So goes the social engineering in a little piece of 1950s filmmaking called "Are You Popular?"-one of some 48,000 films collected by Rick Prelinger over the past 30 years or so. About 1,200 of those films are available for free download or streaming from the Internet Archive , a number Prelinger expects to rise to over 2,000 by the end of the year. Besides "mental hygiene" films like "Are You Popular?", the online collection includes racist war propaganda, square-dancing cigarettes in a Lucky Strike commercial, the story of food processing, a TV show called "Science in Action," and the story of the extraction of Saudi oil to power the American "nation on wheels ." The results, In the Zone, reflected a wish to be taken seriously as a mature (though still highly sexualized) adult. Predictably, it topped the charts and launched several singles into orbit, including the musically adventurous "Toxic," "Everytime," and "Me Against the Music." In the Zone hit number one on the Billboard 200, and "Toxic" snagged a Grammy for Best Dance Recording. But by 2004 there were no longer any illusions of Britney's personal life being all wholesome candy canes and kisses. First there was the star's bizarre two-day marriage to childhood friend Jason Alexander , followed by the controversial, highly sexualized Onyx Hotel tour, which was eventually canceled (allegedly because of a knee injury) despite positive financial numbers. Starbucks and cigarettes were Britney's constant accessories in the endless paparazzi photos, and the revelation of her relationship with former backup dancer Kevin Federline made the tabloids even more ravenous . Spears and Federline married in September and were tabloid regulars in the months after the ceremony (www.mp3.com....s/summary/)

Like most people, we Americans adore what caffeine doesâit gives us thatjolt from a Coke, that mild kick from a Hersheyâs bar, that boost from a coffeebreak. No wonder the average American adult consumes 200 milligrams of caffeinedaily, almost 75 percent of it from coffee, and the rest from tea (15 percent),soft drinks (10 percent) and chocolate (2 percent), according to the Center forScience in the Public Interest, a nonprofit group in Washington, D.C. Evenpregnant women who deny themselves champagne or cigarettes hesitate to give uptheir beloved morning cup of coffee. But however socially acceptable andseemingly safe, caffeine is a mildly addictive drug. (www.webmd.com..../java-news)

Considering what we know about the dangers of smoking, this makes perfect sense. Smoking remains the No. 1 preventable cause of death in the U.S., killing roughly 1,200 Americans every day. Each year tobacco use is responsible for almost $90 billion in U.S. health care expenditures. Every day, 4,000 children start smoking and 1,500 become daily smokers. Meanwhile, studies show that for every 10 percent increase in the price of cigarettes, youth smoking is reduced by 7 percent, and overall consumption by 4 percent. A tobacco tax increase would act as a deterrent to both young and potential smokers. (www.ama-assn.org....17816.html)

Chris Jordan's incredible gallery of consumption culture (this skeleton is made from 200,000 packs of cigarettes) artist's statment This new series looks at contemporary American culture through the austere lens of statistics. Each image portrays a specific quantity of something: fifteen million sheets of office paper (five minutes of paper use); 106,000 aluminum cans (thirty seconds of can consumption) and so on. My hope is that images representing these quantities might have a different effect than the raw numbers alone, such as we find daily in articles and books. Statistics can feel abstract and anesthetizing, making it difficult to connect with and make meaning of 3.6 million SUV sales in one year, for example, or 2.3 million Americans in prison, or 426,000 cell phones retired every day. This project visually examines these vast and bizarre measures of our society, in large intricately detailed prints assembled from thousands of smaller photographs. My underlying desire is to emphasize the role of the individual in a society that is increasingly enormous, incomprehensible, and overwhelming (blog.makezine.com....e_jamming/)

It was pretty easy staying smober for the next few days, until I started feeling better and the mental struggle began overwhelming me again. I would look at the almost full pack of Marlboro s sitting on the mantle untouched since 9:00 am August 25th, and the 9 packs left in the carton in the cupboard in the garage where I did most of my smoking while I worked. I could have ONE to get me through this tough spot, there s a big enough supply that no one will notice. Wait a minute, is there an echo in here? Haven t I heard this song before? You bet I have and I know it well. What about the next tough spot.and the next.and the next? How many last cigarettes do you have left.190 some? What then, go buy another 20? Or another 200 to keep the cost down? (quitsmoking.about.com....tstory.htm)

I drink way to much cola. Many drink way too much coffee while other smoke too many cigarettes (any is too many). Many of these are gambling with your health. Oh and cut back on your gambling too. I recently did a calculation for my dear old dad, and if I summed up his expenses and winnings on soccer be
