The diocese of Quebec was founded by Letters Parent in 1793. Before that it was part of the Diocese of Nova Scotia. As the second oldest diocese in Canada its territory originally included all the lands from the New Brunswick border to Manitoba. Over the years its size grew smaller as the population of the Canadian colonies grew and new dioceses were formed. The diocese took it present shape in 1850 with the carving off of what is now the diocese of Montreal . Since 1850 the territory is the central and eastern parts of the province of Quebec . That is west to east from Magog to the Gaspe and the Magdalen Islands, south to north from the United States border to Kawawachikamach and the communities of the Lower North Shore. On Friday afternoon, January 18th 2008, Dennis Drainville was ordained and consecrated as the Coadjutor Bishop of Quebec . He will serve in that office until the retirement of Archbishop Bruce Stavert, Metropolitan of Canada, in the spring of 2009.
