Antwerp was one of the main transitports in Europe . Some official reports have come to us, and I have acopy of the one of 1903. I am trying to find the ones that must existfor other years as well. (belgium.rootsweb.com....rp_00.html)

It also states that, towards theend of March, a direct service between Antwerp had been inauguratedby the Canadian Pacific Railway. [Note: the report does clearlysay that this was a direct service, but in the report are onlyindirect passengers listed; since the report was made on 14 April1904, I take it that the Canadian Pacific Railway started theirdirect service in March 1904 only, and not in 1903 (belgium.rootsweb.com....rp_00.html)

From the few references I have, Ican still add to this that people leaving from Antwerp sometimes leftvia Liverpool , and Southampton. The Titanic (1912) had 22 Belgianpassengers on board (belgium.rootsweb.com....rp_00.html)

hi all,any idea of how much less diamonds are in Antwerp compared to Canada/US? Looking for a .7 or 1Ct Princess-cut and here in Canada they are approximately $5000-$6500 US (www.tripadvisor.com....erpen.html)

There isn't that much going on in Antwerp on a Sunday. Shops are closed except for a small area in the city centre, from the Grote Markt via the Hoog Straat to the Kloosterstraat where a lot of antique shops are situated (www.tripadvisor.com....erpen.html)

I agree with Amboselli that perhaps 4 days is a bit long to explore the city of Antwerp . Apart from the suggestions Amboseli made I would also recommend Ghent (also only 50' by train). Also with a medieval background and lots to see and do within walking distance (www.tripadvisor.com....erpen.html)

P.S. I've been to both as well. The best thing about Lille was the restaurants on Rue Gant, for my money, and the bieres de garde. The art gallery was OK too. Antwerp is Lille's superior in every way (www.tripadvisor.com....erpen.html)

We spent 6 days in Antwerp and I have to say the only nice thing about that city was this hotel! The hotel is brand new and state of the art everything! The beds were WONDERFUL and the rooms large and roomy. I would stay there again any day. more (www.tripadvisor.com....erpen.html)

I would highly recommend this Hotel in everyway. Not only because the price was the best I found but for the quality aswell. I was so suprised to find how big the rooms were and so clean and fresh which is a quality I value most important and all this in the heart of Antwerp .The hotel staff were friendly. more (www.tripadvisor.com....erpen.html)

as my preferred hotel in Antwerp was fully booked I tried this hotel for 2 nights.First I had to stay in a smoker rooms even though I requested a non-smoker one. The smell was aweful. They use some kind of spray to neutralize the smell of cigarettes. I don't know what's worse. Seconds in a non-smoker room was better. more (www.tripadvisor.com....erpen.html)

This was the second time that I have stayed in this part of Antwerp . Having paid more than last time and was expecting something better but was disappointed. I would rate the hotel as a 2 star not a 3. The room was a bit shabby and in need of some work. The carpets throughout the hotel were dirty and. mor (www.tripadvisor.com....erpen.html)

We have just returned from one night at Huis 't Schaep in Antwerp , Belgium . We only stayed one night on the way back to the UK from our holiday in the Netherlands . This hotel is in a great location in the center of town and very walkable area. The lobby is attractive and the staff was friendly. The rooms here are decent and clean, but very bland.they are very typical Hilton hotel rooms, nothing special about them.If i was in Antwerp again, i might stay here again but i might not. more (www.tripadvisor.com....erpen.html)

We picked this hotel because it looked different a mixture of old Antwerp and modern. The website photos were accurate the courtyard is charming and I wish we'd been there in the summer ! This is the hip neighbourhood in Antwerp .Lots of very nice restaurants, ranging from the Funky Soul Potato to Bar Italia to the Chili Club. Bars are also plentiful and are definitely worth a visit (www.tripadvisor.ie....erpen.html)

I traveled for the first time to Antwerp and received a recommendation for Hotel Matelote from a co-worker. It was terrific. It was centrally located and within walking distance of a variety of restaurants and the shopping districts. It was quiet and comfortable and the rooms were spacious. Almost felt like home! The innkeeper was also very accommodating helping to. mor (www.tripadvisor.com....erpen.html)

The Hotel Residence in Antwerp is a reasonable hotel. It has a pleasant enough lobby area, but fairly hard seats. The lifts are rather old and slow. The rooms are very spacious and quite clean, and the beds are fine. Some of the pillows are not as soft as others so are quite lumpy. The breakfast was an extreme . mor (www.tripadvisor.com....erpen.html)

I have stayed for both long and medium periods at the Zeemanshuis as I have worked in the Antwerp /Gent area on and off for several years as an engineering contractor in the car plants. Antwerp is situated in Flanders on the banks of the River Schelde and is the region's principle city. Antwerp is also acknowledged as the world's leading centre for the diamond trade (www.usatoday.com....ntwerp.htm)

The Town Hall (Stadhuis) overlooks this large market square. The Grote Markt is the heart of the old town Antwerp and has a wonderful fountain in its center that depicts the legend of Antwerp 's founding. The square and surrounding market and streets are full of fascinating shops and outdoor cafes. Old town Antwerp is a great place to spend a summer afternoon. (cruises.about.com....ntwerp.htm)

If you know what the words Neuhaus, Godiva, Leonidas, Wittamer, and Nihoul have in common, you are probably a chocoholic. If you are a chocoholic, you will love Antwerp . If you have trouble making a decision, just wait until you enter a chocolate shop and have to select among the wide variety of pralines (filled chocolates). (cruises.about.com....ntwerp.htm)

About a hundred years ago, the rich and famous of Antwerp went wild and began trying to out-do each other in this residential neighborhood. The result is an eclectic blend of Art Nouveau, baroque, neo-classical, and neo-Renaissance architecture. No zoning here! (cruises.about.com....ntwerp.htm)

I went to Antwerp a couple of times to choose a diamond as a present to myself back 2004, and briefly explored Antwerp while I was there. There was building work all over the place due to building of the tram system. The trips were ok, but not memorable. It reminded me of Brussels a bit dull (www.tripadvisor.com....alais.html)

Some sources claim that a passengerwould have to spend 18 days in Antwerp before leaving, I cannot butguess that the travel agent did have an agreement with an Antwerp hotel. Business as usual? There were some formalities to cope with, but as far as I understood, they would never take more than a coupleof days. It is a well known fact however that the Antwerp economy wasthriving in those times. I wish we could start over the entirething (belgium.rootsweb.com....rp_00.html)

Mr. Peter and I went with Ryanair to Brussels and got the train to Antwerp . We purchased from Paul in Orsinis. http //ww.diamond-antwerp .com/pages/sitemap.html We made a hudge saving and had a nice city break at the same time. And if they don't have the size, quality, colour, shape that you want, they can get it for you, which is what we did. We just flew Ryanair back a week later to collect it. We didn't even have to fly back to collect it if we didn't want to, they would have fedexed it to us under insurance but we preferred to go back ourselves. You will definitely get better value for your money in Antwerp . We got a further reduction on the price of the ring if we paid cash. It's win, win (www.tripadvisor.com....erpen.html)

Antwerp benefits from an excellent transport infrastructure and ideal location. It is just 45 kilometers (28 miles) from Brussels , while Amsterdam , Düsseldorf, Cologne, Luxembourg, London , Strasbourg, and Paris are all under 500 kilometers (310 miles) away. The city is within easy reach of numerous motorways via which it is connected to the rest of Europe . One motorway heads south-east towards Luxembourg, Metz, and Switzerland , while a further two go southward to the north of France and Paris. There are also two that go to the Netherlands and another two that head east towards the Ruhr area and Saar Rhine Land. There are two main train stations in Antwerp , both of which have services to and from international destinations. The TGV can be taken to Paris and Amsterdam and Brussels can be reached in approximately half an hour (www.usatoday.com....ntwerp.htm)

Lively Antwerp is a hidden gem. Its medieval streets, Renaissance monuments and vibrant nightlife tend to be overshadowed by its reputation as center of the diamond trade and as the world's fifth-largest port. Biking is a popular choice for getting around this stylish Flemish city. See thousands of Old Masters at the Royal Museum and Rubens House. Experience the bustle of life at the Grote Markt. Marvel at the art and architecture of the still unfinished Cathedral of Our Lady, started in 1351. (www.tripadvisor.com....tions.html)
