The Peter Gunn Show was an innovator in the classic american private eye genre in that the main character (Craig Stevens ) was displayed as a sophisticated and cool private eye known for his 'hip' dressing and love for jazz. He worked with his police detective pal (Herschel Bernardi) and jazz singing girlfriend (Lola Albright) solving weekly crimes. The show ran from 1958 until 1961 and was known for its popular jazz themes as well as the character's abilities to solve weekly crimes. A lot of the jazz tracks that were introduced on the series are still popular today. (cinema.lycos.com/title/37755)

Later years: Eddy's style was destined to become dated, although he continued to record through the early Seventies, often cited as an early influence by George Harrison and John Fogerty, among others. In 1986, a career revival came from a very unlikely place; British synth-poppers Art of Noise duetted with him on a remake of his famous Peter Gunn theme, garnering him a surprise international hit and a Grammy for Best Instrumental performance. Eddy continues to perform and record today; in 2004, Gibson introduced a signature Duane Eddy mode (oldies.about.com....needdy.htm)

Shelly Manne & His Men Play PETER GUNN . Music by Henry Mancini from the TV program starring Craig Stevens . Contemporary Records. Shelly Manne (drums); Victor Feldman, Conte Candoli, Herb Geller, Russ Freeman, Monty Budwig. Recorded in January 1959. Manne and his West Coast jazz band interpret a selection of Henry Mancini-composed themes from the popular late-1950s TV show PETER GUNN , including the title track and a variety of atmospheric interludes. Cuts include 60;A Profound Gass61; and 60;Sorta Blue,61; 60;Soft Sounds61; and the shimmering 60;The Brothers61; (lpcoverlover.co....gory/jazz/)

For the most part, television music was a vast jazz wasteland before the Peter Gunn series debuted in the fall of 1958. The show57;s score made a name for composer Henry Mancini and changed the sound of televised drama. It was inevitable that Shelly Manne, Hollywood studio mainstay and a proven champion at jazz interpretations of Broadway shows (e.g., 60;My Fair Lady61; also on Contemporary), would give Mancini57;s music a more expansive blowing treatment, and the resulting album reminds us that there was more to Peter Gunn than its dramatic theme and the classic ballad 60;Dreamsville.61; Fans of Manne57;s Men should note that the album was taped during the brief tenure of alto saxophonist Herb Geller, and that it makes winning use of the vibes and marimba of added starter Victor Feldma (lpcoverlover.co....gory/jazz/)

I've been working on this for awhile, but it's finally finished: Go here to listen to my Finetune mix of TV theme songs. I included everything from retro hits Peter Gunn , The Monkees to '80s favorites Miami Vice , 227 to current stuff, like the Pet Shop Boys ' Opportunities (Let's Make Lots of Money) from Beauty and the Geek and The OC 's beloved California . The Nothing were a New York band no one seems to remember much about. Lead singer Trixz Sly (my 60;research61; only brought up this mysterious 1980s record) can be seen hanging out as an extra in Abel Ferrara57;s Driller Killer (1979). He57;s wearing his white biker jacket in the room where Tony Coca-Cola & the Roosters are lurching through their upteenth vamp on the 60;Peter Gunn Theme.61; (That movie is one of the particular depictions of bombed-out 1970s NYC that tempted me into moving there in 1986. The DVD is worth watching for the mumbling, half-asleep junkie audio commentary by Ferrara. (toestubber.com....e/2006/06/)

The reason for the reunion: 165 Boone segs will be DVD'd this September by Liberation Entertainment. Chairman Jay Boberg and Vice-Chairman Irv Holender also plan to distrib the popular 20th-Fox series in France , Italy, Portugal , and Spain. They've completely redigitalized the shows and plan to re-air them as well - plus other series including Peter Gunn and Robin Hood (www.armyarcherd.com/2006/06/)

Needing to swing a bit, I venture into the pink the Pink Panther , that is, with The Ultimate Pink Panther (BMG Heritage, $18.98 SRP), which features selections of Henry Mancini's Panther scores from across the entire film series, including the legendary "Pink Panther Theme." Not wanting to leave Mancini territory just yet, I also spin Midnight, Moonlight & Magic: The Very Best of Henry Mancini (BMG Heritage, $18.98 SRP). Mancini's scores are legendary, and having a disc that includes his "Peter Gunn Theme" and "Baby Elephant Walk" (the unofficial theme of IGN FilmForce) is priceles (movies.ign.com....439p1.html)

UPDATE: La Cieca has heard from more than one reliable source that Juan Diego FlĂłrez is yet another victim of whatever it is that's mowing down all the Almavivas. The tenor, she hears, has canceled Barbiere di Siviglia at Lyric Opera of Chicago . Word on the street is that John Osborn will be released from L'elisir d'amore at Palm Beach so he may sing the Rossini in Chicago , with performances beginning February 11 opposite Joyce DiDonato and Nathan Gunn . LOC subscribers (already reeling over having Angela Gheorghiu, Barbara Frittoli, Dimitri Hvorostovsky, Peter Mattei, Bernadette Manca di Nissa and Ambrogio Maestri yoinked from this season's roster) should gird themselves for a belated press release sometime today (parterre.com....ustry.html)
