Redesigned for 1997, bigger in size and racier in appearance, Grand Prix shared its front-drive, midsize platform with Buick's Century. It was also related to the latest Buick Regal and Oldsmobile Intrigue, both of which would debut for 1998. Coupes and sedans had the same styling, except for rear doors and quarter panels. A wider stance was touted as a revival of Pontiac's "Wide Track" look of the 1960s. In fact, track width (distance between wheels on the same axle) grew by more 2 inches in front and 3 inches in the rear, compared to '96 models. Grand Prix came as a base SE sedan or a sportier GT coupe and sedan, as well as with a high-performance GTP package-available for GT models in either body style. Neither Buick nor Oldsmobile offered coupe versions of their midsize models. All Grand Prix models used V6 engines and a 4-speed automatic transmission. A 3.1-liter V6 went into the SE, but those models were delayed for a few months after the car 's introduction in summer 1996. A 3.8-liter V6, available right off the bat, was optional in the SE and standard in GT mode (consumerguideauto.howstuffworks.com....d-prix.htm)

All models are composed and balanced for their size. The steering feels firm and responsive, but Grand Prix 's wide turning circle hampers close-quarters maneuvering. Brakes on test cars provided adequate control, despite numb and mushy pedal feel (consumerguideauto.howstuffworks.com....prix-5.htm)
Pontiac's reworked midsize was a big hit from the start. Sales of the '97 model ran more than 50 percent of 1996 levels, though naturally its popularity tapered off later. Brashly styled with a confident stance, Grand Prix is a highly capable, sporty midsize car that challenges the class leaders in overall value. (consumerguideauto.howstuffworks.com....prix-6.htm)

While model designations for Grand Prix may have changed, the powertrain options did not. Base models had a 200-hp, 3.8-liter V6. A 260-hp supercharged 3.8-liter V6 was standard on GTs. The top-line GXP had a 303-hp 5.3-liter V8. All Grand Prix s used a 4-speed automatic transmission (consumerguideauto.howstuffworks.com....prix-6.htm)
The Grand Prix is the best kept secret in Daytona! I have been there the last two years and think it is the best deal going. The pool is clean, the rooms are clean and you can get a kitchen in a separate room that makes this stay a tremendous bargain. What's really cool, is that the Valencia race will happen through the streets of the city, around the port area, like the Monaco Grand Prix . I'm already looking forward to it. (formula1.about.com....lencia.htm)
Our moles say Grand Prix goes away after 2008, but can't say for sure what comes next. General Motors is likely mulling two choices. One is a new front-drive midsize car using the global Epsilon II architecture slated for the next-generation G6. The other is a rear-wheel-drive Pontiac sedan, possibly with V8 power, on the company's new Zeta platform. The Zeta seems to have the better chance at the moment, as some GM execs want future Pontiacs to be nothing but rear-drive cars. We may get a clearer picture at the January 2007 North American International Auto Show, where Pontiac will reportedly have a concept said to preview the Grand Prix 's replacement, which could be dubbed G8 (consumerguideauto.howstuffworks.com....d-prix.htm)
2000 Pontiac Grand Prix : Wheels were revised and the nose restyled on Pontiac's midsize coupe and sedan. The standard 3.1-liter V6, installed in SE models, gained 15 horsepower (now 175). New standard equipment included rear child-seat anchors and an antitheft system that disabled the starter unless the proper ignition key was used. Pontiac also launched a Daytona 500 pace-car replica, with silver paint, unique 16-inch aluminum wheels , functional hood vents, a decklid spoiler, bright exhaust tips, and Daytona decals. Only 2000 were planned. By now, the list of Grand Prix competitors included the Toyota Solara coupe and Chevrolet Impala sedan (consumerguideauto.howstuffworks.com....d-prix.htm)

The 2008 Pontiac Grand Prix slims down its model offerings this year. This is the larger of Pontiac's two midsize sedans. Grand Prix seats five and comes in base and high-performance GXP trims. The mid-level GT model is discontinued. Base models have a 200-hp 3.8-liter V6 engine, and GXPs use a 303-hp 5.3-liter V8. Both engines team with a 4-speed automatic transmission. The V8 has GM's Active Fuel Management cylinder deactivation system. Available safety features include ABS, traction control, antiskid system, and curtain side airbags. The 2008 Pontiac Grand Prix is available with a navigation system and leather upholstery (consumerguideauto.howstuffworks.com....d-prix.htm)

With Spain's Fernando Alonso the reigning Formula One World Champion, the Spanish are crazy about F1 especially around the time of the Spanish Grand Prix in Barcelona (next one will be May 2007). Three engines were available under Grand Prix hoods. A 3.1-liter V6, rated 160 horsepower, went in the base SE sedan. Optional in the SE and standard on Grand Prix GT coupes and sedans was a 195-horsepower, 3.8-liter V6, which later grew to 200 horsepower. Topping the performance chart was a supercharged variant of the 3.8-liter, whipping up 240 horses. All Grand Prix models had a 4-speed automatic transmission. For 2000, the base engine gained 15 horsepower. (consumerguideauto.howstuffworks.com....prix-6.htm)
V6 models provide ample power for everyday use. The supercharged version is muscular, as is the V8. GXP's TAPshift enhances performance more than similar systems, but the paddles are hard to reach with thumbs. Supercharged Grand Prix s GTs averaged 17.1-19.0 mpg in our tests. A GXP averaged 15.3. Pontiac recommends premium-grade fuel for these models, and 200-hp versions use regular. All Grand Prix s ride well. GT and GXP are the sportiest but never feel harsh. Base models are softer, with testers noting some float at highway speeds. Credit responsive steering and a wide front track for Grand Prix 's composed, balanced handling. That wide track, though, contributes to a large turning radius, which hurts low-speed maneuverability. The brakes provide good stopping power despite numb pedal action. These sedans do a good job of quelling wind noise. The GXP's low-profile 18-inch tires slap on sharp pavement joints, but it compensates by offering a throaty but refined engine note. Grand Prix 's interior pleases for its easy-to-use controls and ample front-seat leg room (consumerguideauto.howstuffworks.com....prix-6.htm)
However, GM wished not to expend more capital than necessary to bring the GP up to snuff, so the company cribbed a play from the Toyota rulebook: the basic platform and powertrains of the old model were kept, structural reinforcements were added, a new skin was penned and a redesigned interior was installed. The changes are substantial enough to call the 2004 Pontiac Grand Prix new, but this is not a complete redesign. For 2004, the Grand Prix coupe has been shelved in favor of a sedan-only lineup (articles.directorym.com....52678.html)
Freshened styling and more available power marked the 2004 revamp of Pontiac's midsize car. Grand Prix continued as a five-passenger 4-dr sedan with front-wheel drive and V6 power. Wheelbase was unchanged, but the new body was slightly longer. Rear leg room increased about a half inch, rear head room shrunk about the same. The lineup consisted of base GT1, better-equipped GT2, and top-line GTP models, the last highlighted by a new Competition Group performance option. GTs continued with a 200-hp V6. GTPs got a supercharged version with 260 hp, up 20 hp from last year. A 4-speed automatic remained the sole transmission, though the GTP's Comp G package featured Pontiac's new TAPshift that allows manual-shift control via paddles on the steering wheel. It also included a performance-tuned suspension and antiskid system. All models had 4-wheel disc brakes. ABS and traction control were optional on GT1, standard on other models. Interior revisions included new materials and a new dashboard. Curtain side airbags were optional on GT2 and GTP, unavailable on GT (consumerguideauto.howstuffworks.com....d-prix.htm)

Only one week left before the next race, the Spanish Grand Prix outside Barcelona . After the teams finished testing there this week many drivers concluded that the changes made to the track should encourage more overtaking. A chicane has been placed between the last two corners and this should allow cars to get closer to the car in front of them to hopefully overtake on the main straight (formula1.about.com....d-prix.htm)
It's not as if we have not had enough passing this year! On the other hand, if you happen to attend the race but are not seated near the main straight, keep in mind that this year you can rent Kangaroo TV's hand held device to watch the race while you're in the grand stands (formula1.about.com....d-prix.htm)
I've never been one to ask for a lot of overtaking anyway. I like the analogy that Max Mosley, the FIA president, used to employ about how F1's overtaking was like soccer with its goals, compared to, say, Nascar or IndyCar, where the endless overtaking was like the massive number of "goals" scored in basketball. (I'm not sure why Max has changed his tune on that one, and says we now must have more passing although I think it has to do with the FIA F1 fan surveys .) Moreover, I thought the Australian Grand Prix was very good this year, even with half as much passing as last year, even if the top three finishers' results did mainly come down to race strategy . (Let's not forget Lewis Hamilton's amazing passing at the start. (formula1.about.com....d-prix.htm)
That may sound a bit bizarre, but I suppose Ecclestone is taking advantage of the presence this weekend of the gathering of the world's media at the Spanish Grand Prix in Barcelona . In any case, the subject was much talked about in the paddock today, and particuarly since there were two Spaniards taking part in the Thursday press conference Fernando Alonso and the McLaren Mercedes test driver , Pedro de la Ros (formula1.about.com....es-way.htm)
Took the VTA bus #23 which dropped us right at the entrance gate for the Grand Prix . I bought thegeneral admission ticket for me and my wife and kids under 12 were free. It wasexciting to see the cars zippping along downtown routes at triple the maximumspeed and not getting a ticket :) We saw practice and qualifying runs from noon to about 4:30pm after which the rubber burning smell and deafeningsound (estimated at 117 decibels) was getting too much for my son (blogs.sun.com...._prix_2005)
There were big TV screens through out the course but the crowd was much morethan expected and thus got slightly unmanageable. My two big complaints (and themost common ones) are long waits in the queue to cross the bridge and relativelysimple track so there was no excitement to see the racing cars pass each other. But since this was our first grand prix , really enjoyed it. We filled up thefeedback survey and, if lucky, may get gold grandstand pass for the 2006returning event (blogs.sun.com...._prix_2005)
Things are revving up for the biggest beach party of the year at the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach . Friday has the advantage of being less crowded, you can sit in good seats cheap and there are the most drivers on the course celebrities and pros. You can also meet the Champ Car drivers during the scheduled autograph session at 4:15 pm. The day ends with a live concert by "Los Enanitos Verdes". (golosangeles.about.com....d-prix.htm)
Saturday after a few hours of warm ups and qualifying races for Sunday, there's the Celebrity Pro Race at 11:45 am, where this year five of eleven celebs are women. In the afternoon there is more champ car qualifying, the drifting challenge and the American Le Mans Series race. The day ends with more live music from the band "Taking Back Sunday", followed by the Miss Toyota Grand Prix Pageant (golosangeles.about.com....d-prix.htm)
1999 Pontiac Grand Prix : Detail changes marked the '99 editions of Pontiac's midsize coupe and sedan. The nonsupercharged V6 engine gained five horsepower. GT models got a standard rear spoiler this year. Available 16-inch alloy wheels came in a new 5-spoke design. New options included a Bose 8-speaker audio system and a heated driver 's seat (consumerguideauto.howstuffworks.com....d-prix.htm)
