The cynic may notice only how Hearts in Atlantis plays like a Stephen King best-of compilation, a reheating of familiar stories and favorite themes. At times it feels so much like Stand by Me (www.westword.com....sue=217663)

Quotes: Ted :Sometimes when you're young, you have moments of such happiness , you think you're living in someplace magical, like Atlantis must have been? then we grow up and our hearts break into two. more (www.imdb.com/title/tt0252501/)

As it is, Hearts in Atlantis remains a wonderful film. It's the kind of filmwhere the scenes in the present are filmed in gloomy blue and grey tones, and all the flashbacks get a golden sepia treatment. Sure it's been donebefore, but rarely have the effects been of such a shatteringbeauty (www.imdb.com/title/tt0252501/)

Trivia: Even though the film is based on a story from the book "Hearts in Atlantis ", the story it was based on was actually called "Low Men in Yellow Coats", referring to the men that were after Ted. "Hearts in Atlantis " is the name of the story that follows "Low Men in Yellow Coats". mor (us.imdb.com/title/tt0252501/)

"Charlie Bartlett" â This offbeat teen comedy makes you feel as if you've just watched three episodes of a new TV series you can't wait to see more of â one that's so funny and smart and unpredictable, it would probably only survive one season on the air, if that, then gain a cult following on DVD. Anton Yelchin , who's had leading roles in the little-seen "Fierce People" and "House of D" and supporting parts in "Alpha Dog" and "Hearts in Atlantis ," should become better known after this, if there is any justice in the world. The fresh-faced, young actor absolutely shines as the title character, a wealthy kid who gets booted out of his elite academy, ends up in public school and becomes instantly popular when he starts doling out psychological advice in the boys' bathroom (as well as copious meds, courtesy of the family's shrink). Sure, there's some familiarity in the directing debut from longtime editor Jon Poll â shades of Ferris Bueller and Max Fischer from "Rushmore ." Still, Yelchin has an unflagging sweetness and likability about him, even as he repeatedly gets into trouble with the principal, played with mounting anger and vulnerability by Robert Downey J (entertainment.msn.com....ews=301668)

His best work (in my opinion, but this piece is entirely my opinion) is the Dark Tower series. If you read this, be sure to get the revised first book, much better than the original. Aligned with the Dark Tower series are a bunch of books that are more or less part of the same universe. The strongest association is in The Talisman and its (even better) sequal The Black House, but you also see it in many other books as well (e.g., Hearts in Atlantis , Insomnia , etc.) (www.oreillynet.com....g/2004/03/)

The Harvard Classics. 1909 14. The New Atlantis: Paras 1 29 W E SAILED from Peru, (where we had continued by the space of one whole year,) for China and Japan, by the South Sea; taking with us victuals for twelve months; and had good winds from the east, though soft and weak, for five months space, and more. But then the wind came about, and settled in the west for many days, so as we could make little or no way, and were sometimes in purpose to turn back. But then again there arose strong and great winds from the south, with a point east, which carried us up (for all that we could do), towards the north; by which time our victuals failed us, though we had made good spare of them. So that finding ourselves, in the midst of the greatest wilderness of waters in the world, without victuals, we gave ourselves for lost men and prepared for death. Yet we did lift up our hearts and voices to God above, who showeth his wonders in the deep , beseeching him of his mercy, that as in the beginning he discovered the face of the deep , and brought forth dry land, so he would now discover land to us, that we might not peris (www.bartleby.com/3/2/1.html)

"Charlie Bartlett" follows a teenage troublemaker57;s latest scheme. Anton Yelchin ("Hearts In Atlantis ") plays Charlie Bartlett, an upper-class teenager that finds himself expelled from another private school after selling Fake IDs to his fellow students. No other private school will take him, so he enrolls into a local public school where he57;s marked as an outcast from day one. Bartlett57;s luck changes when he meets Susan Gardner(Kat Dennings), the daughter of Bartlett57;s alcoholic public school principal(Robert Downey , Jr.). When Bartlett schemes his way into becoming an unlicensed psychiatrist at his new public school, he becomes incredibly popular and starts a fierce rivalry with Principal Gardner. After two weeks of dismal results, the box office roared back to life last weekend with total ticket sales of $64.1 million for the top 12 films, up 47 percent from the previous weekend and 22 percent from the same weekend a year ago. Don't Say a Word , starring Michael Douglas , surprised many analysts by opening in the top spot with $17.1 million. Many analysts had predicted that audiences would not be ready yet for such an edgy thriller. Ben Stiller 's comedy Zoolander , which had been the favorite to win the box-office race, placed second instead with $15.5 million. A third new film, Hearts in Atlantis , starring Anthony Hopkins , debuted in the third spot with $9 million. There was more bad news for Mariah Carey . Glitter , her first feature, took in less than $1 million, averaging just $772 per screen. (us.imdb.com....00164/news)

Don't Say a Word took in an estimated $18 million for an average of $6,422 per theater. Several critics on Friday had voiced skepticism that, given the current national mood, audiences would be attracted to intense thrillers, particularly one set in New York that includes a fleeting glimpse of the World Trade Center. (The film also received a number of scathing reviews.) Zoolander , analysts' clear favorite to win the weekend race, finished second with $15.7 million for a per-screen average of $6,262. Hearts in Atlantis , starring Anthony Hopkins was in third place with about 9.5 million, for a per-screen average of $5,445. The Keanu Reeves Little League film Hardball dropped to fourth place with $5.2 million, after spending two weeks in first place (us.imdb.com....00164/news)

Anthony Hopkins is getting some of his worst reviews ever for Hearts in Atlantis . The movie, says Stephen Holden in the New York Times , shows that it "really isn't hard to make a talented actor look like a blithering fool." Across town, Jami Bernard in the Daily News writes, "Is it possible to have too much Anthony Hopkins ? Believe it or not, the answer is yes." Nevertheless, Hopkins is also getting some of his best reviews for the Stephen King movie tale, with some critics even suggesting that it should win him an Oscar nomination. Rick Groen, in the Toronto Globe & Mail calls Hopkins' performance "superb" and then goes on to remark: "The best actors, like the best musicians, understand the power of silence, and Hopkins delivers an allusively quiet performance, making abundant use of the spaces between the notes. That's where he locates the suspense, forcing us to wonder what his silences contain, and whether the contents are for good or for ill. (us.imdb.com....00164/news)

Sure to be one of the best-loved films of this fall, Hearts in Atlantis adapted from Stephen King's best seller mines a lot of familiar territoryfrom Stand by Me, but that beloved film is a good model. In Stand byMe, it was a writer reflecting back on the childhood summer when wefoundthe body, here it's David Morse as a photographer remembering the summerofhis eleventh year when Ted the boarder moved upstairs. DownplayingKing'ssupernatural elements, this film slowly, but surely, builds to anemotionalpayoff every bit as moving as the end of Rob Reiner 's gem (us.imdb.com/title/tt0252501/)

Like the novel, this is more of a horror-thriller than classic Kingghost stories like The Shining . It is also less classic King horror -like Carrie . And its also not a great drama like Dolores Claiborne ,Misery and Stand By Me. Though it fits into roughly the same categoryas Hearts in Atlantis , it is not a literary as this much later Kingwork and the characters are not as well developed. Although the bookcould be said to be one of King&s earlier experiments with what wouldbecome a formula for his lesser works, King&s writing is so lucid, andhis characters are so interesting, believable and nicely examined, thathis &B fiction& is still somewhat above the average best-seller. Thefilm follows the book very closely, and, like the book, is sort of aprototype for the more formulaic films in the King portfoli (www.imdb.com/title/tt0087262/)

ARCs of Stephen King's "Hearts in Atlantis ," due out in September , have sold for up to $90. Galleys of "The Satanic Verses" are a steal at $100, when you can find them. (And of course eBay sells hardcovers, too; "richmark" is currently peddling a first edition of Gore Vidal's "Burr" - as of this writing it's at $21.50 - with a personal inscription from the author: "To Cousin Henry, with love from Gore." No one can play that funny-sad Bill Murray character as brilliantly as Murray routinely does. But Hopkins has astonishing range ." From the time that Sir AnTONY Hopkins was in Silence of the Lambs until this column in 2004 he was in some of the great movies of all time: Alexander, Hearts in Atlantis , MI: 2, Freejack , The Mask of Zorro , and my favorite. How the Grinch Stole Christmas. Bill Murray in that same time frame was in: What about Bob ?, Groundhog Day , Ed Wood , Kingpin , Wild Things , Rushmore , Charlie's Angels, and The Royal Tenenbaums .that my friends is "range". A pilgrimage that began with one lone man's quest to save multiple worlds from chaos and destruction unfolds into a tale of epic proportions. While King saw some criticism for the slow pace of 1982's The Gunslinger , the book that launched this series, The Drawing of the Three (Book II, 1987), reeled in readers with its fantastical allure. And those who have faithfully journeyed alongside Roland, Eddie, Susannah, Jake and Oy ever since will find their loyalty toward the series' creator richly rewarded. The tangled web of the tower's multiple worlds has manifested itself in many of King's other works— The Stand (1978), Insomnia (1994) and Hearts in Atlantis (1999), to name a few. As one character explains here, "From the spring of 1970, when he typed the line The man in black fled across the desert, and the gunslinger followed . very few of the things Stephen King wrote were 'just stories.' He may not believe that; we do." King, in fact, intertwines his own life story deeper and deeper into the tale of Roland and his surrogate family of gunslingers, and, in this final installment, playfully and seductively suggests that it might not be the author who drives the story, but rather the fictional characters that control the auth (www.amazon.com....doutint-20)

In the lot stands a rose, or rather the Rose , which is our world's manifestation of the Dark Tower. With the help of the Old Fella (also known to `Salem's Lot readers as Father Callahan), the gunslingers must devise a plan against evil in both worlds. The task, however, is further complicated as Roland and his gang start noticing behavioral changes in wheelchair-bound, recovered schizophrenic Susannah. As the players near the Tower, readers will keep finding exciting ties between the Dark Tower universe and King's other books, with links to Black House, Insomnia , The Eyes of the Dragon, The Stand , `Salem's Lot and Hearts in Atlantis . The high suspense and extensive character development here (especially concerning Jake's coming-of-age), plus the enormity of King's ever-expanding universe, will surely keep his "Constant Readers" in awe (www.amazon.com....doutint-20)

Stephen King has said that of all the books he has written, the Dark Tower is the most important and deeply meaningful work he has produced. Reading each successive volume, I can see that this is increasingly true. The series seems to be the summing up of his writing career by incorporating many of the characters, story lines, philosophies, mythologies, and literary inspirations of his previous works into this single far-reaching fantasy universe. This fifth installment more strongly than ever incorporates such references, including Salem's Lot, The Stand , Hearts in Atlantis , and many others. He also includes references to a myriad of books by other authors besides the obvious Tolkien. I found allusions to the works of L. Frank Baum, J.K. Rowling, Richard Adams , and even Marvel Comics (www.amazon.com....doutint-20)

He is often associated with the horror genre, but the reality is that he has written many books outside that particular arena, such as Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption , the Green Mile and Hearts in Atlantis (all three have since been made into movies). The Dark Tower series is another example of his better known non-horror (online-family-trees.suite101.com....ephen_king)

I don't know if I really buy into a Talisman -esque reading of Lost - but for you two, who seem to enjoy that type of stuff, The whole mythology created by King through the Talisman and Black House (with Peter Straub in each) and his Dark Tower series (and other books - Hearts of Atlantis being one of many) provides interesting comparisons to Lost in that he weaves storylines together in a similar way that the Losties stories have that neat way of brushing, sometimes biting, into one another. The critics be damned, but King's works along those lines also has the synergistic element that has hit me in some episodes of Lost, that only by paying attention to the nuances of each story and thinking about them does the full power of the reveal hit you. To be able to do that to a watcher or reader, wow, now that's something . . . I look forward to the punch in Lost (blog.washingtonpost.com....atest.html)

The theme for February's challenge was "Heart". Working off of my own display I created in the library, I surveyed the offering of books with the word "heart" in the title and narrowed in on my options. Would I choose, "Hearts in Atlantis " by Stephen King? No.too long, especially after last month's selection (see Feb 8th post Pillars of the Earth). Would I choose, "The Heart is a Lonely Hunter" by Carson McCullers? No. . . too literary and the ability of my brain to appreciate great literature has significantly decreased in the years ensuing the obtainment of my B.A. in English Literature. I'm afraid to even try to read a "classic work of lit-er-a-ture" for fear of embarrasing myself by truly acknowledging just how little I've retained in the 15 years since graduation. No. . . a self-acknowledged realist I made the wisest choice available to me - a "skinny" book and no, not just any skinny book - a skinny book of short stories JACKPOT (www.vclblog1.blogspot.com/)

Here's the rub: Charlie prescribes, for a hefty fee, medication he's conned from his mom (Hope Davis , cast as Yelchin's mother for the second time after Hearts in Atlantis this is, incidentally, her worst performance yet) and her posse of mental health professionals-presaged by a scene at a school dance/rave in which he fences a bottle of Ritalin to his classmates, leading to a moment where a couple of girls, playing high-school girls, run by topless as they're chased by a comic-relief-retard (Dylan Taylor) who provides the film its sentimental rimshot. What's funnier than a retard who likes bad musicals, am I right? Since porn itself isn't allowed, legally, to imply that its performers are underage, I got the heebie-jeebies watching actresses I hope are over eighteen portray high-schoolers, topless and high, about to be raped by a Faulknerian man-child in a cape. Offended? I was, too (filmfreakcentral.net....rtlett.htm)

Kris and I were talking on Friday night about how we're made to feel really guilty about being Stephen King fans. It's a sad truth that successful authors are, by popular opinion, always considered lesser authors than the greats. While I'm not absolving King of some faults as a writer (his endings, for example, are often far too quick and convienient, and some of his major themes are recycled more often than beer bottles) I think that he's one of our generation's best storytellers. He builds characters that are so rich, so fully dimensioned, that you can imagine them as real people. Protagonists have flaws, but you end up loving them more for their flaws just as you would your real friends. Not all of his books are great in fact, I've found his novellas consistantly better, but if you haven't yet I'd really recommend reading Bag of Bones , Hearts in Atlantis and The Long Walk (originally published as Richard Bachman) which are easily three of his best work (www.beltzner.ca....s/2002/08/)

Anyway, when Hearts in Atlantis was released in 2001, I wasn57;t in a rush to see it, but knew that I57;d get around to it someday because Anthony Hopkins is in it. Well, that day didn57;t come until yesterday , but I finally did see the film 52; without having read the short story that it57;s based on, so my review will reflect that perspectiv (www.reviewsandm....007/02/26/)

Like many Stephen King stories, Hearts in Atlantis is about childhood and nostalgia. Bobby Garfield (played by David Morse ) receives and old baseball mitt in the mail one day, and that item sets off memories of his childhood, beginning with his 11th birthday. From there, the movie flashes back to the 196057;s and we see Bobby (now played by Anton Yelchin ) as an 11-year-old in a small tow (www.reviewsandm....007/02/26/)
