R.J. Andersonās opinion: (R.J. is a columnist for DRaysBay, Beyond the Boxscore and author of a soon-to-be released book about LaMarās tenure in Tampa. He was kind enough to send along his thoughts): Of the few things Chuck LaMar did right during his time in Tampa drafting was one of them. Although at times LaMar would go against his scoutsā pleas to draft certain players ā selecting Jason Pruett over Albert Pujols for example ā he usually produced at least a handful of players who would reach the majors in some capacity. The negative rep about LaMar comes from his personnel decisions after he drafted the players. Perhaps the best indication of LaMarās skill at selecting amateur players would be the 2004 draft where he selected current top prospects like Jeff Niemann, Reid Brignac, Wade Davis, Jake McGee, Ryan Royster, Fernando Perez, and Andrew Sonnanstine. He probably should never get another general manager job, but if thereās a position heās suited for Scouting Director would be just tha (www.beerleaguer.com....r/2007/10/)

One thing you quickly find out in 2K8 is that playing in franchise mode is not the ideal way to earn cards, given that sticking with your favorite team will let you build up a roster only of that team's players. If you want to get more cards for other players in the league, you're going to need to be playing with a bunch of different major-league teams. In addition, you can't earn cards when simulating or managing a game (which, we'll admit, we like to do for a good portion of our nondivision games in franchise mode). It makes sense that you can't earn the best cards without actually playing the games yourself, but it would be nice to see you get some sort of recognition of effort for at least managing your team through a victory (www.gamespot.com....id=6186559)

p No other professional sports draft is more of a crapshoot than the baseball draft. While NFL and NBA teams can look at college production, many of the best players are high school players who haven&t faced any high-level pitching or hitting. Teams are looking at potential down the line. /p p Sometimes it works, such as with the 10 players below, and sometimes it doesn&t. Only two players (Steve Chilcott, the top pick in 1966 by the Mets, and Brien Taylor, the top pick in 1991 by the Yankees,) never made it to the majors. p Ranking the top 10 top overall draft picks, based on past production and future potential: /p (baseball.about.com....istory.htm)
