We plan to go to Amsterdam in August '08 and hope to go to the cheese market in Alkmaar . Does rain cancel the market, or does the market go on rain or shine? Also, is there a way to get from Alkmaar to Volendam by public transportation without going back to Amsterdam ? The only public transportation I could find to Volendam was a bus from Amsterdam (#110, I believe ). Thanks (www.tripadvisor.com....lland.html)

Thank you for your very helpful response. My interest in Volendam is that I read that many people there wear the traditional costumes in the Summer for tourists. We will have 4 1/2 days in Amsterdam , and will probably spend two of those outside the area, possibly a Kroller-Muller museum/Het Loo day, and a Delft/Hague day (but I'm open to better suggestions). Is Volendam worth the time, or should we spend more time in Amsterdam ? Maybe there will be enough people in Alkmaar wearing the traditional dress? Alkmaar is situated in the northern part of Holland near the coast of the North Sea. In 1254 it was given municipal rights by count William II of Holland, and soon became prosperous as a centre of trading. In 1573, during the Dutch revolt, the city succesfully withstood a siege by a Spanish Army. The slogan Alcmaria Victrix , well-known in the Netherlands , dates from those days. Nowadays the town has nearly 93.000 inhabitants. For tourists it still organizes the famous cheese-market, a relic from the past when Alkmaar was a very important agrarian market-town.
