Considering what we know about the dangers of smoking, this makes perfect sense. Smoking remains the No. 1 preventable cause of death in the U.S., killing roughly 1,200 Americans every day. Each year tobacco use is responsible for almost $90 billion in U.S. health care expenditures. Every day, 4,000 children start smoking and 1,500 become daily smokers. Meanwhile, studies show that for every 10 percent increase in the price of cigarettes, youth smoking is reduced by 7 percent, and overall consumption by 4 percent. Each image portrays a specific quantity of something: fifteen million sheets of office paper (five minutes of paper use); 106,000 aluminum cans (thirty seconds of can consumption) and so on. My hope is that images representing these quantities might have a different effect than the raw numbers alone, such as we find daily in articles and books. Statistics can feel abstract and anesthetizing, making it difficult to connect with and make meaning of 3.6 million SUV sales in one year, for example, or 2.3 million Americans in prison, or 426,000 cell phones retired every day. This project visually examines these vast and bizarre measures of our society, in large intricately detailed prints assembled from thousands of smaller photographs. It was pretty easy staying smober for the next few days, until I started feeling better and the mental struggle began overwhelming me again. I would look at the almost full pack of Marlboro s sitting on the mantle untouched since 9:00 am August 25th, and the 9 packs left in the carton in the cupboard in the garage where I did most of my smoking while I worked. I could have ONE to get me through this tough spot, there s a big enough supply that no one will notice. Wait a minute, is there an echo in here? Haven t I heard this song before? You bet I have and I know it well. What about the next tough spot.and the next.and the next? How many last cigarettes do you have left.190 some? What then, go buy another 20? I drink way to much cola. Many drink way too much coffee while other smoke too many cigarettes (any is too many). Many of these are gambling with your health. Oh and cut back on your gambling too.
