John Wood

According to his marriage certificate, John Wood 's father was William Wood, Gentleman. In the 1851 census he gives his age as 30, and place of birth the city of Worcester. So far, the only possible John Wood baptism I have found is in the village of Claines, near Worcester, the son of William Wood, servant, and his wife Ann in 1819. So, was John exaggerating his father's social status? Whatever the truth is, at some stage John received a musical education sufficient enough for him to become a Music Teache (familygen.blogspot.com....-wood.html)

At some time John moved from his birthplace, Worcester, to Birmingham and in 1843 he married Jane ASH, the daughter of a butcher at St. Thomas, Bath Row. The church, as such, no longer exists as it was bombed in 1940, but the tower remains, linked to a peace garden (familygen.blogspot.com....-wood.html)

Because of the close relationship noted in the 1577 John Wood "Clothier"will between the Dedham Wood and Sherman families it can safely be concludedthat the Littlebury reference to John and Richard Wood must be the twosons of John Wood "Clothier". The 1577 will was witnessed and executedby the two Henry Sherman(s) listed also by Littlebury. Again this pointsto a family of high repute in the correct geographical area (www.rootsweb.com....Wood1.html)

2. Clark, Bertha W. (1966) "John Wood of Rhode Island, and his earlydescendants on the mainland" D. John Wood Clothier [1] Born Unknown, possibly about 152 (www.rootsweb.com....Wood2.html)

John appeared to earn his living as a musician, the occupation on his marriage certificate, but on the census in 1851, he was "Professor of Music". The family were then living at 76 Tennant St. and consisted of John, Jane, Mary Ann 6, Clara F. 4 and John H. 2. The two elder children were born in Birmingham, but the youngest has his place of birth Hurst Green, Lancashire (familygen.blogspot.com....-wood.html)

5. Alefounder Family connection." Robert Alefounder elder of Eastbergholtin ye Countie of Suffolke Clothier" [12] made his will in 1635. He was a very well respected Clothier of the Dedhamand East Bergholt areas and the Alefounder family is a well documentedone. In the 1635 will he names Ezekiel Sherman and "Brother " Thomas Wood.TheAlefounder and Sherman family records agree that Ezekiel Sherman was marriedto Rachel Alefounder, Roberts sister. Robert Alefounder was married toElizabeth "daughter of John Wood of Stratford (Also Suffolk), Clothier".Elizabeth Wood-Alefounder was the sister of the above named Thomas Wood, also a child of John Wood of Stratford. (Note that this is a confusingsecond generation John-Thomas-Elizabeth set of siblings). Both Elizabethand Thomas were therefore grandchildren of John Wood "Clothier" of Dedhamwhose 1577 will was witnessed by Henry Sherman "elder" and executed byHenry Sherman "younger", as previously cited. An important Sherman connectionhere is best explained as follows: Ezekiel Sherman and Henry "younger"had another brother Edmond (born about 1590 or nearly the same age Jo (www.rootsweb.com....Wood1.html)

i John Wood (had issue John and Mary , each less than age 17 in 1615making birth dates about 1598-1615) [2], Note: He would have been bornabout 1560-85, and could possibly have been the father of Jo (www.rootsweb.com....Wood2.html)

One other item of note in the 1615 will of John Wood of Stratford isthat he names his "Cousins Samuel and Nathaniel Ward, preacher(s) at Ipswich".Looking into the Ward genealogy we find Geoffrey Ward born 1526 in Homersfield,Suffolk Eng. Married Elizabeth Wood born 1528 in Homersfield. This Elizabethwould have been about the same age as the John Wood who died in 1577, andher grandchildren were the above named Samuel and Nathaniel Ward, makingthe above named John of Stratford a second cousin to them. This fits welland places Elizabeth as a very probably sister to John "Clothier". Makinga most likely sibling group of John, Thomas and Elizabeth all born about1520-30.I hope future research can place these 3 into another family unitalready published. A distant possibility is the theory proposed by ElizabethHoople on pages 23-30 [8] ,where she links our Wood family with the very famous Sir Andrew Wood "ofLargo" Scotland. I have not found any evidence to support this idea, butplace it here to illustrate the proposed theor (www.rootsweb.com....Wood1.html)

Within the inexact science of genealogy there are very few completeproofs and most conclusions are drawn from much less exact evidence thanis presented here. Nevertheless, there are still unknowns and areas I havedrawn conclusions on which I expect other genealogists to question, thisis the natural result of any field of research. I remain convinced thatthe following conclusions are logical, valid and accurate but remain opento review, conclusive proof provided to the contrary. II. Direct Ancestry theories on John Wood of Southwark "Mariner" and MargaretCarter. 1. According to James Sergent: Joh (www.rootsweb.com....Wood1.html)

"Bertha L. Stratton in New Light on Henry Sherman, 1954, p. 6 states:". no Sherman genealogy to date has mentioned John Wood , clothier, who8 Moh.19 Elizab. (year 19 of Queen Elizabeths reign = 1577) named "mycousin Henry Sherman the younger of Dedham" an executor of his will (provedon 2 April 1577). Among the witnesses was Henry Sherman the elder.Besidesproperty in Dedham, Wood had houses and lands in Lawford and Harwich, Essex, and Carsey, Lynseye, and Stratford, Suffolk, Starthford, Hartford. Besideshis wife, Mary, a brother Thos. survived Wood as well as the followingchildren: Richard , Geo., Frances , Mary, Henry, Jn. and Robert. The latterthree names also occur in the Henry Sherman family (www.rootsweb.com....Wood1.html)

On p.35 of "New Light.". Mrs. Stratton says: "TheShermans Henry Sherman the elder and Henry Sherman the younger with EdmondSherman his brother , Wm. Butter and Piers Butter his son, John Wood andRichard Wood were among the original Governors as named by Littleburyand their heirs to succeed them forever. The governors were incorporatedby Qu. Elizabeths Crown grant by Letters Patent of the Dedham GrammarSchool dated 1575. (Rev. T. A. Jones "History of Dedham" item sent me(Mrs. Stratton) by F. G. Emmison, County Archivist, Essex Res. Off., Chalmsford) (www.rootsweb.com....Wood1.html)

Next, note that the names Henry, George and Robert Wood appear in the1577 John Wood "Clothier" will as brothers of the Elizabeth Wood who marriedRobert Alefounder (will proved 1639). The 1577 will relates brothers Henry,George and Robert as being less than age 25 in 1577, suggesting a birthdate between 1552-76, and although a rather wide range we know that eldestson Richard and his brother John were both over 25.Thus placing the younger3 sons most likely not as babies, or more probably born about 1560-70.Thisis exactly the birth date (1560) that James Sergent and Ryan Wood use fortheir Henry Wood, as previously reported.I will later tie in a Robert Woodas brother -in-law to Capt. William Rainborow. Both Henry and Robert Woodfrom this line are the correct ages and correct social standing to be laterconnected to the Anthony Wood of Redrith (will proved 1625) and his brother -in-law,the aforementioned Capt. William Rainborow of Southwark (will proved 1642). [9 (www.rootsweb.com....Wood1.html)

3. On p.35 of "New Light.". Mrs. Stratton says: "The Shermans HenrySherman the elder and Henry Sherman the younger with Edmond Sherman hisbrother, Wm. Butter and Piers Butter his son, John Wood and Richard Wood were among the original Governors as named by Littlebury and their heirsto succeed them forever. The governors were incorporated by Queen ElizabethsCrown grant by Letters Patent of the Dedham Grammar School dated 1575.(Rev. T. A. Jones "History of Dedham" item sent me (Mrs. Stratton) byF. G. Emmison, County Archivist, Essex Res. Off., Chalmsford) (www.rootsweb.com....Wood1.html)

we have "Henry Shermanthe younger with Edmond Sherman his brother , Wm. Butter and Piers Butterhis son, John Wood and Richard Wood were among the original Governorsas named by Littlebury and their heirs to succeed them forever." This isrepeated again because subsequent research into both Butter and Coggeshalllineages yields more "Clothier" connections. The will of John Coggeshallof Essex dated 27 Dec 1600 [22] ,and the will of John Butter [23] dated 26 Jan 1624, (brother of Pierce "Piers" Butter) show the relationshipof these two families to be very close through marriage, business and geography.PierceButters daughter Anne married Joh (www.rootsweb.com....Wood2.html)

is not mentioned in the John Wood "Clothier" willof 1577, so he could have been "left out of the will" or perhaps he wasnot a direct descendent after all, but a cousin. With their Mariner interests, location in Southwark (Redrith), joint friendship with the Winthrops, emigrationto Little Compton, and similar social standings I can conclude they wereof the same family so I will then tentatively place Anthon (www.rootsweb.com....Wood2.html)

Finally, even though there were several Anthony Wood people in the earlyMassachusetts history, there were also several John Wood people of severalother Wood lines in early Massachusetts that are not known to be relatedand can not safely be connected to the Little Compton Wood line yet. TheAnthony Wood line of Essex County is possibly another line altogether andnot related to the Anthony Wood line of Little Compton. VI. Conclusions So, as Dorothy Ewers (and Bertha Clark) initially observ (www.rootsweb.com....Wood2.html)
