CONTENTS · INDEX · GUIDE · BIBLIOGRAPHIC RECORD The Columbia Encyclopedia, Sixth Edition. 2001-07. Smith, Sydney 1771 1845, English clergyman, writer, and wit, ordained in the Church of England in 1794. In 1798 he went as a tutor to Edinburgh, where he studied medicine, occasionally preached, and with Jeffrey and others founded (1802) the Edinburgh Review. His brilliant contributions were a strong factor in the periodical s success. Moving to London in 1803, Smith lectured on moral philosophy at the Royal Institution and became a well-known figure in literary society. His Peter Plymley letters (published anonymously in 1807 8) in defense of Catholic Emancipation were the first of his many appeals for religious toleration. In 1809 he moved to Yorkshire, where he had been given a living of £500 a year. There he also acted as magistrate and village doctor. He went to a parish in Somerset in 1829; in 1831 he was given a residentiary canonry at St. Paul s. Smith s religion was strong and of a practical nature (www.bartleby.com....th-Sy.html)

Peter was ordained a High Priest on 7 August 1842 in Nauvoo, Illinois, however, there is no record of who ordained him. Following the martyrdom of Joseph Smith, the prophet and president of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints the Latter-day Saints were expelled from the State of Illinois and made their way across the plains to the valley of the Great Salt Lake. When the Saints left Nauvoo in 1846, Peter, then seventy-six years old, and Susannah sixty-seven, made the arduous journey to Salt Lake City with their son, David, where they remained under his care until their deaths. Susannah died on 11 November 1856 at age 73. Peter died on 6 January 1857 at age 83. They are both buried in the David Fullmer plot in the Salt Lake City cemetery (www.geocities.com....Fulmer.htm)

* Peter HONOREE married Elizabeth SMITH in 1792 at Canterbury For the Scenario above to be applicable to us, Peter who married Elizabeth Smith would have to be the child of Mary Honoree. This would explain why he used both names at different times in Australia . Peter Oonery alias Brown was tried in the Assizes Court in Chelmsford, Essex, England, on the 5th March, 1800. His crime is unknown at this time, but being tried at Assizes instead of at Quarter Session indicates that it was of a more serious nature that most. He was found Guilty and sentenced to Transportation for 7 years, this indicates that his crime was not serious enough to warrant a Life Sentence. The fact that Peter had an Alias in England lends itself to the possibility he had committed crimes before, or at least had some reason for wanting to keep his true identity secret (even from his descendants!). . NEW INFORMATION THAT HAS BEEN DISCOVERED REGARDING THE TRIAL OF PETER . (www.geocities.com....onery.html)

Let me here mention that the nineteen pine lots bought by my father for Peter Smith , were some twelve years after traded off by Gerrit Smith for a farm in New York State to a man by the name of Pack. On my way up to explore for pine for the Rusts on Elk Creek in June 1849, this Pack with his wife and three small boys (George W., Albert and Green) were then living in a log house in a small new clearing made by Pack and his elder son, G. W., located a little below the forks of Black River and Elk Creek, a mile or two from the nineteen lots looked up and bought by my father for Peter Smith in 1836. In a few years the Packs lumbered the tract, the proceeds making the whole Pack family wealthy. Tw (freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com....raphy.html)
