws/toy.htm)

Freed repeatedly pressed studio production chief Louis B. Mayer for a chance to produce, and in 1938 he was named associate producer of The Wizard of Oz (1939). He then produced a series of backyard musicals starring Mickey Rooney and Judy Garland , including Babes in Arms (1939), Strike Up the Band (1940), and Girl Crazy (1943). His production of Meet Me in St. Louis (1944) marked a turning point for Freed. It was the first in a string of influential musicals made with the Technicolor process and big-name casts. From 1944 to 1958, when he made Gigi , his name was synonymous with the musical (www.britannica.com....le-9106384)

The Deserted Quay.   When I was in Denmark last year, I looked over some of those old reports, and had more than one melancholy laugh at the account of measures taken for the defence of Ribe at the first assault of the Germans in 1849. That was the year I was born. Ribe, being a border town on the line of the coveted territory, set about arming itself to resist invasion . The citizens built barricades in the streets one of them, with wise forethought, in front of the drug store, in case any one were to faint and stand in need of Hoffman s drops or smelling-salts. The women filled kettles with hot water in the houses flanking an eventual advance. Two hundred pounds of powder were ordered from the next town by foot-post, and a cannon that had stood half buried a hundred years, serving for a hitching-post, was dug up and put into commission. There being a scarcity of guns, the curate of the next village reported arming his host with spears and battle-axes as the next best thing . A rumor of a sudden advance of the enemy sent the mothers with babes in arms scurrying north for safet (www.bartleby.com/207/1.html)

Rodgers and Hart's first professional success was a revue, The Garrick Gaieties (1925), which included the song Manhattan . In 1936 their comedy On Your Toes was produced. This production, with the jazz ballet Slaughter on Tenth Avenue (choreography by George Balanchine), introduced ballet and established serious dance as a permanent part of musical comedy. Among their other collaborations were Babes in Arms (1937), including the songs My Funny Valentine and The Lady Is a Tramp I Married an Angel (1938); and The Boys from Syracuse (1938), adapted from Shakespeare's The Comedy of Errors . Their Pal Joey (1940), adapted by John O'Hara from a series of his short stories, turned away from purely escapist entertainment to serious drama. Too realistic for its time when first produced, it was revived in 1952 with enormous success. Among its songs was Bewitched . Their final collaboration, one year before Hart's death, was By Jupiter (1942) (www.britannica.com....le-9064029)

It ought to be noted that the ENHANCE trial was not the first to question the ultimate importance of LDL cholesterol. Estrogen therapy reduces LDL cholesterol, but at least in some subgroups of postmenopausal women its use significantly increases cardiac risk. Similarly, torcetrapib reduces LDL and increases HDL cholesterol, but in 2006 this projected blockbuster drug was nonetheless shown to result in increased cardiovascular risk, and has now been abandoned. At the very least, doctors have known (or should have known) for some time that the "cholesterol story" we've all been taught since we were babes in arms is not quite as simple and as straightforward as it seemed (heartdisease.about.com/b/)

The Nicholas Brothers appeared in Broadway's Sammy, a specialty concert starring Sammy Davis Jr . in 1974. Fayard appeared in the musical St. Louis Woman in 1946, and the brothers danced the specialty song "All Dark People" in the 1937 musical comedy Babes in Arms , which had racial intolerance as part of its plot. That song is no longer part of the licensed version of the Rodgers and Hart show, and a lyric-less version of it was used in the Encores! concert version that played City Center in 1999. Judy Garland 's performance as Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz (1939) won her a special Oscar and gave her a theme song for the rest of her life: "Somewhere Over the Rainbow." As a teenager Garland appeared in a series of cheerfully fluffy movies with fellow teen star Mickey Rooney , including Love Finds Andy Hardy (1938) and Babes in Arms (1939). In the 1940s she was a song-and-dance star in movies like Meet Me in St. Louis (1944). She married director Vincente Minnelli ; their daughter Liza Minnelli became a star in her own right. (Garland eventually married five times.) In the 1950s Garland began touring as a singer and became famous for her emotional, high-energy live performances. Throughout her last two decades she struggled with addiction to prescription drugs and alcohol, and finally died of an apparent sleeping pill overdose at age 4 (www.infoplease.com....rland.html)

The long awaited sliding glass partition has been installed at Wills Point, AKA "Finger Alley". This area of the layout has been problematic over the years. Some visitors, old enough to know better, as well as some babes in arms could not refrain from touching or in some cases grabbing equipment. In one instance a person "lost" the ice portion of their snow cone on the mainline tracks, during a fair some years ago. Carlo and Carl finished installing the components in what Carlo termed was a "three beer job" on Friday, August 10th. The completion of this project is very much appreciated by the members who enjoy sharing some of their nicer equipment, with other members and our guests during shows. One added benefit of the project was the elimination of the cap rail, which obstructed the view for visitors that were about five feet tall (www.pleasantonmodelrr.org....r2001.html)

So, I'm still thinking about dolls a lot right now, because what's a wee doll quilt without a wee doll? Miss Kitty has been dancing around in my head for sometime now, and I thought it was about time I got her out of my daydreams and onto the dance floor. I made the pattern for this doll many, many years ago, when there were babies in my life , my own, and those belonging to friends, and I was sewing quite a bit, and one day I just started making these crazy little colorful cloth dolls as teething toys. The long arms and legs were easy for tiny hands to hang onto and they could be tossed into the washing machine. They weren't made as fancy as this one, no tutu or flowers or dangling strings obviously, but the faces were embroidered with crazy expressions and they were silly and fun and I made SO many, sold them at craft fairs and gave them to my mother-friends (and their babes) as gifts. I recently ran across the pattern again, I save everything; to my credit and dismay ), and decided to revamp it a bit and this is what I came up wit (turkeyfeathers.typepad.com....s/2007/05/)

For they are continually traversing and infesting with robberies all the forests and mountains lying between the Peucinians and Fennians. Yet they are rather reckoned amongst the Germans, for that they have fixed houses, and carry shields, and prefer travelling on foot, and excel in swiftness. Usages these, all widely differing from those of the Sarmatians, who live on horseback and dwell in waggons. In wonderful savageness live the nation of the Fennians, and in beastly poverty, destitute of arms, of horses, and of homes; their food, the common herbs; their apparel, skins; their bed, the earth; their only hope in their arrows, which for want of iron they point with bones. Their common support they have from the chase , women as well as men; for with these the former wander up and down, and crave a portion of the prey. Nor other shelter have they even for their babes, against the violence of tempests and ravening beasts, than to cover them with the branches of trees twisted together; this a reception for the old men, and hither resort the youn (www.bartleby.com/33/21.html)

Back in the Army, I used to truly dig this girlie cartoon the thoughtful brass produced for us dogfaces. "Ack-Ack Amy" was the name of the character, and the artist I made a point of remembering his name was Bill Ward . Man, could he draw stacked babes! Even on paper Ack-Ack Amy seemed so physical although I doubt there had had ever been any real gal built like her that you could almost feel her in your arms. Especially if it was a lonely night in your foxhole. (www.scifi.com....ippo1.html)

7. Of all evils, indeed, famine is the worst, and it destroys nothing so effectively as shame. For that which under other circumstances is worthy of respect, in the midst of famine is despised. Thus women snatched the food from the very mouths of their husbands and children, from their fathers , and what was most pitiable of all, mothers from their babes. And while their dearest ones were wasting away in their arms, they were not ashamed to take away from them the last drops that supported life (www.newadvent.org....250103.htm)

Woe for me, woe! Again the agony Dread pain that sees the future all too well With ghastly preludes whirls and racks my soul. 1400 Behold ye yonder on the palace roof The spectre-children sitting look, such things As dreams are made on, phantoms as of babes, Horrible shadows , that a kinsman s hand 1404 Hath marked with murder , and their arms as full A rueful burden see, they hold them up, The entrails upon which their father fed! For this, for this, I say there plots revenge 1408 A coward lion, couching in the lair Guarding the gate against my master s foot My master -mine I bear the slave s yoke now, And he, the lord of ships, who trod down Troy, 1412 Knows not the fawning treachery of tongue Of this thing false and dog-like how her speech Glazes and sleeks her purpose, till she win By ill fate s favour the desired chance , 1416 Moving like Ate to a secret end. O aweless soul! the woman slays her lord Woman? what loathsome monster of the earth Were fit comparison? The double snake 1420 Or Scylla, where she dwells, the seaman s bane, Girt round about with rocks? some hag of hell, Raving a truceless curse upon her kin? Hark even now she cries exultingly 1424 The vengeful cry that tells of battle turned How fain, forsooth, to greet her chief restored! Nay, then, believe me not: what skills belief Or disbelief ? Fate works its will and thou 1428 Wilt see and say in ruth, Her tale was tru (www.bartleby.com/8/1/3.html)

Anyway, what with Bret's b*tch-a**-ness lately? (A term I ganked from another favorite reality show. Can you name that other train wreck?) Seriously, he's been acting like a chick, talking smack about all the other girls when they're not around? Am I shocked that he's lacking in class and tact? "Does not love have the smell of fine, fine diamonds ?" There's nothing hot about a dude who talks smack about other chicks. And Daisy? Dude.I don't think I have words. My newborn baby, who is currently cradled in my arms, chose this exact moment to drop a very loud and very offensive, um, deuce, as it were. Well punctuated, Baby Charlotte . From the mouths (butts?) of babes. Nuff said.until next week. : (blogs.nypost.com....f_l_4.html)

and all the while she was employed as night-nurse to Mr. Flint's children. Finally, toiling all day, and being deprived of rest at night, completely brokedown her constitution, and Dr. Flint declared it was impossible she could everbecome the mother of a living child. The fear of losing so valuable a servant bydeath, now induced them to allow her to sleep in her little room in theout-house, except when there was sickness in the family. She afterwards had twofeeble babes, one of whom died in a few days, and the other in four weeks. Iwell remember her patient sorrow as she held the last dead baby in her arms. I wish it could have lived, she said; it is not the will ofGod that any of my children should live. But I will try to be fit to meet theirlittle spirits in heaven (afroamhistory.about.com....pter28.htm)

Less than a thousand ships will end this war, Nor Vulcan needs his fated arms prepare. 185 Let all the Tuscans, all th Arcadians, join! Nor these, nor those, shall frustrate my design. Let them not fear the treasons of the night, The robb d Palladium, the pretended flight: Our onset shall be made in open light. 190 No wooden engine shall their town betray; Fires they shall have around, but fires by day. No Grecian babes before their camp appear, Whom Hector s arms detain d to the tenth tardy year. Now, since the sun is rolling to the west, 195 Give we the silent night to needful rest: Refresh your bodies, and your arms prepare; The morn shall end the small remains of war. The post of honor to Messapus falls, To keep the nightly guard, to watch the walls, 200 To pitch the fires at distances around, And close the Trojans in their scanty ground. Twice seven Rutulian captains ready stand, And twice seven hundred horse these chiefs command; All clad in shining arms the works invest, 205 Each with a radiant helm and waving cre (www.bartleby.com/13/9.html)

They are the grandsons of Queen Elizabeth , sons of Prince Charles and, of course, the late Princess Diana . The world has watched them grow from babes in their mother's arms, to proper English schoolboys, to grief stricken young men walking with their father behind Diana's casket. But they've never done an interview together for an American, never sat down and answered unscripted questions - until now. (www.msnbc.msn.com/id/19190534)

I was doing the swagger initially to impress the babes, and guys, I have to tell you I think it works (previous post explains why I think this).  But it turns out there57;s more to the swagger, a side effect so beneficial it will probably be included in The Secret .  I am not a natural swaggerer, so I have to think about it when I walk.  I have to remember to move my shoulders, right should forward with my right leg, left shoulder forward with the left leg.  The shoulder movement makes me hold my head up, causes my arms to swing more than usual and puts a little extra spring in my step, and the result is, I feel happy when I walk (revision99.com/)

4 Let her see nothing strange no passion or eagerness in thy way of accosting her, whispered Hester. Our Pearl is a fitful and fantastic little elf sometimes. Especially she is generally intolerant of emotion, when she does not fully comprehend the why and wherefore. But the child hath strong affections! She loves me, and will love thee! 5 Thou canst not think, said the minister, glancing aside at Hester Prynne, how my heart dreads this interview , and yearns for it! But, in truth, as I already told thee, children are not readily won to be familiar with me. They will not climb my knee, nor prattle in my ear, nor answer to my smile, but stand apart, and eye me strangely. Even little babes, when I take them in my arms, weep bitterly. Yet Pearl, twice in her little lifetime, hath been kind to me! The first time thou knowest it well! The last was when thou ledst her with thee to the house of yonder stern old Governor. 6 And thou didst plead so bravely in her behalf and mine! answered the mothe (www.bartleby.co..../1/19.html)

Depleted uranium was listed as one of the ten most under-reported news items of 2003. No wonder! The Pentagon has a lot to hide from the American people about depleted uranium! It coats every bomb dropped on Iraqis with depleted uranium (DU). It also coats every humvee and tank that the American soldiers drive with DU. Depleted uranium dust becomes a permanent part of the atmosphere, the soil and the water wherever American bombs fall. That includes Kosovo, Afghanistan and now Iraq. And where that dust has become part of the country, mutant babes are born to the inhabitants some missing arms and legs, some with two heads. Some mutants have even been born to US soldiers after returning from Iraq and Afghanistan. Perhaps they still do not know the reason for their baby's congenital abnormalities. If queried, the Pentagon will deny all knowledge of the effects of DU. Most Iraqis may feel that if they escaped being hit by US bombs they are lucky. In fact, the poison dust of depleted uranium has contaminated their entire countr (www.worldproutassembly.org....d_uranium/)

The childrenlost were Jane Elizabeth and Margaret Meagher ages 6 and 4. They were thechildren of John Meagher and his wife of Lake Loon nearDartmouth. They were lost on 11 April and their bodiesfound on 17 April locked in each other's arms after a search bythousands. Their head stone may yet be seen in the WoodlawnCemetery in Dartmouth.
