Located just a short drive northwest of Del Rio, Lake Amistad is a sprawling reservoir shared by the United States and Mexico . Since it is located in a mountainous region, Amistad 's waters are clear and deep, making it a popular destination for swimmers, boaters, scuba divers, windsurfers, and fishermen (gotexas.about.com....allery.htm)

Cinque spoke neither English nor Spanish and could not testify at the court of inquiry, but his presence dominated the proceeding. In the few short days between being taken into custody by the navy and appearing before the district court, Cinque emerged in press accounts as the near-mythical leader of the revolt on the Amistad . The fate of the African captives now depended on one judge's decision in an admiralty proceeding. Lewis Tappan understood that if the Africans of the Amistad were to be something other than the objects of competing property claims, they must enter the case as an independent party and testify in the district court (www.archives.gov....tad-1.html)

Through August 8th, Nova Scotia will enjoy a piece of history in the form of a "floating museum." Amistad , a recreation of the infamous 1839 schooner La Amistad , was sailed from Connecticut to Nova Scotia by a diverse group of Canadian students who volunteered and were selected for the experience. "This is an amazing opportunity for our young people," said Wayn Hamilton, CEO of the Office of African Nova Scotian Affairs. "The schooner is a floating history lesson. It keeps the legacy of the Amistad incident alive, which at its heart is a story about diverse groups working together through adversity to accomplish a common goal. The program was designed to create and encourage dialogue on issues of human rights and diversity by using the Amistad 's history as a teaching point for lessons on freedom, justice perseverance, cooperation, and leadership. (racerelations.about.com....mistad.htm)

Illegally purchased by Spaniards, they were then transferred to the now infamous schooner, La Amistad . After 63 days, La Amistad and her African cargo were seized by the United States Naval Cutter USS Washington near Montauk Point, Long Island, New York . The ship was then towed to Connecticut s New London harbor. (racerelations.about.com....mistad.htm)

I also stayed one time in one of the apartments that the Amistad manages. It was equally clean, it was huge by anyones standards and it was convenient. However, I prefer the hotel itself for the breakfast and internet connection (www.tripadvisor.com....lland.html)

During a 10 day stay in Amsterdam , I had the pleasure of staying at the Amistad Hotel on Kerkstraat. I have to say that they scored 100% on the 3 "C"s: Clean, Comfortable and Convenient. After getting to know the city a little, I came to realize that the Amistad was truly in the middle of everything a visitor would. mor (www.tripadvisor.com....lland.html)

An additional point to note. Usually web sites are better than the real thing. Casa de Amistad is the opposite. It is better in real life than on the web! (www.tripadvisor.com...._Rico.html)

Casa de Amistad is the perfect guesthouse. The staff is exceptionally kind and accommodating. The rooms are spotlessly clean and nicely appointed. The layout is wonderful with porches, a courtyard with a small pool, a dining area, a sun deck, and a common kitchen available to guests.I was actually impressed how the kitchen and dining areas allowed guests to. mor (www.tripadvisor.com...._Rico.html)

We stayed at Casa de Amistad for our 2nd time in 2 years, we adore this place, the owners and staff immensely. It's hard to put your finger on exactly what it is about Casa de Amistad that makes you love it so much. (www.tripadvisor.com...._Rico.html)

The Amistad case almost immediately became the subject of a national debate on slavery and the law. In New York , a group of abolitionists led by Lewis Tappan recognized that the arrest of the Africans presented them with the case they had been seeking in order to challenge the laws of slavery in federal court. Tappan, from a wealthy merchant family, had been an organizing member of the American Anti-Slavery Society in 1833. He joined with Joshua Leavitt and Simeon Jocelyn to form a committee that would raise money for the legal representation of the Amistad captives and for their education while in custody. Roger Sherman Baldwin, scion of a prominent Connecticut political family, would lead the legal team with the assistance of Seth Staples and Theodore Sedgwick. In reputation, if not in numbers, they appeared to the U.S. attorney as an army of counsel. 7 (www.archives.gov....tad-1.html)

In over 25 years of one week stays in small gay hotels in Amsterdam , the Amistad Hotel is the one I will return to as often as I can. My last stay was my fourth in three years. Owners and staff have always been courteous and helpful be it taking my bags up 46 steps or advising where to go in the city. Rooms are very clean and equipped the way I like and ensuite bathrooms are large and nicely equipped. There is a LAN outlet in every room and if you forget the cable for your computer, they loan you one. They have a great European style breakfast running to 13:00 (1 PM) for the occasional late riser. Location can not be better for walking everywhere or taking the tram. The value in Euros is good - it is the Dollar that is down the tubes. Do I like the Amistad ? Yes indeed (www.tripadvisor.com....lland.html)

There the court heard the testimony of two Spanish planters from Cuba. The planters referred to the young African man as Cinque and told the court how he had led a revolt of other enslaved Africans on board the schooner Amistad . Cinque was among a group of fifty-three enslaved individuals whom the planters, Jose Ruiz and Pedro Montes, purchased in Havana and then transported on the Amistad in the direction of plantations along the Cuban coast (www.archives.gov....tad-1.html)

The collection of suits and property claims that forced the federal courts to consider the legal foundations of slavery had come about because of the actions of enslaved individuals, and those individuals appeared in court, represented by lawyers demanding protection of their legal rights. The self-determining actions of the Amistad captives set the case apart from earlier federal cases involving slavery and captured the attention of a nation increasingly divided by debates on slavery and by the sectionalism that would eventually lead to the Civil War. The growth of the antislavery movement in the 1830s and slaveholders' heightened fear of slave revolts gave the court case added import in both the North and the South (www.archives.gov....tad-1.html)

For many of the Americans who followed the case in the press, the Amistad proceedings were an introduction to the organization and workings of the federal judiciary. The related cases moved through each of the three types of courts in the early federal system and presented issues related to the range of jurisdiction exercised by the federal courts. The progress of Amistad through the federal courts also revealed the paradoxes of a legal culture that simultaneously recognized enslaved persons as chattel and as accountable individuals (www.archives.gov....tad-1.html)

After Ruiz and Montes testified at the initial court session on board the Washington, Judge Judson transferred the court to the Amistad itself.Antonio, a slave who had served as cabin boy to the slain captain of the schooner, described what he witnessed on the night of the revolt, and he identified the individuals who had led the uprising along with Cinque. Gedney and his crew presented the court with their libel for salvage, with a detailed list of a large valuable Cargo. The invoice described such goods as 11 Boxes Crockery Glassware, 200 Boxes vermacelli, and 800 yds Striped linen worth, along with the schooner and its fittings, an estimated $40,000. Appended to the list of dry goods was the description of fifty four Slaves to wit fifty one male slaves and three young female slaves who were worth twenty five Thousand Dollars. 4 (www.archives.gov....tad-1.html)
