AP reports that limousine leftists have been donating their pocket change to Franken's political action committee. The contributions tend to be small, considering the absurd wealth of the donors. Larry Hagman gave $555; Barbra Streisand could part with only $500. But the money's adding up. So far Franken has raised $500,000 (www.moonbattery.com....s/2006/07/)
There was a good long period there where the horror genre was replete with longhairs getting devoured, slashed, and evisceratedâto a degree that both chimes with and illuminates non-horror movies of the period such as Easy Rider and Joe , which also end with freaks getting offed. Children , whose acting troupe is even more annoying than the talking mimes in Easy Rider , obviously savors its holocaust of flower children, particularly because they've brought it on the themselves by scoffing at the taboos of their elders. Factor in hippie horror classics like I Drink Your Blood , the Larry Hagman -directed Son of Blob , the Robert Quarry vehicle Deathmaster , and several episodes of Kolchak: The Night Stalker , and you've got the makings of a film festival. Although the Volt will likely look a lot different when it hits the market, the prototype is kind of cool looking. It's fairly roomy. The only complaint at the conference came from TV star Larry Hagman , who didn't like the transparent plastic roof."You will fry in California," Hagman said. (www.news.com....tag=cd.hed)
On our ride, I was following Fonda, who was the perfect gentleman rider, taking his hand off the left grip to alert me to every stray rock in the road. He does the same thing when riding with the Uglies, a.k.a. the Ugly Motorcycle Club, which he's belonged to since the early '90s. Larry Hagman and former Sen. Ben Nighthorse Campbell (R-Colo.) are also members of the club, which lives by two contradictory credos: (1) There are no rules and (2) you must make two mandatory U-turns each wee (www.latimes.com....9314.story)

The only daughter of Bing Crosby , Mary Crosby is even more famous for portraying Kristin Shepard on the television soap opera Dallas . Crosby was an early bloomer who began an acting career in her teens. By the time she was 20 she was a regular character on Dallas , one of the most popular shows on television. Crosby's character was engaged in an affair with the show's popular villain, J.R. (played by Larry Hagman ), and ended up being the answer to the question that gripped TV viewers in 1980: "Who shot J.R.?" Since then she has appeared in various television and film productions, including The Ice Pirates (1984), Tapeheads (1988, with John Cusack and the documentary Dallas : Return to Southfork (2004) (www.infoplease.com....rosby.html)

But the reason Children stays with me, and the point of this post, is that it is possibly the greatest example of the anti-hippie horror film. There was a good long period there where the horror genre was replete with longhairs getting devoured, slashed, and eviscerated to a degree that both chimes with and illuminates non-horror movies of the period such as Easy Rider and Joe , which also end with freaks getting offed. Her claim to fame, she laughed, was playing the role of Kristen, the one who shot J.R. in Dallas . Larry Hagman was at the Friars with wife Maj. Also on hand as part of Kathryn and Bing's history was A.C. Lyles and wife Martha . He'd known Kathryn since her arrival at Paramount in 1953, the year I also met her, and the year I started writing my column for Daily Variety. Bing and Kathryn gave me countless opportunities for items. (www.armyarcherd.com/2006/04/)
The mercury was hitting the 108-degree mark as Ed Begley Jr . drove his fuel-saving Prius into Palm Desert. The environmentally savvy Begley was there to sample the new Green Switch system. He explained to me how it saves energy when you don't need it-like when you're out of the house-hit the Green Switch and all the non-essential, constantly runinng items shut down. He's sold on it and will further demonstate on his TV'er, Living With Ed's series, Aug.27. Last week Larry Hagman guested on the show and talked his all-solar-powered home. We'll see it on a September seg. (www.armyarcherd.com/2007/07/)
It was at one of several parties at actor Larry "J.R." Hagman's Malibu beach house during the heyday of "Dallas " when the Hagmans' septic system backed up and the potties stopped working. We were welcome to use the bathroom of his next-door neighbor. That turned out to be Burgess Meredith (of "Rocky" fame), who met each of us at the door with a drin (seattlepi.nwsource.com....ynt31.html)
We tried to imagine what would have happened to Elvis had he not died 20 years ago, and agreed on the following. After a continuing downward trend of pill abuse and obesity, Elvis would have finally hit the breaking point when his fiancée, Ginger Alden, ran off with someone like Larry Hagman or a straight version of Wayne Newton . He would have found a health guru and, following a well-publicized blood-laundering in the Betty Ford Center (where he would have been visited and supported by all those politicians' wives with the same problem - Kitty Dukakis, etc.), he would have embarked on a strict fitness and diet plan with a zeal unseen in him since the '50s, including an all-new fealty toward a headstrong Baptist Jesus, which would force him to loudly renounce his entire '70s persona. The plot and acting was very second rate. The only time Burl Ives realisedhis true acting talents, was just before the end when he had an emotionalman to man talk with Ensign Pulver. This was close to his best whenplayingBid Daddy in Cat On A Hot Tin Roof .An interesting notable came out when reviewing the cast of the movie. BurlIves was a noted actor back then in 1964 and his co-lead Robert Walker wasnot really heard of. He never went on to become a household name. Otheractors in the movie who were absolute nobody's back in 1964 were WalterMatthau (Doc), Larry Hagman who played Billings, and Jack Nicholson whoplayed Dolan. Their faces were instantly recognisable and some 40 yearslater, these actors are now household names. Surely it can't have been themaking of this movie who hurtled these three actors intostardom. My advice is if you are feeling sick and this movie is rerun, don't watchitas it will make you sicker. 2/10 max (www.imdb.com/title/tt0058060/)
It is more than likely that most soap operas are watched by housewives, even after all these years and changes in the medium. But for most ofit's existence, The Edge of Night was an exception to that rule. Itwas always near the top of the ratings for afternoon shows, from 1956to 1970, when CBS showed it at 4:30 pm. Sadly, when CBS shuffled theirdaytime lineup, in the 1970 71 season, The Edge of Night was shownearlier and lost ground. The show was a murder mystery serial and wasgreat at showing the inner workings of both crime organizations as wellas showing the inner workings of both the police and the courtroom. Ithad some really great names going through it's door, as alumni, including Dixie Carter , Larry Hagman and even John Travolta as adelivery man. The show was edgy, just as the name applied, and had agreat ability to show whodunits. Actress Talluhah Bankhead was an earlyfan of the show and not even a call from President Harry Truman couldget her away from the show. It even had the balls to kill off a reallypopular character, Sara Karr very early (us.imdb.com/title/tt0048860/)
Fonda directs his actors in an understated, low-key, highly naturalisticstyle; Warren Oates was never warmer or more at ease seeming on camera.Itis good to see him relaxed and even jovial. His character is genuinelydisturbed when forced to shoot in self defense a menacing drunk takingshotsat him. Larry Hagman even gives a good performance here in an uncreditedrole as a town sheriff, caught in an awkward spot when peace in thecommunity demands he ask Oates to leave his jurisdiction. The off-beatcomedian and actor Severn Darden (memorable from THE PRESIDENT'S ANALYST,1966) appears here in an uncharacteristic role as a malignant villain.Bruce Langhorne's music is among the most haunting anywhere in film. Itwill stay with you (us.imdb.com/title/tt0067204/)

So there we were introduced to the Ewing&s who were in a bitter feudwith the Barnes. However it was the biggest mismatch since GeorgeForeman pounded Joe Frazier into the canvas 6 times in two rounds inthe 1973 heavyweight title fight. The Ewing&s led by JR body-slammedCliff Barnes around for the first two seasons. In reality it was not afair contest, a multimillion dollar family with connections up againsta small town lawyer were always going to come out on top! However, thatwas to change as the series progressed. Of course the show quicklycentered on JR (played by Larry Hagman ) and the writers created acharacter that people would really hate; he had no problem playing fastand lose with other peoples lives (us.imdb.com/title/tt0077000/)
Many would say that the golden years of Dallas were the 1978-82seasons. That&s probably true, all the characters were developedthrough those seasons and I think Dallas had it&s highest ratings. However my personal favorites were the 1987-1990 (the last series waspoor)! In 1986 with the series tottering on the edge , the writers tooka chance and despite ridicule brought back the character Bobby bymaking the previous season all a dream. It was a risk but theyresuscitated a series by binning the most boring and tired lookingseason in 1985/86 (and that&s according to Larry Hagman too) as neverhappening and therefore having a fresh start to the series (us.imdb.com/title/tt0077000/)
My descriptions can only hint at the level of incompetence theseshows reached. Not simply the incompetence of the productioncompanies, but of the networks, for agreeing to let these thingsget to the pilot stage. In the wake of "Laugh-In" Arte Johnsontried to play a "man of a thousand faces" detective, provinginstead how limited a range he really had as a character actor. After "I Dream of Jeannie" and before "Dallas ," Larry Hagman playedin a sitcom parody of "Mission: Impossible" in which he and abubble-headed bleach-blonde kept repeating that all the people whothey shot were only hit with "narco-darts." Sure, like that wouldmake a difference to a tranquilized man falling off a building.Hagman proved he made a better straight man than a comic actor, except he turned out to be hilarious when he tried to be a straightacto (letters.salon.com....ndex7.html)
While it might be classified as light drama by today's standards, this isnoordinary movie. A most intriguing story of four rookie cops who defyauthority and help out the family of a deceased cop just short of hispension, (Larry Hagman ) and even the Sergeant who stands in their way.(Robert Cult) It might appear low budget and a little dated, but thevalueshave not aged. It is probably something which is rare for a group ofpoliceman, but you never know. There are still a few good cops out there, and this is their story. Don't expect a swish soundtrack (It's even worsethan 'The Six Million Dollar Man') or dazzling special effects , and youwillwalk away from a viewing of The Last of the good guys feeling a littlebetter about yourself and your so called enemies. You can find a friend inthe most unexpected places.even an old 1970's 'B' grademovie! (us.imdb.com/title/tt0077839/)
Feeble off-road racing action pic that raises a flicker of interest due tothe presence of a young Susan Sarandon (who is given very little to do)andJoe Don Baker in his brief early career as a leading man . Joe Don stars as Walkaway Madden, a hard-core racer whose crash or win attitude bringshim into conflict with his fellow racers. Sarandon is a journalist in theGeorge Plimpton mode, out to get the inside view of a 1000-mile race heldinthe Philippines. Larry Hagman also features, in a bold casting againsttype,as a fast talking wheeler-dealing Southern entrepreneur who runs therace (us.imdb.com/title/tt0075831/)
For more than a year it's been a constant will-they-or-won't-they tug o' war over the making of the big-screen Dallas . First the city, including the mayor, begged producers to shoot J.R. in Dallas , since, at the time, there wasn't any official state dough in it for the studio. Then directors and screenwriters changed . Then the cast flipped and flopped. And then came word only a few days ago that the movie was dead - again . And the source on the latest rumors of the movie's demise was none other than Larry Hagman hisself, who told Dutch TV earlier this week that he'd been told it was adiosed for good , Makes sense: New Regency, who was making the movie, no longer features it as a coming attraction (blogs.dallasobserver.com....he_dallas/)

But a J.R. takeover may not be so easy. Sue Ellen has become a shrewd businesswoman with a killer instinct , who wants to bring Carter McKay (George Kennedy )-and his secret reserves-to Ewing Oil. After a successful acting career on Broadway and in films such as Hitchcock's Vertigo , Barbara Bel Geddes won her greatest fame in her fifties as Miss Ellie Ewing, the matriarch of the Ewing family of Southfork Ranch, in Dallas , the glossy American soap opera about a rich and powerful Texas oil family who would do anything to seize money and power. The pilot show went over well, and featured fellow mega-stars Cher, BeaArthur, Jack Palance , Larry Hagman , Doc Severison of course MadgeAllsop. The Dame asks The Ultimate Diva, Cher, if men had been adisappointment to her. On the odd night, was her hilarious reply. Thehumor was of that nature, always risqué, fresh and delightful. Poor MelGibson was unable to penetrate the Dame's lower atrium, however, and iscomically bereft, begging at the security camera for an audience withthe Dame (www.imdb.com/title/tt0101071/)
