The image of actor Dennis Hopper as a wild and intense bad boy has softened in recent years, but he's still famous for his many roles in independent movies and for his work in a handful of cinema classics. He started in the movies in the early 1950s, appearing in Johnny Guitar (1953), Rebel Without A Cause (1955) and Giant (1956). In the '60s his reputation as a "difficult" actor who favored improvisation kept him from getting many mainstream roles, and he appeared in several low-budget movies, including the "hippie" cult favorites The Trip (1967) and Head (1968). He directed and starred in 1969's Easy Rider with Peter Fonda and Jack Nicholson , a box office success that steered Hollywood toward counter-culture marketing. Of course, cool things happen when you put Dennis Hopper in charge of a film festival. Still, usually Las Vegas is all about climbing on bandwagons. This is a town that never is the first to do anything. But today I am taking a little civic pride in our film festival, CineVegas, for getting a jump on the Academy in being all about Helen Mirren . Last June I was in the audience covering at the Palms as CineVegas honored Mirren for her lifetime achievements with the festival's Marquee Award. After the screening of a film in which she played Ayn Rand, a Q A was held between Mirren and a New York Times' film critic. Mirren discussed playing Queen Elizabeth (a couple Queens Elizabeth , actually) in great detail. She also talked interestingly about being a not young woman in a youth obsessed business. Today CineVegas has that Q A (with the always cool Dennis Hopper presiding in the background) up for all to see on its myspace (vegasblog.latim....s/2007/02/)
Trivia: The finished film was primarily centered around Dennis Hopper 's character, but due to Wesley Snipes 's popularity at the time, Warner Bros. who bought the film in the US, decided to shorten most of his scenes, to strengthen Snipes's role. Other cuts were made to beef up the pacing. The cuts included the loss of several scenes between Mortensen and his girlfriend. In an interview director James B. Harris stated that he did not have final cut and that Warner Bros. removed ten minutes from the pic in attempt to make it more commercial. He noted that they also changed the title from Money Men, to Boiling Point , in a bid to sell it as an action picture, similar to Passenger 57.
